The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 was disclosed this morning, which the hard drive manufacturer touts as “the fastest high-capacity drive to date.” The 7200.11 is the company’s first 1TB hard disk drive, achieved with the use of only four platters (as opposed to five). Power consumption is modest at 8W idle, which they say, when taken into consideration with the four platters, would minimize heat that harms drives in the long run. Sustained transfer rates measure at about 105MBps. Nonetheless, with high capacity drives, the price is hardly proportional (they should be on sale for about $400). Intel and design firm Ziba have teamed up to build a prototype for what's being called the world's thinnest notebook. New ground has been broken in the hard drive industry with the release of Hitachi's 1 terabyte hard drive featuring perpendicular recording. The hard drive company has also discussed the idea of a new kind of HD/flash memory hybrid. Hard drives in the future would have flash memory built in that would protect the device from data loss by housing all the information the system calls on the most.
