Huawei is taking the fight directly to Apple with its new MateBook X. Aimed squarely at the 12-inch MacBook, the MateBook X employs a sleek aluminum frame and a generous 13-inch display with a resolution of 2160×1440 and a screen-to-body ratio of 88 percent thanks to thin 4.4mm bezels. Unlike the MacBook, which it will no doubt be compared to by everyone who looks at it, the MateBook X is powered by Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors, which is a noticeable upgrade from the Core m3 and Core m5 processors available in Apple’s counterpart. Despite the fact that up to a Core i7 can be configured... Read more...
This is shaping up to be an interesting summer. In addition to the ongoing CPU war between AMD and Intel, and a GPU showdown between AMD and NVIDIA, we're going to witness a mobile computing scuffle between Apple and Microsoft. This will take place starting in June when Apple will reportedly introduce upgraded 12-inch MacBook and MacPro laptops with faster processors. Both the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro family are getting bumped up to Kaby Lake, which is Intel's latest processor architecture. As it stands, Apple's 12-inch MacBook and MacBook models feature CPUs based on Intel's previous generation... Read more...
For whatever reason, Apple continues to drag its feet in offering a true laptop with a touchscreen display. However, it hasn't abandoned touch functionality on laptop systems completely. Apple introduced the Touch Bar on its latest MacBook Pro model, which replaces the row of Function keys at the top, and now it's been discovered that Apple filed a patent to dock an iPhone or iPad onto a MacBook-looking laptop.Apple's application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office is for an "electronic accessory device" that can "extend and expand usefulness of a portable computing device." Apple’s notebook computers aren’t exactly known as energy hogs — well, if we toss aside the Consumer Reports battery fiasco that was attributed to a Safari bug — but it’s always appreciated to eek as much battery life as possible out of a machine. Given that Apple has full control over the hardware and software stack of its products, it has always had an advantage when it comes to optimizing for power efficiency. A new report indicates that Apple is taking an additional step in its efforts to increase Mac battery life by developing a custom ARM chip that will handle low-power tasks, easing the... Read more...

It’s no secret that Apple’s computing lineup has simply been neglected over the years. Apple’s key MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac and even Mac Pro lines have gone for years with minimal or no updates at all, and sales have suffered as a result. However, Apple is holding an event later this week in which it is widely expected to showcase new MacBook Pros and perhaps even new iMacs. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been pretty accurate with regards to iPhone channel leaks over the years, has given some insight into what he expects to see with this week’s Mac updates. The most exciting... Read more...
It appears that Apple is bound and determined to improve the keyboard on its MacBook Pro system in some way, shape, or form. Exactly how remains to be seen. We've heard rumors of Apple swapping out the top row of Function keys for touch sensitive control that display icons based on the app a person is using, but that might not be all it has up its sleeve. A newly published patent application from Apple describes a MacBook keyboard that would allow users to adjust the sensitivity of the keys. Apple correctly surmises in its patent application that "certain users may prefer certain keyboards (and/or... Read more...
Apple had been keen on saying we're in the post-PC era, but that was before tablet sales took a nosedive. The company's iPad line wasn't immune from the waning interest in tablets either, and surprise-surprise, that silly post-PC chatter has quieted down. So now what? Well, apparently Apple has been working on some nifty upgrades to its MacBook line, and not just underneath the hood. The biggest feature upgrade could actually be in the keyboard.Image Source: Flickr (tobiasbischoff) Yes, we're aware of how silly that sounds, but we're not talking about an ordinary plank or even a mechanical key... Shots fired, shots fired! Microsoft took aim at Apple in a new advertisement with a snarky jingle highlighting ways in which its Surface Pro 4 tablet is better than a MacBook, the latter of which is "less useful like a hat for your cat." It's the latest in a long line of Mac versus PC commercials where Apple and Microsoft trade barbs. This latest ad draws attention to the Surface Pro 4's detachable keyboard, included stylus, and touchscreen display, all things the MacBook family lacks. There's also a subtle shout out to Windows Hello, the biometric security system Microsoft built into Windows 10,... Read more...
Apple hoped to revolutionize the thin and light category with its 12-inch MacBook in early 2015. Not everyone was convinced, however, given the notebook’s meager performance, single USB-C port that was used both for charging and expansion, and $1,299 entry point. The 2016 update didn’t move the bar much further, which is giving PC manufacturers the perfect opportunity to take shots at Apple’s premium notebook. That’s where Asus comes into play with its new ZenBook 3, which is a prime example of “Anything you can do I can better.” The ZenBook 3 measures in at just 11.9 millimeters thick, undercutting... It seems as though officials at the Maine Department of Education are finally coming to terms with something that many in the tech community have been saying for years: tablets can often be a poor substitute for full-fledged computers in the classroom, especially in higher grades. Instead of being used as educational tools to help supplement traditional classroom lessons and aide in completing assignments, iPads in the classroom are being used for gaming while at the same time serving as a poor replacement for laptops when it comes to productivity. The Auburn School Department decided to survey... Read more...
Apple views its 12-inch MacBook as "the future of the notebook," and if that's the marketing pitch, you can't go around selling the thing with old hardware, right? Of course not, though up until now that's exactly what Apple was doing. Not anymore—Apple went and updated the MacBook with Skylake processors, while also giving it longer battery life and a new rose gold option. The MacBook now rocks Intel's sixth-generation Core M processors ranging in speed from 1.1GHz to 1.3GHz, with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.1GHz. These chips bring burlier integrated graphics to the table that Apple says increases... Read more...
Hewlett-Packed is ready to take on Apple in regard thin and light notebook designs, and it wants to be a design leader that other OEMs aspire to emulate.
