Similar to Midas, nearly everything Apple touches these days turns to gold. Figuratively, of course, though also in a somewhat literal sense if the rumors about a gold iPhone 5S turn out to be true. A gold iPhone 5S is way on the opposite end of the spectrum of earlier rumors suggesting Apple may release a line of low-cost iPhone models made of polycarbonate plastic. Why gold? The obvious answer is that it's a symbol of luxury. Plus, it's apparently one of the "easiest colors to anodize onto an iPhone," according to Rene Ritchie of iMore. If Apple is indeed venturing away from offering just black and white models (the polycarbonate iPhones are rumored to ship in various color options similar... Read more...
Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) came and went with nary a new iPhone announcement, but that doesn't mean the Cupertino outfit isn't readying the launch of another generation of smartphones. Potentially serving as further evidence that Apple's close to announcing a new model, a French website posted what it claims are photos of iPhone 5S batteries. The leaked photos show trays of batteries on the assembly line and supposedly were shot by a subcontractor working for Apple. These are early sample batteries that don't even have the appropriate connector attached just yet. Voltage and capacity are both unknown at this time. Size-wise, the batteries appear to be the same dimension as... Read more...
Apple's in a bit of pickle. The Cupertino company has to figure out how to regain its mojo in the mobile space by releasing a smartphone with fancy new features, but not go so far overboard that it ends up alienating its rabid fan base. If you recall, the initial reaction to the iPhone 5 was somewhat subdued, not because it wasn't a great smartphone -- it was, and still is -- but because consumers have come to expect so much from Apple. Will the next iPhone generate the kind of excitement that the iPhone 5 failed to elicit? We'll find out soon enough. In the meantime, the folks at Boy Genius Report (BGR) somehow obtained high-resolution photos supposedly of several internal components used in... Read more...
As the days roll by, we inch closer to the inevitable launch of Apple's next iPhone, presumably the iPhone 5S, and the are no shortages of rumors and leaked information to digest. The newest bit of supposed inside info comes from sources within the upstream supply chain, according to news and rumor site Digitimes, which reports the iPhone 5S will start shipping at the end of May. Apple's next iPhone isn't going to be a major upgrade, just a "slightly enhanced version" of Apple's current handset, Digitimes says. Hence why it's likely to receive the iPhone 5S moniker. It will feature a higher end processor than the custom Apple A6 SoC (System-on-Chip) found in the iPhone 5, which boasts a dual-core... Read more...
The rumor mill rarely takes a break when it comes to Apple devices, and all we've been hearing about the past few weeks is chatter about the next iPhone. Specifically, there's been talk of Apple introducing a lower cost iPhone model made of polycarbonate plastic to compete with all those $99 Android smartphones, and of course it seems inevitable we'll see an iPhone 5S in the near future. In case you'd forgotten about either rumor, an analyst with KGI Securities just issued a new research report saying both devices are destined to debut alongside iOS 7 this June, with retail availability expected in July. "Both dates are earlier than last year’s roadmap," writes KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi... Read more...
Today marks the start of another week, which inevitably means another Apple rumor. The latest is that the upcoming iPhone 5S -- a device that hasn't yet been confirmed but is likely in the works -- will sport a custom Apple A7 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. There's even some leaked photos that claim to show the new hardware. According to iOSDoc, the photos it received come from a "very reliable source," one that has confirmed previous rumors to the site in the past. Take from that what you will, but here's the supposed money shot: Image Source: iOSDoc We cleaned it up a bit, but even so, it's difficult to tell if it's a legit photo or a fake. Assuming it's real, you can expect the iPhone... Read more...
A Chinese mobile phone information website claims it has seen both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 at Apple's suppliers, and that both could be released by the end of the year. Apple has yet to confirm the existence of either device, though this isn't the first we've heard of the rumored models. What would be odd, however, is if Apple were to release both devices during the same calendar year, especially now that we're already mid-way through February. According to the latest chatter, the iPhone 5S resembles the iPhone 5 while the iPhone 6 is supposedly thinner and lighter. It also has a bigger touchscreen display that measures 5 inches, which would explain why Apple might decide to release both models... Read more...
The next iPhone model may ship in a variety of colors. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek wrote in a note to investors that the rumored iPhone 5S is destined for a June 2013 release, and that it will be available in 6-8 color options. It's unclear if he has some inside info he's working with, or if he's basing his prediction on the fact that Apple's newest generation iPod touch comes in black, white, pink, yellow, blue, and red. As Misek sees it, the iPhone 5S will include a new super HD camera/screen, an upgraded battery, and NFC support, SFGate reports. Other than the release time frame, Misek isn't really go out on a limb with any of his predictions. NFC support is almost a given after it was skipped... Read more...
The iPhone 5 has been available for two and a half months, and quite frankly, we're surprised it took this long for the first pics of what's supposed to be the inevitable iPhone 5S to appear online. But they're here now, and assuming they're real, you can expect the iPhone 5S to look just like its predecessor. No big surprise there. After enlarging the screen for the first time since the iPhone debuted and swapping out the familiar (and proprietary) dock connector for a new one, Apple probably isn't real eager on making major changes to the design this early in the game. Instead, the iPhone 5S will likely sport upgraded hardware and perhaps a few tweaks to appease Foxconn in the manufacturing... Read more...
You have to know that when you buy an Apple device, something newer and shinier is just around the corner, usually a refreshed version of the item you just purchased it. That's especially true if there's not an "S" attached to your iDevice, which is something early iPhone 5 adopters are about to find out. Citing a Chinese-language Commercial Times report, DigiTimes says Apple is about to begin a trial run of a new version of the iPhone 5, presumably the iPhone 5S, as early as December. Initial production will be somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 units. As for a release, Apple is reportedly targeting the first quarter of 2013. It's unclear what the iPhone 5S will bring to the table that's not... Read more...
