NVIDIA's Max-Q technology has only been on the market for about a year, but in that time quite few OEMs have jumped on the bandwagon. And for good reason. Max-Q is, or wants to be, the answer to a problem that has plagued mobile gamers since the first gaming laptop was birthed, spanked, and shipped off into the real world. NVIDIA appears to be gearing up to deliver some new GPU flavor to the mobile gaming market. The only thing we know about this new graphics engine right now comes from a Linux driver changelog that calls out added support for a "GeForce GTX1050 Ti with Max-Q Design." There are no tidbits about clock speeds or other performance details noted in the changelog. The deal with Max-Q Design GPU in laptops is that they are essentially desktop-equivalent configurations but designed to be more power efficient and with better cooling design that allow longer sustained performance over time with quieter acoustic profiles in thinner lighter machines as well. Gigabyte has gone and beefed up the graphics processor in its thin and relatively light Aero 15 gaming laptop. The new Aero 15 X model swaps out the GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 memory found in the non-X SKU to a more powerful GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. NVIDIA's Computex 2017 unveiling of the new GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design technology for laptops was presented with the usual charismatic polish and enthusiasm that the company's leather-clad CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang is well known for. Frankly, it seemed a little too good to be true. NVIDIA this morning announced its Max-Q Design initiative, which allows for ultra-thin gaming notebooks that use high-powered graphics cards like the potent Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1080. One of those laptop that adheres to the Max-Q Design directive is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus. The gaming notebook is just 0.7 inches thick and weighs in at under five pounds. The ROG Zephyrus features a 15.6-inch 1080p G-SYNC enabled IPS panel, which can pump its refresh rate up to 120Hz.
