The recently announced HTC One M9 may be the “new hotness” with its 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and upgraded cameras, but there are still millions of customers out there rocking the previous generation One M8. One M8 users on T-Mobile received their OTA Lollipop update on February 9 and nearly a month later, it’s time for Verizon customers to enjoy some sweet Lollipop goodness. The OTA Update, which is Software Version SU4A – 3.28.605.9, SU4B – 4.17.605.5, includes Lollipop-based improvements to the Notification Panel, Lock Screen, and Recent Apps. Google’s Material Design language should permeate through the operating system, but you will still have to wade through Verizon’s... Read more...
When it comes to Android smartphones for folks that are looking for respectable performance and specs at a reasonable price, look no further than Motorola. While Motorola chastises its competitors for pushing high-end smartphones that can touch the $1,000 mark (and higher), it is happy to sell you devices like the Moto E and Moto G that cost less than $200 off contract. Two weeks ago, the second generation Moto E leaked to the Internet courtesy of product listing on Best Buy’s website (you can actually still view it here). That product listing clued us in on a prepaid version the second generation Moto E for Sprint’s wireless network. Today, the Verizon Wireless version of the smartphone leaked,... Read more...
T-Mobile seems to be leading the way — among America’s four largest wireless carriers — with bargain basement pricing and innovative “Un-carrier” infinitives that have been raising eyebrows among its competition. T-Mobile may have an advantage when it comes to pricing and features like Data Stash, but its nationwide coverage doesn’t come close to matching the reach of larger carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless. So when the America’s largest wireless carrier, Verizon Wireless, starts cutting prices, we really start to take notice. Starting tomorrow, the wireless carrier will begin cutting prices on its MORE Everything plans below 10GB. That means that 1GB of shared data will now cost you... Read more...
With all the news and rumors surrounding the upcoming launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S6, it’s easy to forget about the company’s current flagship smartphone: the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 may not have lived up to Samsung’s sales expectations, but there are still millions of the devices out in the wild. And a large subset of those smartphones can now access an upgrade that users have been craving for months: Android 5.0 Lollipop. According to Droid-Life, there are actually two updates to download. The first one is a small prerequisite update to prepare the phone for Lollipop. The second update is the actual VRU1BNLC build of Android 5.0 Lollipop. The changelog from Verizon points out the following... Read more...
AT&T and Verizon Wireless received a lot of backlash from privacy advocates back in October when it was discovered both carriers were using a Unique Identifier Header (UIDH) to track its customers. Unlike regular cookies, which can be deleted by users, a UIDH cannot be deleted and is used primarily for targeted advertising purposes. Since there was no option to disable the UIDH by the customers, they have been dubbed “supercookies” by critics. Feeling the heat from a growing chorus of critics, AT&T decided to bail on supercookies in November. "It has been phased off our network," said AT&T spokeswoman Emily Edmonds at the time. "We have completed testing of the numeric code that would... Read more...
T-Mobile shocked the tech community when it announced its Data Stash program that not only allows customers to rollover unused data month-to-month for up to a year, but also starts you off with 10GB “just because.” Not one to be left in the dust, AT&T countered with its own, inferior program that allows Mobile Share Value customers to rollover data for up to one month. When AT&T jumped onboard with rollover data, we assumed that Verizon Wireless wouldn’t be too far behind. Well, we couldn’t have been more wrong — Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo confirmed today in an interview with CNET that his company has no plans of offering rollover data plans. "We're a leader, not a follower,"... Read more...
Motorola released its flagship Droid Turbo smartphone just over a month ago, but that doesn’t mean that you have to wait until after the New Year to get one for an extremely attractive price point — that is, if you’re an existing customer or planning on making a switch to Verizon Wireless. The Droid Turbo normally sells for $199 with a new, two-year contract, and that isn’t changing with the Best Buy’s newest promotion. However, those that qualify for a device upgrade through Verizon Wireless can score a $100 Best Buy gift card when they purchase the phone either with a new two-year upgrade or with an upgrade through Verizon Next. Best Buy ups the ante if you’re a new customer to Verizon Wireless... Read more...
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Yesterday, Sprint caught the attention of numerous wireless subscribers with its “Cut Your Bill in Half” promotion. The United States’ third-place wireless provider promised AT&T and Verizon Wireless customers that it would cut their bills in half if they made the switch to Sprint. The promotion, however, was loaded with caveats with the biggest one being that you had to trade in your existing smartphone to Sprint with no compensation in return. In addition, customers that don’t handover their current smartphone within 30 days are hit with a $200 charge per line. It’s this part of the promotion that makes it a profitable venture for Sprint.... Read more...
The pricing war between wireless carriers continues to heat up. AT&T initiated a limited time promotion back in September that doubled the data available for Mobile Share Value customers on existing 15GB and higher plans. Verizon Wireless and Sprint then followed up with competing plans of their own. Now, Sprint is looking to kick some dirt in AT&T and Verizon Wireless’ eyes with a new promotion. The company is introducing a new “Cut Your Bill in Half” promotion that will dramatically reduce the price of your wireless plan if you leave AT&T or Verizon Wireless. Starting on Friday, AT&T or Verizon Wireless customers can upload a copy of their current bill to Sprint.com or visit... Read more...
When Motorola introduced the Moto X last year, the company was owned by Google. In our hands-on review of the first-generation Moto X, we pointed out that the collaboration between Motorola and Android engineers led to an incredibly sleek device and a good user experience. Although the first-generation Moto X didn’t have quite as impressive hardware specifications as its high-end competitors at the time, the phone still performed very well. What’s more, the Moto X also included a number of unique extras, like touchless controls that worked exceptionally well. Fast forward to today, and a lot has changed on the mobile front. Google is selling Motorola Mobility to Lenovo and closing... Read more...
Update 9/30/2015: Motorola just launched the Moto X Pure Edition, a larger flagship device with a 5.7-inch display, a faster processor, more RAM and the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS, along with an enhanced camera and some interesting new hands-free voice-activated features. The second gen Moto X you see here is still a great midrange phone but Motorola has just release a new flagship, so we'd highly suggest you check that out as well. We all want more from our smartphones. Whether it’s more screen real estate, more battery life, a better camera, or more storage for pictures, videos, and games, it seems there’s always something we could use more of from our phones. This smartphone boasts “more screen size, more camera, more everything” according to the company. We're not trying to pick on Verizon Wireless today (really, we're not), but we can't help it if the wireless carrier insists on putting targets on its back. The latest bit of news from Big Red is that it's getting rid of early upgrade eligibility and requiring that its subscribers ride out the entire length of their contracts before getting a new phone at a discounted rate. Previously VZW subscribers would be eligible to upgrade at a reduced rate after 20 months. That's still an eternity with how fast the smartphone market evolves, but it was certainly nice to have the option of purchasing something new ahead of schedule. Not anymore. If your phone is this old, you're probably eligible for an... Read more...
Verizon Wireless rolled out a couple of new basic pre-paid plans for chatter bugs on a budget, and included in both tiers is unlimited data. The first is a $35 plan that buys you 500 monthly minutes of talk time and unlimited text and data. If you go over the allotted minutes, you're charged 25 cents for each one thereafter. Or you can plan ahead and pony up for the $50/month plan, which offers unlimited minutes too. Neither of these plans require a service agreement, and at a glance, they seem to be killer responses to T-Mobile's new pricing plans. So, what's the catch? Verizon's new plans only apply to a collection of four feature phones, including the LG Cosmos 2, LG Extravert, Samsung Gusto... Read more...

Sharing photos with one's friends and family is a common, everyday occurrence. Instagram has gained over 100 million photo sharing users in just two years, and this is just one of many outlets people use to share photos with the people they love. While sharing pictures taken with your smartphone is easy and convenient since you can upload and share while on the go, the picture quality you get from a smartphone isn't quite on the same level as a standalone digital camera, with a larger sensor and better optics. Connected cameras such as the Samsung Galaxy Camera promise the best of both worlds for users who want to share their photos right away but who also want the image quality that only comes...
