Netflix has long chased after methods of improving its movie recommendation algorithms, once even awarding a $1M prize to any team of people who could substantially improve on the then-current design. As part of that process, the company has been researching neural networks. Conventional neural networks are created with vast nodes of CPU clusters, often with several thousand cores in total. Netflix decided to go with something different, and built a neural network based on GPU cores. In theory, GPU cores could be ideal for building neural nets -- they offer huge numbers of cores already linked by fast internal interconnects and with relatively large pools of onboard memory. Whether or not the... Read more...
It seems like Intel's Ivy Bridge is getting all the attention these days, but let's not forget about AMD, which is getting ready to roll out a new platform of its own. AMD's upcoming A10 and A18 Trinity Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) are scheduled to arrive in the second quarter of this year, and already we're seeing compatible socket FM2 motherboards being announced, including the brand-spankin'-new A85F2-A Deluxe by Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS). The A85F2-A Deluxe is one of five FM2 models ECS has planned, the other four being the A75F2-A2, A75F2-M2, A55F2-A2, and A55F2-M3. As for the A85F2-A Deluxe, this board wields half a dozen USB 3.0 ports, eight 2.0 ports, GbE LAN, seven 6Gbps... Read more...
Multiple motherboard manufacturers are warning that precipitously rising HDD prices will impact their sales. Gigabyte has issued guidance that it now expects Q4 shipments to fall by 20 -25 percent, while Asustek predicts a much smaller decline of ~five percent. Analysts believe Asus is underestimating the impact of the price increases, and think the company's sales could fall as much as ten percent. This would be in line with guidance from MSI, ECS, and Asrock. Exposure to the shortage will vary depending on the degree to which a manufacturer relies on retail sales and the price points of their various products. The impact on budget boards in the retail channel, for example, is likely to be catastrophic.... Read more...
All-in-one (AIO) systems like Apple's iMacs or the Asus 2400ET that were reviewed earlier this year are much like notebooks, in that they trade potential upgradeability for convenience and a smaller footprint. RAM is the one component users can count on being able to upgrade, though some models may offer an additional hard drive bay or a slot for a mini-PCIe card. The ECS G11 is a different sort of animal; ECS is marketing the system as featuring a user-replaceable motherboard. The system ships with a bog-standard mini-ITX board based on Intel's H61 chipset, supports up to 8GB of DDR3-1333, includes a slim DVD optical drive, a 150W power adapter, and wireless support. USB 2.0 connectivity is... Read more...
To the best of our knowledge, ECS just did something no other motherboard maker has yet done. What is it, you ask? They jumped on the 3D bandwagon by releasing a new motherboard "specially designed for 3D home theater" setups. ECS brings a bunch of buzzwords to the table to promote its latest micro-ATX motherboard. In terms of 3D, the ECS Black Deluxe H67H2-M fully supports HDCP and 3D Blu-ray movies without installing a discrete graphics card. There's also ECS' "4most Display Design," which means it comes equipped with DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA outputs. Other notable features include: Two USB 3.0 ports Supports 2x SATA 6Gbps, 1x eSATA 3Gbps, 3x SATA 3Gbps, 1x SATA to eSATA cable Easy Debug... Read more...

When we think about ECS and their product lines, we typically expect a budget-minded approach. Solid products at reasonable prices that don't exactly wow the consumer, but don't hit them hard in the wallet either. The ECS X48T-A motherboard that we looked at a few weeks ago was one of the first steps by ECS to change that image, although a few missteps with the construction as well as some overclocking issues didn't overly sway us to their new way of thinking. Thus, we were a bit surprised when we first heard about the ECS GeForce 9800 GTX+ Hydra - a twin pack of high-end graphics cards consisting of two GeForce 9800 GTX+ cards combined with liquid-cooling. The 9800 GTX+ is the upper level of... Read more...

Stop us if you've heard this one before: In this article we will be looking at the latest high-end desktop chipset from Intel, featuring support for DDR2 and DDR3 memory, support for 45nm dual- and quad-core processors, and PCI Express 2.0 connectivity with 16 lanes devoted to each PEG slot and compatibility with ATI's CrossFire technology.  If it all sounds familiar, it's because the Intel X48 Express Chipset that's used on the three boards we'll be looking at here is almost exactly the same as the X38 Express that preceded it a few months back.  In fact, if we take a gander at the chipset block diagram below, the only glaring addition would be official... We're writing to let you know that we have just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of three X48-based motherboards. The first motherboard comes from ASUS, and is a member of the gamer-oriented Republic of Gamers series, which we have taken a few looks at in the past. We've been mostly impressed by what they've offered in this series, and expect no less with the Rampage Formula. Next up is the X48T-A from ECS. We can honestly say that we haven't seen much from ECS in the past couple of years in the enthusiast segment, so we aren't exactly sure what to expect, but if early impressions mean anything, this "Black Series" board means business. Finally,... Read more...

Specs for the next-generation NVIDIA cards have leaked onto the web, but we advise readers not to place too much faith in these specs until the cards actually ship.On to the specs:“The GTX 280 enables all features of the D10U processor; the GTX 260 version will consist of a significantly cut-down version of the same GPU.  The D10U-30 will enable all 240 unified stream processors designed into the processor.  NVIDIA documentation claims these second-generation unified shaders perform 50 percent better than the shaders found on the D9 cards released earlier this year. The main difference between the two new GeForce GTX variants revolves around the number of shaders and memory bus width.  Most importantly,... Federal regulators continue to come down on hard on corporate executives they believe are involved with misrepresenting investors and analysts.  The latest group to get collared were 8 executives from AOL Time Warner who are being charged with inflating the company’s online advertising revenue by more than $1 billion between 2000 and 2002.“Four of the executives have agreed to settle the civil charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission by paying a total of roughly $8 million in fines and returning allegedly ill-gotten gains.  They are David Colburn, Eric Keller, Jay Rappaport and James MacGuidwin, who was controller of the media company.  The other three were in its business affairs... AMD has announced a management shakeup. They're struggling mightily to compete with industry leader Intel right now. AMD COO Dirk Meyer is reshuffling his executive personnel deck by moving some people sideways, some people up the ladder -- and some were given an empty printer paper box to clean their desk into before being escorted to the door. Oops, I meant they've: "...left the company to pursue other opportunities...""AMD is in a precarious situation right now from a business standpoint and it has to take some drastic measures," said Brian Matus, vice president of market research at IC Insights. "I am surprised there haven't been more moves. I think AMD had to take some cost-cutting measures... Read more...
We recently reported on the existence of the ECS G10IL, a mini-notebook/UMPC to compete with the Eee PC 900, but at the time ECS was very hush-hush on the details.  All that ended today when they posted the specs on their web site. The G10IL will be powered by a Diamondville CPU riding on a 945GSE chipset and featuring a single memory socket that can accommodate a 2GB module.  Adding to all that is an option of 8.9 inch or 10.2 inch screen, a 1.3 megapixel, and a 4 or 6 cell battery.  Perhaps the most interesting feature is the tri-band HSDP/HSUPA technology:“The 11-incher from ECS comes with built-in tri-band HSDPA and HSUPA, also called the "Super-3G" technology. The new broadband... Read more...
As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from ECS.It seems that ECS is preparing a sub-$500 ultra-portable laptop to do battle with the popular ASUS Eee PC.  At present the product's moniker is the G10IL, but it might get a flashier name to compete with the ASUS Eee and Cloudbook.“Although currently still in production, and details incredibly sketchy at the moment as to what else you will get in the box or when it will launch in the UK, what we do know is that it comes with a built-in webcam, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and a 56Kbps modem. There is no optical drive but if its got HSDPA it's sure to... Read more...
Various companies and even the RIAA have either settled with or won numerous law suits against pirates and/or networks that allow piracy such as the old Napster or Kazaa.  We're talking at least 9-figures worth of damages awarded and/or settlements paid off, but yet the artists don't seem to be getting paid:"Artist managers and lawyers have been wondering for months when their artists will see money from the copyright settlements and how it will be accounted for," said lawyer John Branca, who has represented Korn, Don Henley, and The Rolling Stones, among others."Some of them are even talking about filing lawsuits if they don't get paid soon."It would be an incredibly ironic end to the music... There is a rumor that the Eee PC is going to get a successor sometime in the new year.  Keep in mind that this is just a rumor, but the upgrade could be fairly extensive.  Early reports suggest that new Eee(e?) PC would feature a larger 8.9” screen, WiMAX, and could very well ride on Intel's new Menlow UMPC platform.“Should ASUS choose to adopt the Menlow platform for the next generation Eee PC, huge power saving will be realized for users. The current Eee PC uses a 90nm, 900MHz Celeron M processor running at 630MHz with the current official BIOS. Intel's Menlow platform includes a 45nm Silverthorne processor which promises ten times the power efficiency of first generation UMPCs using... Read more...
