Is the GPS world big enough for both Garmin and Navigon? Apparently not. It's official: Garmin has just completed their historical acquisition of Navigon, bringing together two of the biggest names in satnav history. Cliff Pemble, chairman and COO of Garmin, had this to say: "We are pleased to have the Navigon team join the Garmin family. We are looking forward to expanding our ability to serve our collective customers going forward." The other half, Egon Minar, Navigon’s board member, had this to say: "We are excited to be a part of Garmin and we look forward to turning our efforts toward integration and the opportunities ahead. Navigon has an innovative new product lineup that we’re... Read more...
This world just isn't big enough for the both of 'em. At least that's the impression we get, as Garmin has just announced the signing of a deal that will have them acquiring yet another navigation mainstay, Navigon. Actually, it's a subsidiary of Garmin that will do the acquiring, but it's still major news in the soft navigation market. Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO, obviously only had positive things to say about this whole ordeal: "This acquisition is a great complement to Garmin’s existing automotive and mobile business.  Navigon has invested significantly in the European automotive OEM business, and we feel that we can rapidly expand our automotive OEM footprint... Some say that the smartphone killed Cisco's Flip line of camcorders, and some would say that smartphone-based navigation systems are slowing killing the standalone GPS system. We still think those PNDs have life left in them yet, but Navigon's iPhone Navigation App definitely gives them a run for their money. MobileNavigator has been around for months, and version 1.8 adds some pretty killer features that haven't been there before. Version 1.8 is the eight major update to the app, with this one bringing a Reality Scanner (which helps to find nearby points of interest with an augmented reality view) as well as safety camera alerts as an In App Purchase. V1.8 also has an at-a-glance traffic gage... Read more...
In the early days of personal navigation devices, it wasn't unheard of for a PND to have preloaded maps of a single region rather than the entire U.S. Today, most PNDs come preloaded with a full map of the U.S.; many offer maps of Canada, Europe, and/or Mexico as well. Although having access to these maps can be useful, it can also be costly. That's why NAVIGON is announcing a customizable version of its iPhone navigation app, MobileNavigator, with regional map access. The new NAVIGON MyRegion offers a lower cost than the full-blown MobileNavigator by letting you buy just one region (Eastern, Central or Western U.S.). If you need additional regions later on, you can always unlock them using an... Read more...
When you think iPhone GPS, you probably think TomTom. That's likely because Apple themselves endorsed TomTom's app and cradle, but that one isn't widely viewed as the most superior option. Navigon is a lesser known navigation company, but the outfit's MobileNavigator app is easily one of the nicer choices when looking to route from your iPhone.Unlike most rivals out there, Navigon's software works with the original iPhone when coupled with a GPS receiver, so no one in left out (in theory). It obviously works better with the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS, and if you have been waiting for the right time to ditch your standalone GPS system and go all-iPhone, maybe this is the chance. The newest version... Read more...
NAVIGON announced the fourth free update (version 1.4.0) to its MobileNavigator iPhone navigation App. The update now integrates Google Local Search into the application and offers new functions such as enhanced pedestrian navigation, an audiobook mode, directions in a turn-by-turn list format, an Emergency Help function, geographic Coordinate Input, and more. The latest version of the software uses the iPhone's connectivity capabilities to enhance the navigation experience with services such as Traffic Live and Google Local Search. In addition, users now have access to the most up to date point of interest search results. Until January 11, 2010, NAVIGON has reduced the price of the MobileNavigator... Read more...
TomTom and Navigon announced updates to their turn-by-turn GPS navigation apps for the iPhone this week. TomTom's update for its $100 iPhone app includes a number of highly requested features, including text-to-speech directions and the company's popular Advanced Lane Guidance feature. Text-to-speech enables the iPhone to read the names of places and streets out loud. Advanced Lane Guidance provides a graphical view of complex intersections to help you navigate. TomTom's latest version also has map and safety camera updates, a new Help menu, in-app control for iPod playback, and customizable audio warnings to let you know if you're speeding or approaching a safety camera. The free update from... Read more...
While everyone seems to be talking about TomTom's GPS application for the iPhone, it's little-known Navigon that is really stepping up to the challenge. Today, the company is introducing its second major update for its MobileNavigator app, and it's definitely one worth checking out.For starters, the update makes the app the first on the iPhone to add text-to-speech. In case you've never used a dedicated navigator with this, said feature allows the program to announce street names in addition to turn-by-turn directions, so istead of only stating "turn right," the app informs the user to "turn right on to Main Street." Basically, it's one more huge step towards becoming a legitimate option in the... Read more...
Just like we heard back in June, Navigon is taking on TomTom and anyone else who dares enter the full-fledged iPhone navigation realm with its snazzy new MobileNavigator application. Released today in Apple's App Store for the North American market (the European version was released last month), the program only works with iPhone OS 3.0. Navigon claims that this app is the first on-board iPhone navigation solution from a major navigation company, and while TomTom was first to announce plans, Navigon is the first to deliver. If you'll notice, AT&T has its own Navigation app available as well, but that one costs $9.95 per month and isn't generally as fully-featured. This app, however, weighs... Read more...
It looks like TomTom won’t be the only manufacturer offering a GPS app for the iPhone. Navigon recently announced plans to offer two GPS applications for the iPhone this summer. One version of the Navigon app will offer turn by turn directions as well as many of the high-end features found on a portable navigation device such as views of highway signs at complex intersections and lane guidance. The Lite version of the software will offer map views and points of interest but no turn by turn directions. Michael Hoffman, head of Navigon's corporate communications, claims Navigon will be the first provider of a navigation application for the iPhone. In fact, the application is ready for launch and...
