While kids across the land are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa and wondering what gifts he'll bring, HTC has decided that every owner of an unlocked One M9 handset living in the U.S. made the nice list and will receive a special gift of their own -- an over-the-air (OTA) update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. HTC is making good on a promise it made earlier this month. Following that up, HTC's Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, announced the news on Twitter yesterday, saying the updates were being finalized for distribution in the next day (which is today). In addition, owners of HTC's unlocked One A9 handsets could expect an incremental bump to Android 6.0.1, which comes with... Read more...
HTC could definitely use a boost when it comes to smartphone sales. The company that was once a shining star for the Android movement has been surpassed by flashier competitors like Samsung and budget Chinese rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi. To help gets some of its mojo back, HTC is offering up some holiday promotions to entice buyers to embrace its products.HTC One M9 One of the most attractive offers revolves around the company’s flagship One M9 smartphone. HTC is currently offering the smartphone for $649, which is its regular MSRP. That is by no means an eye-catching price, but the company is also giving away a Desire 626 smartphone, a $179.99 value, for free with your purchase. If you need... Read more...
HTC is patting itself on the back for working to improve various aspects of its flagship One M9 after its release. We we recently reviewed the One M9 and had mostly good things to say about the device, and following the newest update, One M9 owners can expect the built-in camera to take better pics, improved battery life, and less heat generated while charging. In regards to the camera, HTC says the update tweaks the auto-exposure balance algorithm to improve overall dynamic range, resulting in images that come to life with more detail and color balance, particularly when snapping photos in bright light environments. HTC also introduced improvements to low light performance for clearer and more... Read more...
HTC’s needed a big hit to reinvigorate its efforts in the smartphone world. Once a dominant player in the early days of Google’s Android operating system, HTC has seen its smartphone fortunes crumble amidst rival Android maker Samsung and profit king Apple. When you throw in Chinese powerhouses like Huawei and Xiaomi, HTC’s outlook in the smartphone market has become even cloudier. HTC was supposed to turn things around with the One M9 flagship smartphone (read the HotHardware review here), the follow-up to last year One M8. However, consumers have been slow to warm up to HTC’s newest flagship. That less than enthusiastic welcome for the One M9 is being felt by HTC, with the company revising... Read more...
What is it with big technology companies putting out horrendous advertisements? Microsoft has a long history of ads that miss the mark, everything from signing up Jerry Seinfeld to go shopping for shoes to the downright bizarre that defy explanation, and it looks like HTC is trying hard to follow in Microsoft's footsteps. HTC's latest attempt at marketing its flagship phone, the One M9, is a fictional drug called Cellami, or metalidone boomsoundide. No joke. Cellami is for people who struggle with afflictions known as bi-phonal displeasure disorder, SAD (Samsung Affective Disorder, or iOS (irritable operating system), not to be confused with bipolar disorder, the other SAD (Seasonal Affective... As has become the norm, major smartphone manufacturers are expected to launch a new version of their flagship phones annually. On top of that, the average consumer expects greater improvements and features with each successive release. It’s a tall order to meet such demands on an annual cycle, but that’s exactly where many of the major players find themselves. Now on its third iteration, the One line of high-end Android phones by HTC is hitting the market. It comes right around two years after the One M7, and just under a year after last year's HTC One M8. Casually glancing at the One M9, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the handset for last year’s version. The 5-inch display size hasn’t changed,... Read more...
The HTC One family just grew by, well, one with the addition of the One M9+ (or One M9 Plus, if you prefer), a fancy-pants phone with a spacious 5.2-inch Quad HD display (2560x1440) and all-metal design. Essentially a larger doppelganger of the of the original One M9 and only HTC's second Quad HD device (the other being the One E9+ released a week ago), the M9+ is curiously only available in China. Why only China? According to HTC, it's because the One M9+ is the result of "working closely with mobile operators" in the region to offer a specific set of specifications and radio network compatibility. HTC said it will confirm additional markets locally at a later date, though if you live North America... Read more...
HTC parted ways with another executive this week, though the company didn’t indicate who had initiated the split. Jonah Becker, the lead designer on HTC’s One M9 smartphone, announced his departure on Twitter yesterday. The move follows the departure of HTC co-founder Peter Chou from the CEO spot a little more than a week ago. Unlike Becker, who has left the company entirely, Chou is staying on as the head of HTC’s Future Development Lab. HTC has been battered in recent years by competing with Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market. Sales have improved lately, and the flagship One M9, which has been getting plenty of positive attention, arrived today. And HTC appears to be building on the... Read more...
HTC has scheduled a press event in Beijing, China for April 8, 2015, at which time it will unveil a new smartphone. The invitation carries the slogan, "More than One," which suggests it's getting ready to unveil the oft-leaked One M9 Plus (One M9+). It seems that most of the details are already floating around the web, though one thing the invitation seems to confirm is the presence of dual cameras. What appear to be dual cameras can be seen on the partial smartphone image that graces the press event invitation. This wouldn't be new territory for HTC, which equipped its One M8 with dual shooters under the marketing name Duo Lens. The primary benefit of multiple cameras is that you can refocus... Read more...
And just like that, the man largely responsible for HTC’s meteoric rise in the smartphone market is out of the CEO seat. The company announced today that HTC’s board of directors has named co-founder Cher Wang to the top spot to replace Chou, who will now head up the HTC Future Development Lab.  Cher Wang will retain her board chairperson position as she assumes the CEO role. An analyst speculated to Reuters that the appointment of a board member could suggest trouble attracting an executive from outside the company. The market has been brutal of late, taking a toll on HTC’s sales and seeing Samsung cede first place to Apple. However, HTC has successfully drummed... Read more...
Robert Downey Jr. melted many hearts last week when he showed up as Tony Stark to deliver a customized, bionic arm to a seven-year-old fan. The video went viral and showed how the thoughtfulness of others can make a lasting impression on a child. Today, however, Robert Downey Jr. is stepping back into his role as HTC spokesman, and the results are definitely more mixed. Ever since stepping into the role in 2013, Robert Downey Jr.’s commercials have been met with puzzled reactions and this year sees the arrival of nine new commercial “shorts.” All of the commercials are color-coded (i.e. white, black, purple, green), cover a wide range of genres (comedy, fantasy, horror), and all of them are extremely,... You have to hand it to HTC, the first company to build an Android handset (HTC Dream, otherwise known as the T-Mobile G1), for which it was handsomely rewarded. Samsung and Apple have stolen the smartphone show in recent years, but rather than pack it in and call it quits, HTC continues to build solid Android devices, the newest of which is the HTC One M9. And should you purchase one, HTC will provide a year of accidental damage protection at no cost. It's part of the HTC's new "Uh Oh" program, and as described, it's nothing short of awesome. Should you drop your One M9 onto the pavement and crack the screen or accidentally sustain water damage (like... Read more...
HTC’s recently unveiled One M9 will be one of the most sought after flagship smartphones this year. While it arguably doesn’t have the design panache of a device like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, it does bring with it a Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a microSD slot (something that the new Galaxy S6/S6 Edge can no longer claim), a 20MP rear camera, and a generous 2840 mAh battery. If you’d like to get your hands on a One M9 without paying a single penny, we have something that might be right up your alley. HTC this week announced a new U.S.-only contest that lasts through March 24 at 11:59 PM PT. Besides the requirement of being a legal resident of the U.S.,... Read more...
If the transition from the Galaxy S4 to Galaxy S5 was disappointing to customers and detrimental to Samsung’s smartphone sales/earnings, we have to wonder if the same fate will befall HTC. We hope not, but the HTC One M9’s specs have been officially revealed, and for better or worse, it’s more of the same. As we have detailed in previous articles, the HTC One M9 carries on the same design theme that we first saw with the One M7 and continued with the One M8. It’s a clean, sleek, industrial look, but it would have been nice to see HTC spice things up a bit. With Samsung swinging for the fences design-wise with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, we’ll just have to see how HTC’s conservative approach... Read more...
