The battle between Microsoft and Apple may have caused Microsoft to lose some of its luster in the global brand rankings.  The Redmond giant has slipped from number 11 to number 59 over the past three years."The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement. "The launch of a series of new products, following a long, relatively dormant period, will be closely watched to see if it will have a positive impact on the Microsoft brand."Microsoft remains a strongly recognized brand in virtually all markets, and it's very likely that other surveys wouldn't rank the company quite so low.... Today, October 8, at 8:00AM Pacific Time, Intel launched a new Web 2.0-inspired Web site. Similar to Digg, it offers a forum where people can submit and vote for their favorite software company or product. You can go to the site, register, set up an account and start submitting stories, sites, etc. They are most interested in software companies, but they are also interested in technologies in general. The site has the following categories: Digital Home, Mobility, Enterprise, and Healthcare which are, of course, the same as the various “platforms” Intel supports. There’s also an Other category, naturally. Much like Digg, you can vote up a story, or “bury” it.This site has been used internally at... Read more...

A new cooling technique, called ionic cooling, has now been demonstrated by researchers at Purdue.  The technique involves the harnessing of ionic winds between two electrodes, which are placed on the back of the chip.Sadly, the Intel funded technology currently requires massive amounts of energy in order to reach its maximum cooling potential which is about 2.5 times that of normal air cooling: “For the prototype demonstration, tiny electrodes were placed 10 millimeters apart, on either side of a chip, and thousands of volts were applied to them. The positive electrode was a wire that ran across the anode side of the chip, while several negatively charged cathode electrodes emitted electrons... Read more...
