It seems that Intel's forthcoming, low-power Atom processor is popping up all over the news lately. First we got wind of Gigabyte's portable Atom device a few weeks ago--what we thought was an ultraportable named the M912 is really a MID (Mobile Internet Device) called the M528. Now we're hearing about another Atom-based device seen in the wild: the Fujitsu LifeBook U2010 UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC). Also yesterday, rumor of an Atom-powered Asus Eee PC surfaced to counter the rumor from the day before about an Atom-based competitor to the Eee PC from MSI. If that's not enough for you, yesterday, CNET Germany reported that a German Intel executive "confirmed that Apple plans to use Intel's... Read more...
While some reports seem to point to NBC returning to iTunes, that seems unlikely, as the Zune Marketplace, along with the changes to the Zune 2.5 software, has added NBC to the fold.Notable in the deal is NBC Universal's inclusion, as the company's programs disappeared from Apple's iTunes Store in December following disputes over pricing and bundling. "Partnering with Zune will allow us to develop innovative content offerings for their customers, including flexible pricing and packaging options beginning this fall," said JB Perrette, president of NBC Universal Digital Distribution. NBC Universal will offer NBC's "The Office," "Heroes" and "30 Rock." Also on offer will be programming from Viacom's... Read more...
NetApplications.com's Market Share reports a large spike in the percentage of Windows users using Apples' Safari browser for the months of March and April. They theorize that this signifiant spike is a direct result of Apple's sneaky approach of getting Windows users to unwittingly install Safari 3.1 and have it automatically set as the default browser:"On March 18th, Apple released the Safari 3.1 web browser for Windows and the Mac. With the release, Apple also included Safari 3.1 with Apple's Software Update service on Windows. It was labeled as an update with the option to install pre-selected. The update has been pushed to millions of Windows users of Apple's other software products, like... Read more...
Oh, oh.  Stop downloading.  Although it appeared that Windows XP SP3 was set to go, we may have jumped the gun there. The software maker said there is a "compatibility issue" between the XP service pack and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, a retail chain management program for small and midsize businesses."In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center," the company said in a statement. Naturally, if you don't have RMS, you're good to go.  But aside from the links in our earlier story, and other sites, you won't be able - at least for now - to be able... Read more...
We know that Microsoft has set June 30th as the drop-dead date for Windows XP (despite their statements yesterday). Despite the fact that after June 30th, manufacturers such as Dell are not allowed to ship PCs with XP pre-installed, Dell has come up with an "escape clause."Dell will take advantage of a licensing option in Vista Business and Vista Ultimate that lets PC makers provide XP under the Vista license, which Microsoft calls a "downgrade" license. (Enterprises with site licenses have these same rights with any version of Vista.) In essence, the user is buying a Vista license that it can apply to XP, and Microsoft can still claim a Vista sale.Dell will preinstall XP Professional as a "downgrade"... Read more...
Just in time for the imminent release of the Windows XP SP3 update, VMware has released an update to its Mac-based Fusion virtulization application, with full support for SP3 Boot Camp partitions. The Fusion 1.1.2 update also includes a number of bug fixes as well as improved support for the MacBook Air--solving a few issues Fusion had with the Air's virtual disc and its Superdrive.Perhaps the most imporant aspect to the Fusison 1.1.2 update, however, is the ability to back up virtual machines with Time Machine:"Prior versions of VMware Fusion automatically excluded virtual machines from Time Machine backups to avoid hitting a Mac OS X-related crash when backing up running virtual machines.Apple... As hard as it may be to believe, Windows XP SP3 has finally shipped to manufacturing.  Users will be able to download it on 4/29.Keroack confirmed that date today. "We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the Web on April 29, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center," he said.Users will be able to update their XP systems to SP3 starting next week, but they will have to select the optional download in Windows Update or download a much larger, stand-alone installer from the Microsoft site. Using an old browser?  If you're planning to use PayPal, you might consider updating.PayPal, one of the brands most spoofed in phishing attacks, is working on a plan to block its users from making transactions from Web browsers that don't provide anti-phishing protection. The eBay-owned company, which runs a Web-based payment system that allows the transfer of funds between bank accounts and credit cards, said browsers that do not have support for blocking identity theft-related Web sites or for EV SSL (Extended Validation Secure Sockets Layer) certificates are considered "unsafe" for financial transactions.Honestly, although some may consider PayPal's "threat" draconian, it's in your own... Russell Beattie had an interesting idea. He observed the fascination that other countries had for using their smartphones and other mobile devices to browse the Web. He started mowser and tried to put the big Web onto the small screen in your pocket. Yesterday he announced that he's giving up the effort, and offers a cautionary opinion to others that might try developing the same market: forget it. In other words, I think anyone currently developing sites using XHTML-MP markup, no Javascript, geared towards cellular connections and two inch screens are simply wasting their time, and I'm tired of wasting my time. The argument up to now has been simply that there are roughly 3 billion phones out... The end may be near for Windows as we know it, according to research firm Gartner:"Because Microsoft Windows is so large and complex, covering 20 years of legacy code, it can no longer adequately respond to market forces, and Windows needs to be securely redesigned, said Gartner analysts Michael Silver and Neil MacDonald. They delivered the news at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2008 in Las Vegas this week."We’re not entirely sure that this is the case just yet, but we could certainly see the argument for this happening eventually.  So the question then would be, what will have to happen? Will MS eventually write a whole new version of Windows and include some legacy support via emulation, much... When we recently updated you on the release date for Vista’s successor, currently known as 7, we were a bit skeptical that the ‘slip’ Mr. Gates made was concerning a retail or RTM version. "It seems that Microsoft is getting the word out that Mr. Gates was indeed referring to some sort of pre-release beta program: “Microsoft wants to chill everyone out with the somber news that its got no plans to introduce Windows 7 any earlier than January 2010 (three years from the launch of Vista)...” Considering how many times this release date has changed, we don’t expect this to be the final word on the subject.... Here's a way to peruse the globe while getting regional updates.New York Times "placemarks" will appear on maps where there's relevant news, and showing the New York Times layer in the software will show a window with a month's worth of headlines, Google's LatLong blog said.Google spokeswoman Kate Hurowitz said the company is open to partnerships with other media outlets and that extending such a feature to Google Maps--a much more widely used service than the Google Earth software--"would be a logical progression," though the company has nothing to announce right now. Google's interest in extending this to Google Maps is not only natural, it's a lot more exciting.  Naturally if you want... Read more...
The rumored release date of the successor to Vista, dubbed Windows 7, has typically bounced between 2010 and 2011 until Bill Gates let the following slip:In response to a question about Windows Vista, Gates, speaking before the Inter-American Development Bank here, said: "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version." Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."Mr. Gates was not exactly clear on whether he meant another milestone version such as the one that key Microsoft partners allegedly received recently or something like a beta or candidate release version.... Apple and Adobe have had a fairly cozy relationship over the years, a few misunderstanding not withstanding. We can’t help but wonder how we’d define their relationship in a year or so when Adobe is shipping 64-bit applications for the Windows platform while OS X users have nothing but 32-bit options. When Mac users begin complaining, they’ll really only have to look to Apple to find the source of their problem."At the WWDC show last June, however, Adobe & other developers learned that Apple had decided to stop their Carbon 64 efforts. This means that 64-bit Mac apps need to be written to use Cocoa (as Lightroom is) instead of Carbon," he explained. "This means that we'll need to rewrite... Read more...
You had to see this coming (and it was rumored, too), with the popularity of low-cost ultra-portable laptops such as the Asus Eee PC, the OLPC, and the Classmate. Microsoft has given Windows XP another reprieve, but only for a class of devices they call ULCPCs or Ultra-Low-Cost PCs.Microsoft said on Thursday that it will continue to allow Windows XP Home edition to be sold for a class of computers it calls "ultra-low-cost PCs." It's a category that covers machines with slower processors, smaller screens, and in many cases flash memory for storage, rather than a traditional hard drive.Microsoft will give PC makers the option of using Windows XP or Vista on ULCPC devices, said Michael Dix, general... We're always on the lookout for Asus Eee PC updates and today we've come up with some breaking news for you relative to the Windows XP variant that is due to hit the market in April.  Actually, it's more than just some breaking news; we've got one.  Though the machine isn't due out until sometime in the next few weeks, we were able to get our hands on a full retail bundle well before they hit store shelves in the US.  The included operating system, software and add-in bundle is really the only thing that differentiates this Eee PC version, versus the Linux-based 4G model that we looked at for you back in November 2007.  Let's take a... Windows Vista didn't have an easy launch, and as a result Microsoft and their partners had to prolong the life of Windows XP until June of this year in an attempt to keep system builders and their customers happy.  One line of reasoning behind this was that Vista would have all of its kinks ironed out by June of this year, and for the most part that task seems to have already been accomplished.  But yet XP looks like it's still not ready to retire, and the reasons for it are somewhat surprising and unexpected:“The biggest area where XP is likely to stick around is in the nascent but growing market of low-cost, flash memory-based notebook computers, such as the Asus Eee PC. These devices... Read more...

Can't get market share the good old-fashioned way?  How about sneaking your browser onto systems, then? With the release of Safari 3.1 on Tuesday, Apple started giving Windows users the option of downloading Safari via the Apple Software Update pop-up."Safari for Windows is the fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for the PC. It displays web pages faster than any other browser and is filled with innovative features -- all delivered in an efficient and elegant user interface," states Apple's message in the pop-up screen. Tsk, tsk.  The browser that's really starting to take market share from Internet Explorer is Firefox, which, according to Net Applications, now has 17.3% vs. 74.9%... Read more...
