For almost as long as video games have been around, players have wanted the ability to play against each other no matter what platform they are on. Xbox players want to fight PC gamers and PS4 gamers and vice versa. The catch is that Sony isn’t into cross-platform action. Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan, who is also the VP of Blizzard Entertainment, has let slip that Overwatch players might gain the ability to share progress between game consoles and PCs. Kaplan said in an interview recently that his team has "frequent and ongoing discussions about" adding that feature. Kaplan also noted... Read more...
When it comes to gaming today, many people get their fix via a console of some sort (i.e. an Xbox One or PlayStation 4). However, there are gaming services are out there that are capable of streaming games directly without the need for expensive, high-end hardware sitting in your entertainment center. Microsoft apparently thinks that cloud gaming is the future to the extent that the company has announced an entirely new cloud gaming division. Microsoft has been signaling for a while that it intended to bet big on cloud gaming with acquisitions of Havok back in 2015, Simplygon in 2017, and PlayFab... Read more...
The gaming industry has been doing quite well in recent months, with much of that strong performance coming thanks to the Nintendo Switch which is still dominating sales. The NPD Group keeps track of the industry and according to its numbers, hardware sales doubled year-over-year for January. While Nintendo might have the hottest console out there right now, NPD says that Sony and Microsoft also benefitted from the boom in hardware spending. "Hardware spending in January 2018 grew 119 percent when compared to a year ago, to $278 million," NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. "Spending gains were driven... Read more...
One of the coolest things that gamers saw during CES 2018 was the original Xbox controller, known as "Duke", in the Hyperkin booth. The giant controller is making a comeback and you will be able to buy one at the end of March to scratch that retro gaming itch in your geek hands. Hyperkin says that the controller will sell for $69.99, which is more expensive than most Xbox controllers. The giant Duke controller was replaced early in the Xbox lifecycle with the Xbox S controller during the first generation of the original Xbox. Word is that while the Hyperkin controller looks like the original Duke... Read more...
This has been a big year for game console sales and much of the growth and success in the segment can be placed directly at Nintendo's feet. Nintendo has two smash hit consoles on its hands this year with the Switch and the SNES Classic Edition both being hard-to-find and selling like hotcakes. The latest numbers are in from NPD and overall sales are up 10% year-over-year for October alone. Nintendo isn’t the only company selling a boatload of consoles this year; sales for the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, SNES Classic Edition, and 3DS combined for $238 million in spending for October. "Year to date,... Read more...
The splash that PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds on the gaming community has made has been incredible. The game so far has only been offered on Steam for PC gamers and isn’t even out of its early access form yet. But that hasn't stopped the title from already setting records for the highest concurrent player count, hitting 2.3 million concurrent users last month. On the other hand, PC gamers haven't all been happy to hear that PUBG is heading to consoles because they want their game fixed and flawless first. Yesterday, it was announced that PUBG is coming to Xbox One with a launch date of... Read more...
Evidence recently started mounting that something interesting was afoot in Fortnight, a game developed by Epic Games that is available for both Xbox One and PS4. The first indications of cross-play between the Xbox One and PS4 for this particular title came when PS4 gamers noted that there were players running around in their games that had spaces in their online usernames. The PS4 doesn't allow spaces in usernames, only underscores or other characters. A bit of sleuthing by some of those users turned up the same exact players and usernames active on the Xbox One version of the game. More definitive... Read more...
Are you a bigger fan of the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One? If recent hints are anything to go by, the gap between the two should be fairly large. The PlayStation 4 is reportedly outselling the Xbox One by a 2-to-1 ratio. Microsoft stopped reporting the number of Xbox One sales quite a while ago, so where then did the most recent numbers come from? A SuperData report about the Nintendo Switch offhandedly mentioned that there are currently 26 million Xbox One installed base units and 55 million PS4 units. These numbers were further confirmed by Daniel Ahmad, a digital games analyst for Niko China.... Read more...

Late last week, a teaser trailer for Street Fighter 5 found its way onto the Internet. One curious takeaway from the trailer was the game would be an exclusive for the PlayStation 4 on consoles (it’s also coming to the PC). Fighting fans that also happen to be Xbox One owners were clearly dismayed with the exclusivity agreement, so fans naturally took to Twitter to get some answers from Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox Division Head. When questioned about the Street Fighter 5 snub, Spencer responded honestly, stating, “Business deals happen. We won't do all of them. When we have a 1st party... Read more...
Back in March we posted an article about GTA V and said that one of these days we’d post a piece stating that the title is finally available for the PC. Well, today is that day. Rockstar posted the news that Grand Theft Auto V is indeed coming to the PC, this fall. It’s also going to be available on Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-gen Xbox One and PS4 consoles. “Grand Theft Auto V will take full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with across-the-board graphical and technical improvements to deliver a stunning new level of detail,” reads... Among places to not feel safe, the foothills of the Himalayas, in a bus with a monkey, at a checkpoint manned by rifle-wielding militiamen, with a psycho in a helicopter coming in for a landing, would be close to the top of the list. Yet that is exactly where we find ourselves in the 5-minute trailer for Far Cry 4, a game that takes place in the wild environs of the mountains. Ubisoft unveiled the trailer at E3, and it’s captivating. And brutal. Do yourself a favor and check it out. (Warning: NSFW. Mountain despots tend to use strong language.) If that doesn’t get your blood pumping,... Read more...
Twitch is a popular platform for watching and sharing video game footage, seeing top-notch players broadcasting their thing, enjoying special events, and more--and now it’s the property of Google, via YouTube. According to Variety, YouTube acquired Twitch for a cool billion dollars. The deal is reportedly an all-cash offer and will be announced shortly. Twitch says that it has over 45 million visitors per month. It was just in February that Microsoft announced that it would finally add Twitch livestreaming to the Xbox One, which we pontificated would bring about new features. We were partially... It turns out the scuttlebutt from back in March is true: Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 4 is coming this November for consoles and PCs. It will be out on November 18th in the U.S. and November 20th in EMEA, and it will be available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows PCs. “Pack away your tropical gear, because Far Cry 4 is heading to the Himalayas,” wrote Ubisoft’s Gary Steinman in a blog post. “Taking a sharp turn away from the lush island jungles of the top-rated Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 is set in Kyrat, an untamed region currently ruled by a despotic self-appointed...
