Some are even being sold at a loss to shed supply. Memory bargain hunters, start your engines.Some wholesale flash prices tumbled 22% in the first quarter from the previous quarter, Semico Research says.That's bad news for companies that manufacture flash, including Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix (formerly a division of Hyundai). There's a big dust-up today over the latest Google Toolbar beta. However, it's not like the "feature" was a secret. More on this later.According to reports at DigitalPoint forums, the latest beta release of Google Toolbar hijacks 404 pages as shown in the image above.It’s not clear from the reports as to whether this occurs only when no customized 404 page is available on a specific site, or with every 404 page. I also can’t test the theory, least the only beta version of Google Toolbar I could find was for Internet Explorer.A little research by the writer would have shown this "feature" was unveiled in a Google post in December - and it only affects non-customized 404 pages.  A big bruhaha... Volume shipments of AMD's Barcelona will be delayed until 2008 because of a bug (what else).  AMD definitely didn't need more bad news.Barcelona, AMD's first quad-core processor for servers, is shipping to some customers in the high-performance computing market. But the company had hoped to start shipping it to a wider variety of customers this month, as well as introduce a faster model that could better compete with Intel's latest Penryn chips.Unfortunately for AMD, that's going to have to wait, according to a company spokesman.   Seagate was surprisingly late to join the small, but elite club of storage manufacturers shipping one terabyte (1TB) class hard drives. Somewhat expectedly, the first out of the gate was Hitachi, who made it to market several months beforehand with a high-density five-platter 1TB hard disk design. While Hitachi’s performance, thermals, and acoustics have all been tested to be fairly solid overall, many high-end buyers have been waiting for other large manufacturers, namely Western Digital and Seagate, to get into the game to see how these other products compare. It has been quite a while since AMD launched a truly new CPU core architecture.  It was way back in September of 2003 that the first "K8" based desktop processors arrived in the form of the single-core Athlon 64 and Athlon 64-FX.  And while the company has launched a slew of new desktop, server, and mobile processors since then, there haven’t been any major changes made to the base CPU architecture.   AMD did make some modifications to the execution core as they introduced processors for different sockets or with different L2 cache sizes, but overall the architecture remained largely unchanged. It seems that we are learning a little more about AMD’s upcoming Barcelona cores week after week as the launch date nears. A couple of days ago we learned that Barcelona will be launched on September 10. Today we learned that Barcelona’s full power-saving features will not function unless users get a new BIOS update and a supported motherboard. The National Science Foundation is prepared to award IBM with a contract to construct the world’s fastest supercomputer the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The machine cost $200 million to construct and could cost over $400 million during its five-year lifespan. Designated as the “super” supercomputer, it will be the first to break the petaflop barrier, capable of one thousand trillion mathematical calculations per second. It’s intended use will be for Grand Challenge science projects, such as simulating the effects of global warming. The gang at The Inquirer has aquired some new information regarding AMD's upcoming native, Quad-Core processor, dubbed Barcelona.  They've got a number of synthetic benchmark results that paint a very good picture of Barcelona's performance, should they turn out to be correct... "These performance numbers were based on systems using the Opteron 2356, or known to the world of us regular folks as AMD Quad Core at 2.3GHz. The price of this processor is currently set at $796 USD in quantities of 1000, so we'll see what can Clovertown at 2.66 GHz (Xeon 5355) do about it… So, what will Barcelona deliver?
