Garmin has acquired MetriGear, the maker of "Vector" a motion sensor platform that measures a cyclist’s performance. Vector won industry acclaim in late 2009 but needed a backer to bring this cool bike device to market. Vector tracks a broad number of factors to give the cyclist data on cadence and power (in watts). It measures how much each leg contributes to the effort, how much force is being used when the cyclist pulls the pedal up or pushes it down, and so on. Vector uses a sensor that is placed into the hollow spindle of the bicycle's pedals, with the battery pack attached to the crank. Humans like to use energy. We also waste a ton of it, sometimes without realizing. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) released a study last week, one that looked into just how much energy our gaming consoles are using. The study (.PDF), titled, "Lowering the Cost of Play: Improving the Energy Efficiency of Video Game Consoles,"was done by NRDC with and Ecos Consulting.The study, which they say is the first ever comprehensive study on the energy use of video game consoles, estimates that American video game consoles alone use the equivalent of the amount of energy used by the city of San Diego annually: 16 billion kWh per year. Well, Wal-Mart may be having trouble keeping up with iTunes as far as being the top music retailer, but it doesn't have iTunes as a competitor among video games.
