Around this time last year, there was much hoopla over Apple's first Macs with the company's home-grown Apple Silicon, dubbed the M1. Almost immediately, rumors swirled about what the follow-up, rumored to be called the M1X, would have in store. Never mind that at the time, Apple released a power-efficient champion with four high-performance cores that could tear through just about any workload, while simultaneously rewriting the book on integrated graphics performance. No, the 2020 Mac mini was old news; we just had to know what was next.  And then 2021 kicked off and it seemed nothing would change. Sure, the 24" iMac got a redesign, but it had the same M1 silicon as the smaller MacBooks... Read more...
As more revamped MacBook Pro models end up in the hands of consumers and a wider swath of reviewers, we're getting a broader view of performance. Namely, of how Apple's M1 Max and M1 Pro perform in different types of workloads an benchmarks. To that end, both chips have now left and impressive mark on PassMark. A current snapshot of PassMark's single-threaded CPU scores shows Apple's latest silicon sitting atop the stack, ahead of x86 chips like Intel's Core i9-11900K (Rocket Lake) and AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X (Zen 3). Have a look... Interestingly, the M1 Pro actually claims the top spot with a score of 3,880, edging out the burlier M1 Max, which scored 3,858. The disparity is close enough to be considered... Historically, teardowns of Apple's MacBook Pro laptops have not gone all that well, to put it nicely. Apple has not exactly been a champion of the right-to-repair movement, and more like a begrudging participant. Is the new MacBook Pro with Apple's upgraded M1 Pro and M1 Max processors any different? We'll have to wait to find out, but a quick gut-check reveals that Apple included at least one very welcome design change. Replacing the battery inside the revamped MacBook Pro lineup appears much easier this time around. This is something that is often underappreciated. Laptops in general (not just Apple's) have trended away from user-replaceable battery packs to integrated units, as overall notebook... Read more...
Well now, that didn't take very long at all—Apple's revamped MacBook Pro 16 and 14 laptops with their fancy new M1 Pro silicon is hot off the assembly line, and already discounted! We're not talking about a gigantic savings, mind you, but to be reduced before they even release to retail? Sure, we'll take it. There are also quite a few Samsung products on sale. Starting with Apple's latest stuff, you can score the MacBook Pro 14 for $1,949.99 at Amazon (save $50), or the MacBook Pro 16 for $2,649.99 at Amazon (save $50 as well). The smaller of the two wields an M1 Pro processor with an 8-core CPU and 14-core GPU, to go along with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB solid state drive. Meanwhile, the... Read more...
