We all have our demons, though for most of us, they're internal minions that torture our thoughts—that's to say, we don't have actual demons following us around. Or do we? Programmer and designer Rich Whitehouse has built a script for iRobot's Roomba vacuum cleaner that will turn your living space into a playable Doom map. It's called Doomba, and it alters the vacuum's sensors so that it detect real-life demons in your home. Wait, that's not right. Or at least we hope it isn't. These are just computer generated maps based on our living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and everywhere else, right? Right!? Oh god, we hope so. "It would've been nice to get this done in time for Doom's 25th anniversary,... Read more...
iRobot might not be a familiar name to you, but surely you have heard of the company’s Roomba robot vacuums (and the parodies that go along with it). The autonomous vacuum cleaners are capable of navigating rooms in your house, avoid obstacles and clean both hardwoods floors and carpet without you even lifting a finger. However, iRobot’s CEO Colin Angle raised some eyebrows earlier this week in an interview that he gave with Reuters. In effort to add a new revenue stream for the company, Angle talked about a way that mapping data that Roombas gather while cleaning your home could be beneficial in other markets. “There’s an entire ecosystem of things and services that the smart home can deliver... We may not have flying cars or homes above the clouds as portrayed in The Jetsons, but as we dive deeper into the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) categories, our everyday gadgets are becoming smarter and more capable than ever before. So it is with iRobot's latest Roomba vacuum, the Roomba 980. Out of all the Roombas iRobot has produced since the very first model back in 2002, the Roomba 980 is the first one to combine adaptive navigation with visual localization to clean your pad for two hours, recharge itself, then continue sucking up dirt and debris until it vacuums an entire level of a home. iRobot is calling this functionality vSLAM, which stands for visual simultaneous localization and... Everyone wants a vacuum that sucks, though some suck more than others. Such is the claim iRobot makes with its new Roomba 800 Series, the next generation Roomba cleaning system that really, really sucks (in a good way, of course!). In fact, iRobot claims its newest self-propelled vacuum is up to 50 percent better at picking up dirt, debris, and hair from your floor compared to previous models. The Roomba 800 series introduces new AeroForce Extractors that are designed to amplify suction. This technology also breaks down debris so that the Roomba no longer chokes on tangled hair, thereby requiring less maintenance, which is what this vacuum is all about in the first place (maintenance free cleaning).... Are you too lazy to vacuum your own floor? We're just kidding. But a little help around the house never goes unappreciated. The company that started it all when it comes to robo-vacs is launching a new line at CES this week, the iRobot Roomba 700 series and the iRobit Scooba 230. The 700 Series is the company's smartest line of robot cleaners to date, and both lines use the iAdapt Responsive Cleaning Technology to monitor the environment 64 times per second, using dozens of behaviors to ensure the entire floor is thoroughly cleaned. The dirt-centric technology ensures thorough coverage, including under and around furniture, and multiple passes over the areas that need it most. The Scooba 230... Read more...
Asus, making vacuum cleaners? What on Earth is the world coming to? We know 2012 is supposed to bring about some fairly crazy happenings, but we aren't even out of 2009 yet! As the Roombas dominance in the robotic vac arena streaks towards its end, Asus--a mainstay in the consumer PC market--has decided to take a shot at ousting the king. For years now, the robotic vacuum has been synonymous with the Roomba name, but all that could be changing with the introduction of the ECleaner. This announcement comes just a week after Neato Robotics introduced its own Roomba competitor, and it should retail first in China and Taiwan (by the end of the month, actually). It will be made available through Asus'... Read more...
When was the last time you defragged your hard drive? Me neither. Diskeeper Corporation has included automated defragmentation functionality in its latest version of its system maintenance software: Diskeeper 2007. The technology, dubbed InvisiTasking, allows system maintenance to run invisibly in the background, and draws on unused system resources in order to perform defragmentation without affecting network performance. The launch of Diskeeper 2007 represents a new step forward for defragmentation, said Diskeeper product manager Michael Materie, because it allows users to "install it and forget it," rather than schedule regular defrag...
