High-end smartphones carry uptown prices, with some flagships commanding north of $1,000. You could buy a decent gaming laptop for less than what some of the top phones cost. Even OnePlus, the Never Settle brand, has not been immune to rising smartphone prices. However, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has said once again that a cheaper lineup is coming. This is welcome news. OnePlus has built a reputation for cramming premium features into smartphones that undercut the competition on pricing, though some of the models are still a bit expensive. For example, the OnePlus 8 Pro starts at $899, and if you opt for the version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, you're looking at $999. That puts it in the... Read more...
OnePlus was once the champion of introducing flagship smartphones without the “flagship price” that is often associated with them. However, over the years, each new OnePlus flagship has adhered to the “price creep” that has become the norm with new smartphone releases. Things came to a head this year with the OnePlus 8 Pro, which starts at $899 – not too far off from the Samsung Galaxy S20 family and Motorola Edge+. Sure, the standard OnePlus 8 starts at $699, but it skips some key features like wireless charging and a 120Hz display. For those that want a current-generation OnePlus smartphone, but don’t want to fork over at least $700, the company... Read more...
Few people will miss the era of 60Hz smartphones when it finally comes to an end someday. Who knows when that day will actually arrive, but in the meantime, smartphone makers are slowing migrating to faster displays. To show the benefits of a faster refresh rate, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau uploaded a couple of video clips to Twitter highlighting the 120Hz display on the upcoming OnePlus 8. I've often said that 120Hz is 'gaming phone' territory, and that's true—the Razer Phone 1 and Razer Phone 2 both sport a 120Hz display, as does the ASUS ROG Phone II. At the same time, we are seeing non-gaming phones adopt the faster refresh rate as well. OnePlus confirmed it will arrive on its OnePlus 8 series,... Read more...
When it comes to unreleased smartphones, leaks are inevitable prior to launch. OnePlus hasn’t been shy about revealing images, videos and even specifications for its unreleased smartphones prior to launch (on its own terms), and it is at it again with the upcoming OnePlus 7T. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau provided two shots of the rear of the OnePlus 7T accompanied by a few design sketches of the smartphones. On the back, we can clearly see a black circular pod that houses three camera sensors arranged horizontally. Below the camera area is a circular LED flash. According to a recent leak via Twitter, it's rumored that the three cameras will consist of a 48MP wide angle sensor, 16MP ultra-wide-angle... Read more...
We've seen renders and real-life images of a new OnePlus 7T Pro that is allegedly coming later this year, but it appears that OnePlus has another smartphone in the works as well. OnePlus is known for packing a lot of features into its phones for hundreds less than the competition, and this new phone is confirmed to be cheaper than the OnePlus 7 Pro while keeping one of its defining features. The current OnePlus 7 Pro starts at $669, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau says that this new device will be even more affordable. He didn't get into specifics, but maybe we'll see a device that dips back below the $600 price point? Lau did confirm, however, that even though this device will be cheaper,... Read more...
We're beginning to learn a bit more about the OnePlus TV, which is set to go up against likes of Samsung and Sony in the marketplace, albeit hopefully at lower prices. A OnePlus exec has now confirmed specs for at least one model in the new smart TV product family. According to the tweet from Akis Evangelidis, there will be a 55-inch model with QLED technology (it is not known is QLED tech will proliferate throughout the entire lineup). QLED has been championed by Samsung in its high-end television, and TCL has recently jumped onboard with its 8-Series Roku TVs. You can read more about QLED in our in-depth article right here. Although the 55-inch model has now been confirmed... Read more...
Give the OnePlus team credit, it knows how to hype a product launch and create buzz. It's an art that companies like Apple have mastered, and while OnePlus is not on the same playing field as Tim Cook and company, both are really good at getting media attention. That said, one of the big reasons the OnePlus is so popular is because of the value proposition. Will that be the case when the OnePlus Two comes out? There have been rumors that the OnePlus Two would top the $500 mark, though don't believe it. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau put to rest exaggerated price claims by promising on his company's Google+ page that the OnePlus Two will sell for less than $450. And then he said something...odd. "Honestly,...
