Samsung Electronics has finally put to good use its 4Gb low-power memory chips – the ones they had announced earlier this year - and begun shipments of their high-density 32GB DDR3 registered DIMMs.The modules are built on Samsung's own 50nm process, operate at 1.35V - slightly lower than the standard 1.5V - and the company hopes it'll meet the demand for less power-hungry hardware that currently drives the industry.According to the company the 4Gb DDR3 modules improve throughput by about 20 percent over a regular 1.5V DDR3, and pack a massive 72 memory chips plus register control (ie: 1 row of 8+1 stacks of 4 chips on each side of the DIMM), maximizing memory density and efficiency.Heat in datacenters,... Leave it to Rambus to keep the memory industry from resting on its laurels. Currently, DDR3 has a data rate limit of 3200Mbps, but all that's gearing up to change. Announced today, Rambus has unveiled a set of innovations that can advance computing main memory beyond said limit, and needless to say, these "advancements" are available now for licensing. The collection of improvements promises to let designers achieve higher memory data rates, higher effective throughput, better power efficiency and the increased capacity necessary for future computing applications. Craig Hampel, Rambus Fellow, gloated quite heavily about the largely secretive announcement: "Product advancements in multi-core computing,... Read more...
Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 Memory Hits 2533MHz, Sets World Record for DDR3 Memory Frequency Fremont, CA, May 20th, 2009 – Corsair, announced today that Corsair Labs has set the world record for DDR3 frequency on a Core i7 system.Corsair Labs achieved an astounding speed of DDR3-2533MHz with the aggressive memory timings of 7-8-7-20 using a triple-channel 6GB memory kit. This new world record, verified and validated by CPU-Z, the industry-standard tool for verifying overclocking results, is the first time this frequency has been achieved on a Core i7 system with 6GB of memory using three modules; most world record attempts use only a single 1GB module. Corsair Labs engineers used the award-winning... Read more...
While AMD's new Phenom II chips support DDR2 and are compatible with existing AM2+ boards, their full potential is only realized when equipped with a few sticks of fast DDR3. Unfortunately, so far, the pool of available AM3 / DDR3 capable boards has been rather small with only a few choices. The majority of available DDR3 equipped AM3 boards also lack the multiple PCI-E x16 slots necessary to support full CrossFireX, beyond just two cards. One of the few boards with both DDR3 and full CrossFireX support is ASUS' M4A79T Deluxe, which we briefly checked out in our initial look at the AMD AM3 Phenom IIs. Today, we'll be examining the second DDR3 full CrossFireX capable AM3 board to hit our... Read more...
Intel's new Xeon 5500 series CPU launched earlier this year within Apple's Mac Pro (of all systems), and has since filtered out to other computer makers and the retail market. Despite an overall contraction in demand for microprocessors, demand for this particular one has evidently remained strong. So strong, in fact, that Samsung Electronics is ramping up its 50 nanometer class production of DDR3 memory chips in response to increased demand stemming from the chip's debut.According to Samsung, DDR3 enables OEMs to design servers that use up to 192 gigabytes (GBs) per system (16GBx12) and provides numerous improvements over its predecessor, DDR2, including at least a 60 percent improvement in... There's quite a lot of variance in DDR3 modules today, which can certainly be overwhelming for potential new buyers. While the Core i7 processor is officially rated to run at only DDR3-1066 speeds, modules that can run at DDR3-2000 or even higher are available for the Core i7, and many new motherboards support speeds even greater than these. There is also the introduction of huge 12 GB (6 x 2 GB modules) capacity kits to consider, and we have latencies in the CAS 7 to CAS 9 range, all of which affect pricing of these various modules kits dramatically. Today, we're going to look at some of these new kits and see if we can break down what memory-related aspects users should look for when buying... Read more...
Since the great DRAM price plummet of 2007, memory prices continue to be extremely low. It's currently possible to pick up high capacity memory modules for very respectable prices. As the DRAM market is highly volatile, however, it's possible that we could see prices jump within the next month, week, or even by the day. However, it has been about a year since prices dropped, and things have yet to "recover", allowing prices to remain low. Regardless, continues to be a fairly good time to buy system memory. The majority of the really good deals are for DDR2 memory, which has completely flooded the market and is available for ultra low prices (under $30 for 4 GB in some cases). With virtually...
