Over the last few years, integrated graphics in modern processors have seen something of a revival, particularly from AMD's camp. Raven Ridge's Vega-based (Ryzen 3000 series) integrated GPU provides a surprisingly capable IGP solution that lets folks play some of the latest games, albeit with the resolution and detail levels turned down. Intel's Gen 11 Iris graphics in Ice Lake has also shown promise in some of the current crop of laptops. Every year, AMD and NVIDIA re-brand their GPU product lines, regardless of whether the underlying hardware has changed. This annual maneuver is a sop to OEMs, who like yearly refreshes and higher numbers. The big introduction NVIDIA is making this year is what it calls GPU Boost 2.0. Better Boosting: When NVIDIA launched the GeForce GTX Titan in February, it discussed a new iteration of GPU Boost technology that measured GPU temperature rather than estimating TDP. AMD always hosts an event in the shadow of Intel's Developer Forum, so it wasn't surprising to hear the company was demoing its upcoming Zacate processor this week. Zacate is the codename associated with AMD's 18W dual-core APU and will target the $500 notebook market. The second chip, Ontario, is a 9W APU that'll chase after Atom's business. NVIDIA has made themselves known as a hardware company, and more recently, an innovation company. The company used to battle with ATI in the GPU department, but now they compete with ARM, Intel and Qualcomm in the microprocessor market. But that's not all. The world has come a long way in the world of embedded computing, with more and more power now able to squeeze onto integrated circuits versus having to use discrete processors and the like. Integrated graphics are far more powerful now than they were, and integrated processors in general are far more capable now than ever before. But there is still a long ways to go in making fewer things discrete, namely the battery. The battery has held back innovation in consumer electronics for as long as portable devices have been around; regardless of how great a design is, there must always be consideration made for a battery. We suppose even the best laid plans can fall apart, and it seems that one of Intel's most promising endeavors is no longer active as of today. In a new post by the company's own Bill Kircos, he addresses Intel's stance on graphics-related programs, giving vague updates to a broad variety of topics. But one area wasn't vague at all. With the International Solid-State Circuits Conference less than a week away, Intel has released additional details on its hexa-core desktop, next generation mobile and dual-core Westmere processors. Much of the dual-core data was revealed last month when the CPU manufacturer launched Clarkdale (our review is here if you want additional information on the CPU and its integrated graphics core). In a somewhat similar flap to that over Wikipedia and pictures of the prophet Muhammad, Sony has delayed the hotly-anticipated PS3 game LittleBigPlanet due to the discovery of background music tracks containing two expressions found in the Quran. The game had been scheduled for North American release Tuesday. Instead, Sony says it will start shipping LittleBigPlanet to N.A. retailers on October 27. Copies of the game that have already shipped elsewhere in the world will be recalled from retailers and replaced, according to Sony. According to a report on the Digitimes website, NVIDIA is planning to launch a few new chipsets for the AMD platform complete with next-gen IGPs and PCI Express 2.0 support."The chipset will come out in two versions, the high-end MCP72XE and the mainstream MCP72P, both support HyperTransport 3.0 and upcoming AMD Phenom processors. The MCP72XE will adopt a two chip design and has 35 PCI Express lanes with PCI Express 2.0 support, and is cable of dual 16x or quad 8x SLI modes. The MCP72P will adopt a single chip design and has 18 PCI Express Lanes. HKEPC reports that Intel's upcoming G35 (Bearlake G+) IGP chipset will have complete support for both HDMI connections and HDCP. With Vista and high-definition formats such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray promising to utilize HDCP, the inclusion of this technology is surely a necessity for Intel should they wish to hang onto the market share they currently have. Thankfully, the HDMI connection will also simplify things for users as the single cable can handle both audio and video duties. The folks at HKEPC have managed to get their hands on the AsRock AM2NF6-VSTA motherboard which is based upon NVIDIA's next generation MCP61 IGP chipset. Utilizing a single chipset package, the new NVIDIA IGP platform is passively cooled despite featuring a new graphics core based around the GeForce 7 series of GPU's. HKEPC has some exclusive info regarding Intel's next generation integrated graphics platform. Apparently, the upcoming G965 IGP will support DirectX10 as well as Shader Model 4.0. Rounding out the features, we also find a new limit of 256MB of shared memory, Anisotropic Filtering (finally), and hardware H.264 decoding, and complete WGF 2.0/OpenGL 2.0 support. DigiTimes reports that Intel's next generation IGP slated for launch prior to Windows Vista will be equipped with enough performance features and functionality to pose a legitimate threat to ATI, VIA, and SiS. This new IGP will support DX9, Shader Model 3.0, OpenGL 1.5, Advanced De-Interlacing, MPEG-2 hardware acceleration, and HDMI output.
