It has been several years since Apple has released an updated iPod touch. The former workout companion and 2000’s teen hangout mainstay has been supplanted by newer products like iPhones and iPads. Thankfully, the classic iPod touch is getting a refresh and an attractive price tag of $199. The new iPod touch incorporates Apple’s 10 Fusion chip (first seen the elderly iPhone 7), which is a dramatic upgrade on the processing front. The device is the first iPod touch to feature AR gaming, education, web-browsing experiences and Group FaceTime. Its image detection can even bring 3D toys and sculptures to life. Users can downloaded a variety of games from the App Store right now and will... Read more...
After first announcing the operating system in June, Apple is now ready to make iOS 9 available to the masses. Apple switched things up a bit leading up to the official release of iOS 9, allowing the public widespread access to the beta operating system which allowed customers to be on the bleeding edge of Apple’s software releases, while at the same time giving Apple a larger device pool to draw data and feedback from. "With this update, your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch become more intelligent and proactive with powerful search and improved Siri features," states Apple’s release notes for iOS 9. "New multitasking features for iPad allow you to work with two apps simultaneously, side-by-side... Read more...
We reported last week that Apple was set to unveil a next generation iPod touch with a faster, 64-bit processor (the current iPod touch is using the old-as-dirt A5 SoC). We had expected that Apple would use the 2013-era A7 processor for the redheaded stepchild of the iOS family, but the folks from Cupertino, California surprised us with an even more potent SoC. The new 2015 iPod touch features the current generation A8 processor, which is used in Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The arrival of the A8 also means that the M8 motion coprocessor is also along for the ride, which allows the iPod touch to function as a pedometer. The rear iSight camera is now an 8MP unit (up from 5MP), but the display... Read more...
With the success of its iPhone family, Apple could be forgiven if it decided to retire its iPod touch line altogether. However, an early retirement doesn't appear to be in the cards for the Cupertino outfit. Not only is the iPod touch line sticking around, but rumor has it the media player is getting a 64-bit upgrade, leaving the iPhone 5C as the only remaining 32-bit device. Current generation iPod touch devices are powered by Apple's custom A5 System-on-Chip (SoC). The rumor that's circulating doesn't mention which SoC Apple will plop inside its next generation of iPod touch devices, though the A7 chip that's used in the iPhone 5S seems like a logical choice. If... Read more...
As Steve Jobs’ emails are being used against Apple in an antitrust lawsuit, the company is also being accused of deleting songs from consumers’ iPods that were purchased from rival music services between 2007 and 2009. During a court session at the U.S District Court in Oakland, California, Apple confirmed that it had deleted non-iTunes music but argued that it was a legitimate security measure. During this time period, consumers who tried to sync their iPods, which had non-iTunes music on it to their iTunes library, would receive an error message that would instruct them to restore their device to its factory settings. However, when users restored the settings, the music from rival services... Read more...
This might be Google's week to shine with its I/O developer event taking place, but lest anyone forget about its main rival, Apple today made an announcement of its own. Effective immediately, Apple's 16GB iPod touch is available in the same color options as its larger capacity brethren -- pink, yellow, blue, silver, space gray, and (PRODUCT) RED -- and also now sports a 5-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording. Prior to today, Apple's entry-level iPod touch was only available in silver and space gray. It also lacked a rear camera. Now it's the same as the other 32GB and 64GB models, and it carries a cheaper price tag to boot -- Apple reduced the price to $199, down from $229.... Read more...
The holiday shopping season is zooming right on by, and if you celebrate Christmas, time is quickly running out to order goods and have them arrive on time. Planning to plop an iPad Air under the Christmas tree for little Billy this year? Time has run out if you want to get it engraved, but for a non-engraved tablet, you can order today and still have it arrive in time with standard shipping, or order by December 22 with next-day shipping. Apple has put together a series of handy charts showing the cut-off dates for several products and shipping options in order to receive them by December 24th. In addition, the Cupertino company is offering free standard shipping on everything now through December... Read more...
Apple catches a lot of flak for keeping its ecosystem so locked down and, at times, unnecessarily restrictive in functionality, but one thing that works in the company's favor is that nearly all iOS users are on the same page, so to speak. Users don't get to choose between tons of different hardware devices like they do in Android's world, and while that's a bummer -- a phablet sized iPhone would be groovy, for example -- the upside is that fragmentation hardly exists. According to Apple's developer page, 74 percent of Apple's mobile devices are running iOS 7. That means nearly three out of every four iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad device is equipped with the latest version of Apple's mobile OS.... Read more...
If you've been holding out for a price drop on Apple's fifth generation iPod touch line, perhaps today's newest addition will be of interest. It's a 16GB model that Apple quietly slipped into the lineup, and not only is it the least capacious, it's also the least expensive with a $229 price tag. Where was this SKU during last year's holiday shopping season? You have to wonder if Apple planned all along to delay the launch of a more affordable 16GB model, thereby forcing holiday shoppers looking to fulfill iPod touch wishlists with higher priced versions (the 32GB model sells for $299 and the 64GB model for $399). Or maybe it's arrival is by popular demand. Whatever the reason, it's here now,... Read more...
Don't worry if you're suffering from a hangover today, so are many others, and apparently your iPhone might have one as well. Not a real one, mind you, though reports have surfaced that some iOS 6 users have been bitten by a bug preventing Apple's scheduled "Do Not Disturb" feature from automatically disabling on New Year's Day. The Do Not Disturb feature is supposed to silence calls, alerts, and notifications when it's enabled, and you can set it to run during specific hours, like late at night and into the wee hours of the morning when you're fast asleep. That's how it's supposed to work, anyway. "I am in Japan so it is 2013, and I am finding that my iOS devices (iPhone 4 and iPad 2) are showing... Read more...
Attention citizens of New York, be careful where you wield your iPhone, lest you make yourself a target for thieves. The crime rate is up in New York City, and according to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the reasons is because of the number of iPhone and iPad thefts that have occurred. A rise in thefts of Apple devices directly contributed to a slight bump in New York City's annual crime index, a statistic that also includes some big time felonies such as murder and grand larceny. As of Monday, there have been 3,484 more major crimes in 2012 compared to last year. In the same time period, Apple product thefts increased by 3,890, more than offsetting the rise in crime. "If you just took away the... Read more...
Lost in the hubbub of the iPhone 5 launch and all the recent iPad Mini rumors is the fact that Apple also updated its iPod touch line. Like the iPhone 5, the new iPod Touch devices sport a larger Retina display that's now 4 inches, better hardware, Siri support, and for the first time an assortment of color options. They're also finally shipping to customers. On Apple's website, new iPod touch orders are listed as being available to ship in October. We're a little less than two weeks into the month, and those who placed their pre-orders in September are starting to report that they're receiving shipping confirmation emails from Apple in the U.S., with expected delivery dates as early as October... It wasn't that long ago that Apple's iPod line sold like gangbusters, taking the MP3 player market by storm and creating a frenzy that other companies have been unable to replicate. Fast forward to 2012, a time when iPad and iPhone sales are booming, and some are wondering if the iPod is on the verge of obsolescence. A peek at Apple's latest financial report reveals that iPod sales are down 10 percent sequentially and have dropped 17 percent in the past nine months. Monetarily, Apple notes that "iPod net sales decreased by $256 million and $1.6 billion during the third quarter and first nine months of 2012, respectively, representing decreases of 20 percent and 24 percent compared to the same... Apple and Google may be bitter enemies in the mobile space, but in a sense, they're also business partners. It's all about the Benjamins, which is why these rivals are both willing to be strange bedfellows, because at the end of the day, both are increasing their bottom line by working together. We're talking about Google's search deal with Apple, in which the sultan of search reportedly paid the Cupertino outfit $1 billion in 2011 to be featured as the default search engine in Safari. Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter dropped the staggering figure in a recent note to investors, according to BusinessInsider. The revelation comes as Apple appears to moving away from Google Maps, which Schachter... Read more...
