We all know that solid state storage is the sexy option these days, but a lower cost per gigabyte and higher overall capacities have kept mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) from becoming irrelevant or otherwise obsolete, especially in datacenter environments. It's no surprise, then, that Western Digital continues to devote time and resources into HDDs. The company's newest product is its WD Se family, a line of enterprise-class HDDs that are best suited for bulk cloud storage, small-to-medium business (SMB) environments, high-end NAS applications, replicated environments, archiving, and other backup-heavy scenarios. These 3.5-inch drives ship in 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB capacities, each one with a 7,200... Read more...
In a way, it's a wonder that Dropbox is still an independent company. But as long as it is, it might as well bulk up on partnerships. Western Digital is the latest friend, with WD SmartWare Pro launching with Dropbox integration. It's a new software tool that enables users to back up files to any USB external HDD or to the cloud using their Dropbox. Additionally, in the event that a file is deleted, lost, or a previous version of a file is needed, WD SmartWare Pro makes it easy to quickly restore and retrieve backed-up data. Hybrid hard drives featuring mechanical platters supplemented by a chunk of speedy solid state storage for fast access to the most frequently accessed programs seem to be where the market is headed, and Western Digital has no intention of being left behind. In fact, WD claims it's now sampling the thinnest 2.5-inch hybrid hard drive the world has ever seen. WD's drive measures a scant 5mm thin and is slim enough to squeeze into today's slimmest notebooks, like Ultrabooks (Intel) and ultrathins (AMD). According to WD, the new drives have a footprint that's nearly 50 percent smaller than traditional 2.5-inch drives. "Mobile devices are becoming smaller, thinner, lighter and more responsive," said... Read more...
Quick! What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Western Digital? If you're like most people, you immediately thought of hard drives and other storage products, which have been WD's bread and butter for several decades now. But the times, they are a changin', and in case you haven't noticed, Western Digital is no longer content to simply take residence in your PC. That became evident when Western Digital dove into the media player market with its WD TV line-up of set-top boxes, but why stop at owning the living room when you can lord over the entire manor? Unable to come up with a viable answer to that question, Western Digital decided to do just that by launching its very... Read more...

There's no denying that solid state drives (SSDs) are the sexy storage option, offering the luxury of blazing fast read and write transfers along with the reliability that comes from having no moving parts. But they're also comparatively expensive to mechanical hard drives, and typically smaller in capacity, too. So where does that leave HDDs? For many, it's still the primary storage option, while even SSD adopters view them as viable secondary storage devices. In other words, HDDs still have their place, and unfortunately, it doesn't appear that today's still-inflated prices will fall to pre-flood levels before next year. That's the word from Western Digital, which says that lingering bills... Read more...
According to IHS iSuppli, the SSD market will continue to boom this year, thanks to the rapid rise of so-called cache drives. These drives -- we reviewed a 60GB example from Corsair last month -- are popular with OEMs because they pair a small amount of NAND flash with a traditional hard drive. We aren't surprised to see cache drives taking off in desktops, but their popularity in notebooks is a little harder to parse -- particularly when you consider that Hybrid Hard Drives, like Seagate's Momentus XT, have been on the market for several years. While Seagate's HHDs aren't necessarily as fast as a cache drive + HDD combo, OEMs tend to favor solutions that allow them to integrate functionality.... Read more...

Although solid state drives have generated the lion’s share of buzz in the storage space these last few years, traditional hard drives with spinning media continue to be a mainstay of the industry and have evolved to offer higher capacities and more performance than ever before. Of course, even the fastest of today’s hard drives can’t compete with solid state drives in terms of peak transfer speeds and especially access times, but the release of the new WD VelociRaptor we’ll be showing you here today helps close the gap just a bit... Right now, the "industry standard" for a laptop hard drive is 9.5mm. Some of the largest desktop replacements can use drives a few millimeters higher than that. But soon, 7mm may be the go-to size, as Ultrabooks become the norm and mobile becomes...more mobile. Today, Western Digital introduced a new 7.5mm 2.5" HDD in the Scorpio Blue family. It's said to be the 2.5" drive with the lowest power consumption on the market today. Specified to a best-in-class 400Gs shock tolerance, the new single-platter WD Scorpio Blue small form factor hard drives are available in 500 GB and 320 GB capacities and the drives' compatibility with industry-standard 9.5 mm slots make them ideal storage options for mainstream... Toshiba and Western Digital announced a deal today in which the two companies will essentially swap some manufacturing equipment with each other -- though which is getting the better deal is debateable. Western Digital has agreed to sell Toshiba certain assets related to the production of 3.5" hard drives "to address the requirements of the regulatory agencies that have conditionally approved or are continuing to review the company's planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST)." Translation: We really want to buy Hitachi, so we're giving Toshiba a deal." As part of that deal, WD has agreed to buy Toshiba Storage Device (Thailand). The key word in that sentence is "Thailand;"... Read more...

Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Western Digital is dropping the distribution warranty period for Caviar Blue, Caviar Green, and Scorpio Blue drives from 3 years to 2 years (Caviar Black and Scorpio Black will still carry 5-year warranties). News of Western Digital's reduced warranty terms was first reported by The Register, which got its hands on the following letter: This new warranty policy will be effective for drives shipped from January 2nd, 2012. It is important that you take a moment to update your website(s) and collateral to reflect this change for effected... Read more...

Multiple motherboard manufacturers are warning that precipitously rising HDD prices will impact their sales. Gigabyte has issued guidance that it now expects Q4 shipments to fall by 20 -25 percent, while Asustek predicts a much smaller decline of ~five percent. Analysts believe Asus is underestimating the impact of the price increases, and think the company's sales could fall as much as ten percent. This would be in line with guidance from MSI, ECS, and Asrock. Exposure to the shortage will vary depending on the degree to which a manufacturer relies on retail sales and the price points of their various products. The impact on budget boards in the retail channel, for example, is likely to be catastrophic.... Read more...
Both analysts and Apple are warning that the price of hard drives, which has already been creeping upwards the past few weeks, could jump significantly in Q4 due to catastrophic floods taking place in Thailand. During Apple's conference call this week, CEO Tim Cook said: ""Like many others, we source many components from Thailand and have multiple factories that supply these components. There are several factories that are currently not operable, and the recovery timeline for these factories is not known at this point... We would say that our primary exposure is on the Mac...I'm virtually certain there will be an overall industry shortage of disk drives as a result of the disaster." Industry... Read more...
