Grand Theft Auto VI could have PS5 owners scrambling for a storage upgrade - Image: Rockstar Games
Before you go on bank heists and hijack vehicles in Grand Theft Auto VI, you may want to shop for a solid state drive (SSD), as the upcoming blockbuster is tipped to devour 210 gigabytes of storage space. Depending on which PlayStation model you own, that could amount to around a third of the total available storage that's left after the OS claims its share, and that's assuming you don't have anything else installed.
The 210GB figure is quoted as being the download size for the Standard Edition. Unpacking the file during installation and/or the Ultimate Edition could add more bulk and potentially force gamers to uninstall other games or apps on their console to make room for the upcoming title.

- 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞 : 210 GB
- 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝 ($79.99)
Pre-Load : November 12
Release : November 19

While not confirmed by Rockstar Games, the user who posted the download figure on X, PlayStation Game Size (@PlaystationSize), has a positive reputation for this sort of thing, with over 91,200 followers on the platform since joining in 2020.
What does this mean for PlayStation 5 owners? Here is the breakdown of how much usable space each model features:
Original PlayStation 5 (2020, disc or digital) w/ 825GB SSD: ~667GB
PlayStation 5 Slim (disc or digital) w/ 1TB SSD: ~848GB
PlayStation 5 Slim Digital (2025 revision) w/ 825GB SSD: ~667GB
PlayStation 5 Pro w/ 2TB SSD: ~1.89TB
Fortunately, it's super easy to upgrade the storage on a PS5 console. We posted a how-to guide on the process, whereby we installed a 2TB Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus. Unfortunately, storage prices have spiked in the era of rapid AI factory buildouts, so it's no longer an economical upgrade, though it might still be a necessary one.

Sony also outlines storage upgrade steps in a support document, which can vary slightly by model. You'll want to make sure you select an SSD that meets Sony's requirements. You can see what's required in the table above, but to the point, the PS5 can accommodate SSDs ranging in capacity from 250GB to 8TB and in a variety of form factors, so long as they meet the speed (5,500MB/s or faster sequential reads) and physical size requirements.
SSD Upgrade Options For Your PS5
Here are a few 1TB options that will give you some breathing room:
Even though the Crucial P310 comes with a chunkier heatsink, it is still listed as being fully compatible with the PS5.
For a 2TB SSD, you're looking at around $330-ish and up for a name brand model, like Lexar's 2TB NM790 listed for $334.99 on Amazon or Crucial's 2TB P310 with heatsink for $327.99. You can go a little cheaper with an off-brand model, but we recommend sticking with reputable manufacturers.
What about Xbox console owners? There is no download size mentioned, but we imagine it will be similar. Upgrading the internal SSD on an Xbox Series X|S is much more of a process and far riskier because of the teardown involved (see iFixit's guide), but technically possible. The safer route is to shop for Storage Expansion Card, though the cost is all over the place. That said, we found Seagate's 2TB Storage Expansion Card going for $299 at Walmart. The other option is to get a USB drive like Seagate's 2TB Game Drive ($139.99 at Best Buy). You can't play games off a Game Drive, but you can move your games over to free up space on your console.
