We’re accustomed to hearing reasons why one cellular carrier is better than another, but now, Sprint has even more of a reason to brag. According to a 3G comparison test conducted by PC World, Sprint has the most reliable network, beating out Verizon and AT&T in 13 cities examined by the magazine. This test is good news for Sprint and backs up the company’s claim of having the “most dependable 3G network.” PC World conducted the tests in March and April in 13 major markets around the country. Cities included in the test were Boston, Baltimore, New York, Orlando, Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, and San Jose. Testers measured download speeds,... Read more...
We're not entirely sure if this is the mythical "quadruple play" bundle that cable companies had in mind, but whatever the case, it works for Comcast. With mobile broadband usage on the rise and pay-TV seeming less and less potent with the introduction of Hulu and the like, Comcast is making sure to grasp as many revenue generating businesses as it can. Starting this week in Portland, Oregon, Comcast will kick off its High-Speed 2go service, a data-only 4G service that will be bundled with its at-home Internet, phone and television products. In other words, Comcast is hoping to become a one-stop shop for in-home TV, in-home phone, in-home Internet and on-the-go Internet. It has yet to add voice... Read more...
On Sprint’s Facebook page, we find a new ad that is directed at 1st generation iPhone users. The ad brings to light the fact that the new Palm Pre can run multiple applications at the same time and can save users up to $1,200 over two years compared to the iPhone. The ad also suggests that since many 1st generation iPhone users are just getting out of their contracts, now is the perfect time to make the switch to Sprint and the Palm Pre. Sprint’s new and upcoming 4G network, the first of its kind from a national carrier, is also used as a compelling feature to try to convince users to make the switch. As Sprint explains below the ad, “You can have a mighty fancy phone, but it’s only as good as... So, what do you do when legions of iPhone users continue to suck down massive quantities of mobile data? If you're AT&T, you promise an even faster route to do so. This week, America's exclusive iPhone carrier has just announced that it will be upgrading its 3G network and readying it to deliver "considerably faster mobile broadband speeds." Starting later this year and continuing into 2011, the network upgrades -- which will integrate High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology -- will enable it to deliver even faster speeds to smartphones and LaptopConnect users. In a rather impressive announcement, we're told that AT&T has attracted "more than twice the number of smartphone users... Clearwire and Cisco have formed an alliance to expand WiMAX services throughout the U.S. and offer additional devices that will work with the WiMAX standard. Under the terms of the partnership, Cisco will provide the network backbone for Clearwire’s national WiMAX network. In addition, Cisco will build new mobile devices that are compatible with Clearwire’s Clear 4G mobile WiMAX service. As you know, WiMAX provides wireless broadband Internet at speeds much faster than today’s 3G networks. Sprint and Clearwire combined their WiMAX assets in November; the new company is called Clearwire. Sprint is the majority owner of Clearwire with 51%. Clearwire currently offers WiMAX services in Baltimore... Read more...
We've seen Acer demonstrate a few of its notebooks with WiMAX modules built in, so it's no real surprise to hear that this very company has decided to join the Open Patent Alliance (OPA), a group dedicated to offering intellectual property rights (IPR) solutions that support the development and widespread adoption of WiMAX. In fact, Acer has become the very first global PC OEM board member, and we're told that it will help the proliferation of WiMAX technology, devices and applications around the world. If you'll recall, the OPA was originally formed in June of 2008 by the likes of Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Cisco, Clearwire, Huawei Technologies, Intel Corporation, and Samsung Electronics, and... Now that AT&T is taking on iPhone 3G customers by the truckload, not to mention its endeavor to sell all sorts of data-using netbooks, it only makes sense to push some of that subscriber revenue back into the network. Recent reports are suggesting that the nation's largest GSM carrier is looking to double the capacity of its high-speed mobile broadband network "in order to accommodate a slate of new data-heavy devices that may include a new iPhone from Apple."Beyond that little 'new iPhone' hint -- which should come as no shock to anyone who realizes that WWDC is just weeks away -- we're told that AT&T's network could soon support 7.2Mbps download speeds. Currently, the 3G network tops... Read more...
WiMAX has definitely had a difficult time taking off here in the US, but with Sprint hoping to expand the service to around a dozen major metropolitan areas before the dawn of 2011, there's still hope for a late surge in adoption. And honestly, it's devices like this that'll make it happen. Clearwire has just announced an interesting new product that could eventually make you think twice about ditching your current ISP and going strictly WiMAX: the CLEAR Spot. Put simply, this is a portable WiMAX modem with built-in Wi-Fi capability, meaning that it can deliver WiMAX signals to multiple Wi-Fi-enabled products.Think of it this way -- you fire up the CLEAR Spot and secure a blazing fast... Sprint could definitely use a boost these days, and it's apparently hoping to get that from upcoming expansion of its Sprint 4G services. For those who haven't followed this epic sequence of events, Sprint 4G is the new tagline for its WiMAX services, which went by "XOHM" for, oh, a day or two. After linking up with Clearwire, however, it ditched the inexplicable moniker and went with something entirely more digestible -- and now, the circle of explanation is complete. At any rate, Sprint 4G is currently only available in around Baltimore, Maryland, which obviously won't put a huge increase in the revenue line. By the time 2009 draws to a close, however, that situation will be drastically different.... Read more...
TheStreet.com reports that Nokia and Verizon are setting aside their differences and have come together to create a touchscreen device for the upcoming 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. While AT&T and Apple may enjoy success today with the iPhone, the two companies are looking towards the future and are determined to lead the next generation of wireless technology by putting their talents together. People familiar with the companies say the partnership is likely to be exclusive. Although a Nokia spokesperson denied that the company had entered into an exclusive deal with Verizon, he didn’t deny that the companies were working together. If these reports are true, the pact between the companies... Read more...
Intel seemed pretty jovial when it locked itself into a WiMAX-based future with a smattering of partners last year, and despite everything that has happened in the industry (and the economy) since, the company is still pretty elated about the whole deal. Publicly, at least. After talking up its 32 nanometer processing technology this week, the company also fielded some questions in relation to its ties to Clearwire. As you may or may not know, Clearwire -- a WiMAX Internet provider -- is only active in Portland, Oregon and Baltimore, Maryland at the moment, and it doesn't take a financial expert to realize that two metropolitan areas isn't enough to prop up an entire ISP. On top of that, LTE... Read more...
