Don't get your hopes up; it's not Universal Music or even EMI.  It's a small label  from Germany, and it's already folded. Nonetheless, a few days ago Dependent records’ CEO Stefan Herwig decided to upload all the albums from his label -which mainly features aggrotech, electro-industrial and futurepop artists- onto The Pirate Bay.In the description on the torrent download page Herwig writes: “I closed down my record label Dependent Records for good. But since I want my music to be heard by the people out there, everything I have ever published is now available on The Pirate Bay,” stressing that it’s a legal torrent, approved by the label. Ironically, the reason the label closed down:... Read more...
A lot of users have called RealPlayer "badware," but mostly for performance reasons.  All right, all right, we're being kind; there have been plenty of complaints over Real Networks' policies before.StopBadware.org said Tuesday it has labeled two versions of the RealPlayer media player as "badware," or spyware.RealPlayer 10.5, it claims, "fails to accurately and completely disclose the fact that it installs advertising software on the user's computer." And RealPlayer 11, it claims, "does not disclose the fact that it installs Rhapsody Player Engine software, and fails to remove this software when RealPlayer is uninstalled." Ryan Lukin, PR manager for RealNetworks, disputed some of the claims.... Read more...
Asustek's nifty and inexpensive Eee PC laptop certainly captivated the market and all us assorted tech writers,  so now seems as good a time as any for Asustek to go after other segments of the market.  They've decided people might like their version of a desktop PC, an "all -in-one" like the iMac, and an "E-TV." The E-DT, a desktop PC which will not be sold with a monitor, is scheduled to launch in April or May this year and will be showcased at CeBIT 2008. Linux users might actually agree with this "false positive". On the other hand Microsoft breathes a sigh of relief, as for once the antivirus software in question is not Windows Live OneCare. The security company's systems had decided that a virus called Huhk-C was present in the explorer.exe file, leading to its confinement or, in some cases, deletion. As Windows Explorer is the graphical user interface (GUI) for Windows' file system, this made it difficult to perform many common tasks within the operating system, such as finding files.David Emm, a senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, told ZDNet UK on Friday that the company was still examining its checklist to find out why the false... It's here.  Now the question is, can we toggle the Ribbon off?As promised, Microsoft has released SP1 for Office 2007 today, available on their Office download site. At the same time, Microsoft has released SP1 for Visio 2007 and Project 2007.The Office 2007 SP1 link, which was dead until just a few minutes ago, is now live, and is here. As I indicated earlier, for now, due to recent concerns over Automatic Updating, this will be a manual-only install.Did we ask about the Ribbon yet?  Based on the linked whitepaper, it doesn't look like turning off the oft-criticized Ribbon is a new option.  Heavy sigh.... Yes, yes, it's all tweaking of the UI, but it's all these little touches, right, that draw people to particular products?Gmail has added colored labels. Now, instead of just seeing the text of a label next to the subject, you’ll see the label in color (pictured). You can use either white text on the selected color or colored text on a lighter background of the same color. Strictly speaking, it’s just prettying up the UI, but still … Now, what are the drawbacks? Well, you have to use the newer version of Gmail, as I said. You also have to use IE7 and Firefox 2.x, as well (I would hope you were already anyway).Ugh, the drawback of using the newer version of Gmail.  Ha, naturally it's expected,... Read more...

The music industry just can't admit that the CD, although not dead, is dying.  The latest attempt to save the medium, the "ringle" combines three songs with a ringtone for one price.  But the price they are suggesting isn't one that is likely to grab many buyers. The original version of the song, plus a remix and an older song would be combined with a ringtone download for a single price. While the RIAA has approved the "ringle" term and plans to push for it industry-wide, only Universal and Sony BMG have signed on so far. Ringles will retail for $6-$7 USD, and it is believed that stores will pay around $4 per disc to carry them. So far, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon have... Read more...
