In the world of storage, there are natural tradeoffs. Usually, you'll trade a bit of capacity for size, or perhaps size for speed. HGST, which presently sits under the Western Digital umbrella, is pushing the enterprise boundaries a bit with the world's highest capacity 10K RPM hard drive in the 2.5-inch form factor. Designed for compact server use and mission critical applications, the new drive holds a staggering 1.8TB of information (with smaller sizes available if you aren't willing to pony up for the flagship). The Ultrastar C10K1800 holds 50% more than prior generations of the same drive family, 2.5x better random write performance, and 23% faster sequential performance over prior generation... Hulu, the joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp. (Fox) announced on Tuesday post the premieres of many shows not as soon as they appear on TV, but rather prior to broadcast. Hulu said it would be showing the season-opening episodes of Knight Rider, Lipstick Jungle, Chuck, Life and 30 Rock a full week before the shows hit the airwaves. You can find Hulu's fall premiere lineup here, which will be coming to the site over the next seven weeks. While new to Hulu, this isn't the first time that season premieres have appeared online prior to broadcast. For example, earlier this year NBC Universal launched season four of Battlestar Galactica on SciFi.com 10 hours before broadcast, and... Read more...

If you've used Google News, you know typically it carries a headline and a few snippets of text but sends readers to publishers' sites for the full story.  This means that you might end up at the Seattle Times for an AP story.  Now, however, Google will host wire service stories on its own site, instead of redirecting users to other sites. The four agencies – the Associated Press, the Canadian Press, the Press Association and Agence France-Presse – will supply a "feed" to Google News, allowing its algorithms to detect which sites are running wire copy and remove them from the search results. Because the four wire services do not have their own consumer news websites,... Read more...

Almost anyone who's ever spent a few minutes with Wikipedia can start appreciate the vast wealth of knowledge the site has to offer. Though the free encyclopedia is open to a whole host of problems, such as inaccurate information, questionable sources, and vandalism, its popularity continues to grow. Even with all the site's problems, the information on most articles is fairly accurate, as there are many respectable users who have taken up the job of keeping the service clean, and the information inside accurate.
