A sad statement on humanity, as in Pennsylvania a two-year-old was beaten and killed by her mother's boyfriend - with a video game controller.  Still worse, it was reported that the boyfriend had abused the child previously, yet the mother had not left him.It was clear from the bruises and other injuries on the little girl's body that Sunday was not the first time she had been abused, Dauphin County coroner Graham Hetrick told WGAL-TV. He said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he has ever seen.Baez, 19, called for an ambulance Sunday and said (Harve) Johnson had brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from an attempt to revive her in a bathtub, a police affidavit said.Johnson,... While it appears there certainly is an ad for this particular, er, subject, the question of how legitimate it is remains. In one of the more unbelievable media twists to come in the aftermath of last week’s Byron Review, a national newspaper is offering readers 'hundreds of pounds' to confess that games pushed them into a life of crime. An advert encouraging readers to ‘pitch’ their story to the newspaper has appeared on an 'online talent community’ – which promotes opportunities for aspiring actors and models to raise their profile. The Byron Review piece discussed above is about a piece in the UK paper The Review that said that Tanya Byron wanted laws changed so that retailers faced a stiffer... We do?  And we always thought it was all about winning - which usually means not dying.I can't even count the number of ways I've died. Like most gamers, I've been slaughtered by AK-47-wielding terrorists, poisoned by eldritch spiders and blown up with alien frag grenades. I've also been impaled on medieval swords, ripped limb from limb by dinosaurs and impassively stomped by 20-story-tall, walking war machines that barely noticed my existence.Yet here's the thing: It's possible that these deaths have been among my most enjoyable game experiences. This is the fascinating argument of a new paper by Niklas Ravaja, a scientist who has done pioneering research into the emotions of gamers as they... Apple and game developers have a real hit or miss relationship.  A pair of great examples are Blizzard, who only seems to do tandem Windows/OS X releases these days, and Valve, who claim Apple's game-oriented SDKs aren't well supported.  So does this bode well or poorly for the iPhone? It seems that EA and SEGA both think that the iPhone SDK is up to the job:"The animation technology in the iPhone OS enables us to build awesome games,” said EA chief executive John Riccitiello. "I think iPhone consumers are going to be blown away by the games we create for this platform."Similarly, SEGA's Ethan Einhorn showed off a version of his firm's Super Monkey Ball title that leveraged the iPhone's... When Amazon.com opened its software download service in early January, it seemed curious that they would create a downloader app if they didn't have something larger in mind. A job posting on Gamasutra suggests Amazon will soon start a PC game download store to compliment Unbox, its video-on-demand service, and the site's MP3 download store. The job posting asks programmer/engineers to apply to become a part of the Software and Video Games Digital Technology Team at Amazon, which is "responsible for digital distribution of software and video game products from the Amazon website, including the newly launched Amazon Software Download store."This is precisely what we have anticipated, though not... As consoles once again start looking a lot more like PCs in terms of functionality and capabilities, they are going to need anti-virus protection.  At least, that's what Tokyo-based Trend Micro wants PS3 owners to think just about 5 seconds before said PS3 owners buy their new anti-virus software for the PS3.“The company bills the software as the first of its kind for a home gaming system. It was released earlier this month as part of a PS3 upgrade and will be free until April. Some industry experts wonder whether consumers will leap for the technology the way they snap up security products for the more vulnerable PC and whether protection for video game consoles is really necessary.”We're... Every once in a while Steampowered survey results turn up some interesting numbers about the gaming PCs that are used by today's modern gamers.  So what's hot with gamers today?According to the survey: 2+ GB of RAM (More than 40%), Vista (almost 15%...not bad considering the extra resources it claims), and strangely enough single core CPUs which account for almost 60% of the current CPU powering today's gaming rigs.Strangely enough rigs with 4 CPU cores (Either quad-core or dual socket) aren't used in many machines (less than 4%), and CPU speeds we'd term low-to-mid seem to be the most common.  Since this is a gaming community we were honestly predicting that mid-to-high end CPUs would...
