Dell's Alienware Steam Machine is under the microscope today. In partnership with several leading PC makers, Valve has finally taken their often-talked about Steam Machine with custom SteamOS to market, promising the depth and precision of PC gaming driven by a purpose-built operating system, that offers a standardized platform similar to a tried and true "just push play" console gaming experience. The Alienware Steam Machine seems like just the thing for PC gamers looking for a simpler way to game without a lot of fuss and configuration. What’s a Steam Machine, you ask? The Steam Machine is a PC-based set top box that functions as a dedicated portal into the Steam digital marketplace, where players... Read more...
The PAX East show in Boston, MA raged on this weekend with a massive crowd as large as we've every seen it overrunning the venue. From crazy Cosplay types to hardcore, no mercy gamers, there's an absolute heat of humanity pushing the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to what must be close to max capacity. PAX East appears to have outgrown their venue. That said, though there was lots of people watching to do, frankly, with a few notable exceptions, there wasn't a whole lot of new technology on display at PAX. Between MWC 2015 and GDC, most manufacturers have already pulled the curtain back on their latest and greatest PC and mobile gear. And with NVIDIA's GTC is happening next week as well,... CyberPowerPC is one of the boutique gaming PC builders that brought many interesting offerings to CES this year, and we got an up-close-and-in-person look at the bounty in the company’s hotel suite earlier this week. CyberPower's compact Zeus Mini gaming rigs aren’t perhaps as aesthetically sizzling at first glance as some other systems they showed, with a simple black rectangular box, some lights and colorful grills that pop a little bit, but CyberPowerPC looks to have done a good job laying out the guts of the machines--which is no small task with small form factor chassis. L: Zeus Mini; R: Steam Machine You can see the radiator for the liquid cooler in there, nestled with the ODD,... Read more...
Every company has their own take on Steam Machines, which has been quite interesting to see, and Dell’s strategy is to offer two options. One will be a dedicated SteamOS console while the other will be a desktop PC that doubles as a Steam Machine. The former bears the Alienware X51 name, which is fitting because the SFF X51 has been around for a while and makes sense as a Steam Machine. It also allows consumers to opt for different form factors, depending on their needs. Alienware Steam Machine Dell didn’t offer any specs or pricing, but the Alienware Steam Machine and the Alienware X51 Steam Machine edition will launch late this year; more details will be forthcoming closer to the... The long-awaited Steam Machine consoles are rolling out, and Digital Storm fittingly placed the “Bolt” name on its version. The first Bolt, which we reviewed, was all the things we expect now from Steam Machines--compact size, excellent specs, and a cool design. The Digital Storm Bolt II is a SFF and hybrid Steam Machine, which is to say that it offers both Steam OS and Windows, thus giving gamers the option to run either OS. That perhaps runs slightly counter to what Valve had in mind with Steam OS, but it’s a terrific idea nonetheless. “We (Digital Storm) are not looking to compete with console pricing,”? said Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm?s Director of Product...
