Another Apple iPhone launch event has come and gone, with the company's latest flagship and mid-range phones already shipping to customers, arriving on front porches just a few short days ago. In a second consecutive year of component shortages, Apple's deep resources and influence seemed to mitigate any potential issues securing chip fab space, which means there's plenty of iPhone supply to go around. This year's devices bring a mix of needed catch-up features, improvements and interesting bonuses that are designed to set the company's smartphones apart from its Android-bearing rivals.  Despite that, it kind of feels like some of the magic has worn off. These days it's easy to get... Read more...
Apple this week unveiled its iPhone 13 lineup (among other products) powered by its new A15 Bionic processor, and will open up preorders tomorrow. Then it will be another week before the latest iPhone handsets ship out. While we wait for official benchmarks to arrive, a handful of leaked benchmarks suggest the A15 Bionic is a worthy upgrade to the A14 Bionic. The A15 Bionic is built on TSMC's advanced 5-nanometer node. Because of the need for Face ID hardware, ambient light sensor, FaceTime HD camera, and earpiece speaker, the notch won't completely disappear. This is an interesting turn of events as Android manufacturers were quick to copy the iPhone X display notch after it was released. But these same OEMs just as quickly pivoted to hole punch cutouts for the selfie camera... Read more...
Apple made the significant shift to 5G wireless with its iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro product families in late 2020. The rumor mill is still churning up fresh fodder on the incoming iPhone 13/iPhone 13 Pro successors with two new incoming features. The latest salvo comes from Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives, who claims that all iPhone 13 models will come with LiDAR. In today's current-generation smartphones, only the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max get LiDAR. LiDAR can be used for augmented reality applications and enhancing photography (it can enable faster focusing in low-light conditions). LiDAR can also be used to improve portrait shots taken at night. Apple is looking to democratize LiDAR... Read more...
