Sonic the Hedgehog could use a big hug right about now, and so could everyone else at Sega. After holding a meeting with the company's Board of Directors, Sega this weekend decided it was time to restructure its operations in order to cope with a "challenging economic climate" and adapt to "significant changes in the home videogame software market environment in the U.S. and Europe." If you're a fan of Sonic, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Sega's most popular franchise is safe. Sega said it will also continue to focus on Football Manager, Total War, and Aliens, all of which "are expected to continue posting solid earnings." At the same time, Sega said it's cancelling the development... Read more...
For those of you who haven't experienced the awesome addiction of Temple Run, it's clear you don't own an Apple device. You've been missing out on one of those rare games that's utterly simple to play but constantly has you promising yourself, "Okay, I'll give it just one more shot," which quickly turns into a dozen more tries and another half hour gone from your day. Well, Android fans, now's your chance to see what all the fuss is about. Imangi Studios today announced that Temple Run is now available on select Android devices. It's a free download via Google Play (still feels funny not to say Android Market), and though there are in-app purchases, if you play enough times -- and you will --... Read more...
Those Angry Birds everyone likes to fling at thieving pigs and shoddy structures have only been in space for three days, and in that time have already amassed more than 10 million downloads, Rovio announced on Twitter this morning. Angry Birds Space is latest title in the popular franchise, and it's gotten off to a far faster start than Angry Birds Rio, which took 10 days to log the same number of downloads. "10 million Angry Birds Space downloads in less than 3 days! Thanks to our fans, stay tuned form ore! #angrybirdsspace," Rovio posted to Twitter earlier today. Angry Birds Space was released simultaneously on iOS, Android, PC (Windows), and Mac. Unfortunately for Windows Phone users, it looks... Read more...
In order to charge $250 for a keyboard, it has to be something pretty special. Razer thinks its new Star Wars: The Old Republic themed gaming keyboard qualifies, which is just one of several themed items now up for preorder. The other items include a mouse, headset, and mouse mat, all molded and decked out in an Old Republic theme. So how else do you justify a $250 plank? This particular one comes with a multi-touch LCD track panel built into the right-hand side with interchangeable digital faction symbols. It's a full color display, and above it sit ten dynamic adaptive tactile keys. There are over 100 fully programmable "Hyperesponse" keys, gold-backlit illumination throughout, multi-color... We're big fans of full contact Football and, up through the 1980s, Basketball could be considered a contact sport until the NBA decided that that league's multimillion dollar Basketball  stars shouldn't be so much as sneezed on when driving to the basket (seriously, is the NBA really more entertaining without these kind of hard fouls?). But full contact Bingo? That's a new one to us, though not to Electronic Arts, which apparently decided to file trademark applications for the term earlier this month. EA submitted two separate applications for Full Contact Bingo (serial numbers 85560267 and 85560275), one that applies to "Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game;... If you grew up playing on an Atari 2600 or ColecoVision, your parents may have shrugged off your obsession with videogames as nothing more than a fad. They couldn't have been more wrong. Videogames are more popular than ever, as evidenced by more than half -- 56 percent, to be exact -- of U.S. households laying claim to at least one modern generation game console, according market research firm Nielsen. Not surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of consoles are located in the living room, which underscores that these devices are not just adept at playing games, but also serve double duty as media centers. What some might find surprising, however, is that the Nintendo Wii leads the way in the living... Read more...
Microsoft isn't too keen on discussing the Xbox 720 or whatever it plans to call its next generation game console, and apparently the Redmond outfit isn't all that keen on optical drives, either. We've heard reports that the next Xbox iteration might ditch optical storage hardware entirely, and now at least one website claims to have confirmed as much with an un-named source. The source tells MCV that Microsoft's hardware and software partners are under "the strictest NDA" they have ever signed, nevertheless they were willing to leak the fact that the Xbox 720 will ship sans a disc drive. Instead it will use a type of solid-state card storage, though it's unclear if that means it will have a... Read more...
The world needs another game console like it needs, well, another game console. They say 'three's a crowd' and there's already the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, so is there really room for another player to make a stand in the living room? Valve apparently thinks so and is reportedly working on a "Steam Box" console that just might have what it takes to find a place in your home theater. Citing un-named sources, The Verge says Valve has been drafting a specification sheet along with the required software that would be required for a third-party to build a Steam Box. There was even a hand-built prototype shown off to potential partners at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier... Read more...
If you own a PlayStation 3 and are addicted to online gaming, it's time to fall in love with the PC all over again. Or read a book or do whatever it is you do when you're not tapping into the PlayStation Network (PSN). Sony is planning to perform some heavy duty maintenance on the PlayStation Network later today that will take the service offline for about 14 hours, and possibly longer. "This significant PSN maintenance period is expected to start at just after noon Pacific and will last for several hours, until approximately 2am Pacific on Monday, March 5," Sony announced in a blog post. "Unlike typical maintenance events, consumers who are already signed-in to PSN will be signed-out, and consumers... Read more...
It's never been a foregone conclusion that Sony's PlayStation Vita would be a success, and in fact there were/are several factors working against it. For one, the device's launch in the U.S. ended up being delayed, and while it was released on time in Japan, there were complaints of glitches that drummed up bad publicity for the handheld console. And let's not forget that increasingly powerful smartphones and the rise of tablet PCs both threaten the very idea of a dedicated handheld console. Despite it all, Sony has already sold around 1.2 million PS Vita consoles. According to Forbes, Sony sold more than 620,000 PS Vita units in the U.S., Europe, and Australia since launching the device two... Read more...
Kids today know nothing of dragging a sagging pants pocket full of quarters or tokens to the local arcade, which means they also missed out on some gaming classics, like Rampage, Defender, Joust, and Spy Hunter. Sure, they're a little lame by today's standards, but if you have a nostalgic itch to scratch, $0.99 and a trip to Apple's App Store will scratch it. Warner Bros. Interactive just released its Midway Arcade App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices, a collection of 10 classic arcade titles, including the ones previously mentioned. The full list, as described by WB, includes the following: Spy Hunter: Race down a freeway in an armed sports car and destroy enemies while protecting civilian... Read more...
Slaying dragons isn't easy, and if that's your goal in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can use all the help you can get. Provided you're rocking a GPU built by Nvidia, new GeForce drivers released today will give you a "game changing performance boost" to work with, up to a whopping 45 percent, according to Nvidia's release notes. Nvidia is basing that off of performance measured with a GeForce GTX 560 at 1080p with Ultra settings in indoor scenes when compared with the previous driver. The new GeForce 295.73 drivers also offer up to two times the performance in Mass Effect 3 with SLI compared to 285.62. Other highlights include; GeForce-exclusive quality enhancements with ambient occlusion... Read more...

"BioWare is pulling out all of the stops for Mass Effect 3 to ensure it’s the best and boldest game in the series," said Robert 'RazerGuy' Krakoff, President, Razer USA. Forget about your classic Air Jordan sneakers from Nike, or your Kobe 7 kicks and Lebron 9 shoes (both also from Nike). Arguably the coolest pair of sneakers ever were the Converse Weapons, which could be bought about two-and-a-half decades ago in obnoxious yellow or garish green, depending on whether you favored Magic Johnson or Larry Bird. I don't care what anyone says, if I owned a pair today, I'd lace them up every time I step on the basketball court. Unfortunately, the Converse Weapon has long since been retired, just like the two legends who endorsed them. But if you're like me and are determined to let your geek side show with a nod towards nostalgia, Converse has another pair of awesome... Read more...
