In early December, we got a clear look at a completely naked Chevrolet Bolt EV. The vehicle was shown driving around out and and about with no camouflage, much to our amazement. Although the production version of the Bolt differs quite a bit from the concept that bowed at the Detroit Auto Show last year, two things haven’t changed since then: 1) the price and 2) the 200-mile range. "It was less than a year ago that we revealed the Bolt EV concept and promised to deliver a long-range electric vehicle attainable by the masses," said General Motors CEO and Chairman Mary Barra. "The Bolt EV is capable of using the latest mobile app technology to enable car sharing, advanced GPS routing and... Read more...

Computer parts don't have to look geeky or boring. Few companies know this better than LaCie, which has a history of dressing up external storage devices in spiffy digs. Adding to its portfolio of fancy storage devices is its new Chromé, which is not to be confused with anything having to do with Google. The Chromé is a desktop storage accessory that packs a pair of 500 gigabyte M.2 SATA solid state drives in RAID 0. That gives users a total of 1-terabyte of blazing fast storage, and to keep the interface from being a bottleneck, LaCie equipped the Chromé with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port with a Type-C connector. LaCie's decision to use Gen 2 is an important distinction. There's... Read more...
Choosing a laptop usually involves a series of compromises, one of those being power versus portability. On one hand, Ultrabooks offer the convenience of thin and light designs that make toting them around easy, but if you want powerful graphics and gaming performance, a chunky desktop replacement is in order. Or is it? Razer is challenging that notion with its new Blade Stealth laptop and external "Core" graphics accessory. Let's start with the Blade Stealth. This latest model measures a scant 0.52 inches at the waistline and checks in at a mere 2.75 pounds. It's CNC milled out of aircraft grade aluminum for a premium yet solid feel, resulting in a sleek and travel friendly chassis that won't... Read more...
In the popular ultrabook category, being thin and light is a surefire way to garner attention from consumers. Samsung is taking thin and light to the extreme with its 2016-model Notebook 9 Series. The Notebook 9 Series is available in both 13.3-inch and 15-inch varieties, and both use a magnesium alloy chassis to achieve incredibly low weights. In the case of the smaller model, it weighs in at an unheard of 1.85 pounds, which makes it the world’s lightest 13.3-inch notebook according to Samsung. While Samsung swung for the fences with respect to weight, the same cannot be said for the display. You’ll find a 1920x1080 display instead of a WQHD unit, but that may be for the better —... It seems as though Volkswagen would do just about anything to take the public’s mind off its diesel emissions scandal. VW’s popular TDI has taken a huge hit in the United States as a result, and the company is looking to electric vehicles as the future of its “green” push. That change in direction is made readily apparent by the introduction of the BUDD-e concept vehicle at CES, which is seen as a Microbus for the 21st century. You won’t find a TDI or even one of VW’s gasoline engines under the hood the BUDD-e. Instead, you’ll be greeted with a single electric motor under the hood, and another electric motor in the rear of the vehicle nestled below the... Read more...
We cover a lot of high end gear, everything from multi-core processors with boatloads of cache to graphics cards that can run circles around Crysis. But what about the other end of the spectrum? A company called Endless Computers points out that in the developing world, nearly 5 billion people don't have access to a PC. Endless aims to change that with a low cost system that brings the Internet to people who otherwise wouldn't have access to either. Meet the Endless Mini, a $79 sphere-shaped PC. It's built around an ARM Cortex-A5 processor running at 1.5GHz with a Mali-450 GPU. It also has 1GB of RAM and 24GB of solid state storage. Connectivity options consist of three USB 2.0 ports (two on... Read more...
It looks like there’s some big news to discuss with regards to Samsung’s Gear S2 Classic smartwatch. First and foremost, Samsung is adding two more finishes to complement the existing black metal finish: Platinum and Rose Gold. These finishes will be platings on top of the existing stainless steel housing, which should put it more in line with the similar Rose Gold and Gold finishes available on the Apple Watch Sport. In addition to the new two new finishes, Samsung is also introducing a number of new watch bands constructed of leather, steel and even nylon. But perhaps the biggest news to come out of CES pertaining to the Gear S2 (both the standard and Classic models) is that Samsung... Read more...
If you’re a road warrior that likes to carry a lightweight notebook along with you, but would like some extra screen real estate when the need arises, USB-based portable monitors have been around to fill that void. In the past, users have relied on products like the ASUS MB168B+, which weighs just 1.76 pounds, is just 8mm thick, connects via a USB 3.0 port and has a screen resolution of 1920x1080. ASUS has decided to upgrade the MB168B+ and has given it a new name in the process: MB169C+. ASUS says that this is the world’s first 15.6-inch portable monitor to exclusive use a USB-C connector. The USB-C connector is capable of carrying both video and power, which means that you will... Read more...
When Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 4 tablet, the world took notice. In the months since the Surface Pro 4’s release, we’ve seen other manufacturers mimic some of the design and goals of Microsoft’s popular tablet. Although there are similarities among these clones, there are also distinct differences that make them better for different types of users. One of those Windows 10-based tablets is Toshiba’s new 12-inch dynaPad which is designed to give you the feel of writing with pen and paper. In order to deliver a natural handwriting experience that feels like writing with pen on paper, Toshiba bonds two sheets of high-quality glass with a metal mesh sensor. For durability,... BMW first revealed the Spyder version of the i8 plug-in hybrid way back in March 2012. While the coupe version of the i8 is now available for purchase in the United States, we’ve yet to see a production of the Spyder come to life. BMW is at CES this week with another vehicle based on the BMW i8 Concept Spyder: the i Vision Future Interaction Concept. Rather than use that big, convoluted name, I’m just going to refer to the vehicle as the i8 Spyder Concept from here on out. This new i8 Spyder Concept carries over largely the same styling theme as its predecessor, but instead ditches the doors — that’s not exactly practical for production. As we previously speculated, the... Read more...
D-Link is expanding its Connected Home line of products with the addition of the DCH-S165 mydlink Smart Alarm Detector. Devices such as the Smart Alarm Detector make it easy for anyone to have a smart home without the hassle of replacing a bunch of sensors or re-wiring your home. The device plugs into any AC outlet and can be used with other mydlink devices to help protect your home. After plugging in the smart alarm, you’ll need to press the button on the side of the sensor to connect to your... Read more...
Usually when there's talk of Samsung releasing a Galaxy device, the mind wanders to Android, Samsung's go-to platform in the mobile space. Not this time. Samsung is prepping a Windows 10 tablet called the Galaxy TabPro S, and while nothing is yet official, the first press renders of the forthcoming device have been leaked to the web. They come courtesy of Evan Blass, otherwise known as @evleaks on Twitter, and let's just say he has a solid history of leaking legitimate photos and accurate specs to the public before they become official. In this instance, it's just a set of pictures, which show the Galaxy TabPro S in both black and white. The press renders show the tablet with and without a keyboard... Read more...
This is the stuff that dreams are made of. Tesla Motors has dazzled the enthusiast community with its dual-motor Model S P85D, which delivers nearly 700hp of all-wheel drive goodness and rips off 0-60 runs in less than three seconds. However, a new company is entering the fray with an electric supercar concept that could easily blow the doors off a “garden variety” P85D. The Faraday Future FFZero1 is built on a modular Variable Platform Architecture (VPA), which allows the company to produce many types of vehicles with varying wheelbases and tracks. VPA also allows for front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations along with one-, two- or even three-motor powertrain layouts. In... Read more...
