Asustek and Gigabyte, two of the largest motherboard makers in the world, recently announced that they will be joining forces to build a new company that will combine production of their motherboard and graphics card products. This comes after rumors that Gigabyte was in danger of being bought out by their competitor, Foxconn. InfoWorld speculates that while the deal will benefit the industry and keep Gigabyte from being swallowed by a take-over, it may result in less competition and higher prices for end consumers. Apple Computer Inc. expects the average selling price of its iPod digital music players to decline in the current quarter from the prior period, the company's CFO said on Wednesday. "We expect them to be down a little bit in the June quarter," Apple's Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said. He also told Reuters that the gross margins on iPods in the just-completed March quarter were "above 20 percent," consistent with his past comments about iPod gross margins.  ... Read more...
It appears they will. As X-Bit labs writes, ATI is planning some pretty serious price cuts for their X1x00 series cards. The Radeon X1900 XTX will retail for around $549, and the X1900 XT being brought down to $479. Just in time for Nvidia's GeForce 7900 products."The Markham, Ontario-based GPU supplier is projected to announce price slash on the Radeon X1900-, X1800-, X1600 and X1300-series products shortly, according to sources familiar with the plans of the graphics giant. DigiTimes is reporting that DDR2 contract prices have soared a painful 18% since the second half of January. Amidst tight capacity, major memory vendors are free to play with pricing. Unfortunately, with Intel already in the DDR2 camp and AMD looking to join that group shortly it appears as though memory prices could be a sore spot for consumers in the coming months. Let's hope that memory module vendors take it easy on us and don't pass these price hikes over in their entirety.
