It is no secret that Advanced Micro Devices hasn't had the best couple of quarters, but they seem to have a very deep strategy for getting back in black.  Obviously that strategy includes excellent new products such as the Radeon HD 3000 series and the Phenom CPUs and chipsets, but that's only part of the picture.Apparently AMD has entered into a deal with Russian tech firm Angstrem to provide them with the technology and know-how necessary to fabricate chips using the now 'old' 130 nm process.“On November 22nd at a press conference Pierre Brunswick, AMD Sales and Marketing Vice President in Russia, disclosed some of the company's plans regarding the equipment and technology supply to Zelenograd... Remember reading about all those Internet startups that had Venture Capitalists with wheelbarrows full of gold bars showing up at your door if you could slap together a PowerPoint presentation that had "2.0" written on it somewhere? That seems to be a very rare thing these days, and entrepreneurs with a tech outlook are growing their businesses the old fashioned way again: with an idea, no money, no sleep, and not much help. The story of Landy Ung and Wan Hsi Yuan's 8coupons.com text-message coupon business is the stuff of current startup economy. At an October startup camp in Manhattan, Ung, in a ponytail and puffy vest, and Yuan, in an "8coupons.com, One Free Hug" T-shirt, exchanged cards with... If watching all 3 “Back To The Future” movies was supposed to teach us anything, it's that people shouldn't tinker with time.  Nor should anyone modify DMC-12s without serious contemplation of the consequences, but perhaps attempting to treat time like a toy was perhaps the more serious message.Apparently nobody got this message out to the good people in the U.S. Congress, and their 2005 change to the daylight savings system has caused all kinds of havoc.  Thankfully nothing along the lines of Armageddon-esque/Y2K-horror story events seem to have happened, but rather plenty of small things seem to have gone wrong.  Here are a few interesting stories about such events:“At least... Is your boss a jerk? Mine is. I'm self-employed. The king of all bad bosses has got to be Fairchild Semiconductor.  It constantly drove bright, forward thinking tech pioneers out of the building. Their loss is all our gain. "Fairchildren" started Intel in 1968, for instance. And lots, lots more of the most important companies on earth. In the 1980s, the folks at the Semiconductor Materials and Equipment International trade group assembled a flow chart that tracked "Fairchildren" who created spinoffs such as Advanced Micro Devices, LSI Logic and Electroglas. Perhaps the most important was the venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. A more recent parallel to the Fairchild diaspora... Read more...

You won't have to say "cheese" any longer with this new Sony camera feature.  Using face detection technology, the camera won't snap a high-definition picture until a selected subject smiles."Using the smile recognition shutter function selected by the touch panel, you can pick which of up to eight people is the key smile," said Akira Tokuse who works in Sony product development. "In a parents-and-baby shot, you could select the baby." The "Say Cheese" technology has three setting levels, from a slight grin to a belly laugh. I can see this making child photography easier - just set the camera and concentrate on getting the child to smile -... Read more...
It wasn't the first cellular phone technology, but it was the development which led to a global expansion of cellular networks.  In 1987 GSM, or the Global System for Mobile Communications got underway. On 7 September 1987, 15 phone firms signed an agreement to build mobile networks based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) Communications. Robert Conway, head of the GSM Association, said the memorandum of understanding signed in 1987 is widely seen as the moment when the global mobile industry got under way. Some would say that 1987 was also the beginning of the lack of an ability to travel on subways, trains, and buses without constant chatter, but that's another argument.... Read more...
On Wall Street, one man's loss is often another man's gain. And for investors, if one sector of the market goes bad, you don't hide the money in the mattress, you look for another sector. Since financial companies are taking a pounding over fallout from subprime mortgage investments, everybody's heading for the exits there and pounding on the door of Technology to make their money now. Standard and Poor's Scott Kessler talked to BusinessWeek about this "Tech Stock Summer of Love." In the last 13 weeks through Aug. 24, the S&P Information Technology index has been the best performer among the 10 sectors tracked by Standard & Poor's, with a gain of 3.1%, vs. a 2.4% drop in... This past week, we attended an event where Intel gave us specific detail on the new hardware and features that are part of their vPro platform technology for 2007. If you’re unfamiliar with vPro, it’s not a singular product or chip. Like Centrino for example, vPro is an Intel platform technology that’s comprised of a CPU, chipset, network controller, and proprietary software, that when combined, offer powerful hardware-based security and management capabilities for the enterprise.            Intel Core 2 Duo Processors,... A new cooling technique, called ionic cooling, has now been demonstrated by researchers at Purdue.  The technique involves the harnessing of ionic winds between two electrodes, which are placed on the back of the chip.Sadly, the Intel funded technology currently requires massive amounts of energy in order to reach its maximum cooling potential which is about 2.5 times that of normal air cooling: “For the prototype demonstration, tiny electrodes were placed 10 millimeters apart, on either side of a chip, and thousands of volts were applied to them. The positive electrode was a wire that ran across the anode side of the chip, while several negatively charged cathode electrodes emitted electrons... Read more...
We posted some imagery from Valve's upcoming Team Fortress 2 in our coverage of AMD's ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT launch, but there is only so much a few screenshots can convey. The X38 chipset that Intel is feverishly preparing for a launch this fall, is due to ship with 2 new “extreme” technologies: “The two new technologies are named Extreme Memory and Extreme Tuning Utility. Both new marketing lead architectures will be introduced along with the X38 chipset in October this year, according to motherboard makers.” Extreme Memory is most likely a technology similar to that of NVIDIA's SLI Memory. In theory it should allow users to plug a pair of supported memory modules into an X38-powered motherboard and have the motherboard either automatically select the best performance option or allow users to select from a list of pre-defined memory speeds/timings/voltages... Early rumors about FB-DIMMs claimed that they were going to offer better bandwidth, power/heat efficiency, all adding minimal latency.  Theory and reality don’t always end up being the same thing, and FB-DIMMs are great at some tasks, but there’s a fairly large latency penalty.  Add to that the fact that the FB-DIMMs are significantly more expensive than existing DDR-2 DIMMs, and you can see why the technology has only taken off in the server/workstation markets.AMD has developed a method to integrate a chip onto the motherboard that should offer many of the benefits of the FB-DIMMs with standard DDR-3 DIMMs.  If the technology, dubbed G3MX, takes off, it could end up being used on normal desktops...
