NVIDIA Mobile GeForce GTX 10-Series Review: Pascal Notebooks Slay Benchmarks

Steam VR Performance, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light

The Steam VR Performance Test measures a system's performance using a 2-minute sequence from Valve’s Aperture Robot Repair VR demo. After running the test, it determines whether your system is capable of properly running VR content at 90Hz and whether or not the visual fidelity can be increased to the recommended level for a given application. Both a system’s CPU and GPU are factored into the score.

Any score above 6 in this benchmark means the GPU is considered "VR Ready" by Valve and HTC, and 11 is the maximum score. The mobile GeForce GTX 1070 comes close to maxing out the benchmark, while the GTX 1060 lands firmly in VR Ready territory and well ahead of the GTX 970M.

DX11 Gaming Performance
Based on Epic’s Unreal Engine 3, BioShock Infinite takes you (as former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt) to the mysterious, flying city of Columbia. You find yourself helping Elizabeth, who soon turns out to have unusual powers. The game offers a first person shooter (FPS) style view, but the story-line is as compelling as the battles, and Bioshock infinite has won awards and praise for its story and art design.

BioShock Infinite isn't very taxing of modern hardware, but these results are interesting nonetheless. Once again -- as expected -- the mobile GeForce GTX 1070 rules the roost. And the GeForce GTX 1060 drops in next in line. What's most interesting is that the mobile GeForce GTX 1060 actually outruns an Alienware machine that's connected to an external Graphics AMP with a DESKTOP GeForce GTX 980 inside.

Metro Last Light
GPU-Crushing DirectX 11 Benchmarking
Metro Last Light is an excellent post-apocalyptic game with excellent 3D visuals. Metro makes use of advanced depth of field effects and character model tessellation for increased realism. This title also supports NVIDIA PhysX technology for impressive in-game physics effects. We tested the game with its in-game image quality options set to their High Quality mode, with DOF effects disabled.

We saw more of the same in Metro Last Light. The Asus notebook with the GeForce GTX 1070 inside crushes everything else, followed by MSI's GeForce GTX 1060-equipped machine. The MSI notebook was able to outrun the Alienware system with the Graphics AMP in this test as well.
