AMD has released its product roadmap for the next two years and the company appears to have gone core crazy. Plans for several multi-core chip releases over the next two years will culminate in a 12-core CPU to be released in the first half of 2010. The first new product from AMD will be code-named "Shanghai," and is expected to see the light of day in the second half of this year. This will be AMD's first 45nm sever processor, and will support HyperTransport 3.0 as well as sporting a whopping 6MB of Level-3 cache. Intel, Samsung, and TSMC--big players in the fabrication of semiconductors--have announced that they will be collaborating in order to target an industry-wide transition to 450mm wafers starting in the year 2012. Most semiconductors today are manufactured on 300mm wafers--a transition that started in 2001--which was 10 years after the transition to 200mm wafers. Targeting 2012 as the next transition period keeps "in line with the historical pace of growth." Rumor has it that the Intel's next generation P45 chipset has hit a snag that will cause boards to ship in June instead of May.“The delay of the chipset is due to problems over compatibility between the chipset's PCI Express x16 port and graphics cards, noted the sources, adding that Intel has notified them that the problem should be solved and ready to launch 2-4 weeks behind the original launch schedule.”Despite the delay Intel and their partners are still expected to demo or at least display P-45 based boards at Computex.... We generally don’t use integrated graphics. You might not use integrated graphics. But there are more motherboards with integrated graphics sold than discrete cards, according to data published last year by Jon Peddie Research. That means you probably have friends and family buying systems with built-in graphics engines. Guess what happens when the work day is done and you take them into battle with you through a little Enemy Territory or Company of Heroes?  Poor performance likely gets them killed over and over. “U.S. and European customs officers seized more than 360,000 counterfeit computer chips and network components in a joint operation late last year, officials said Friday.”While 360,000 certainly seems like a large number, that makes one wonder how many bad units were in distribution altogether.  A good piece of advice for shoppers looking to buy the genuine article: If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.  We suggest sticking to well-known retailers/e-tailers with a good return policy as they're likely to spot these frauds before they even get into their warehouse.... Keith Fife and his colleagues at Stanford University have come up with they call a "multi-aperture image sensor," which allows digital pictures to collect and store depth-of-field information. Unlike other 3D camera setups, the data is gathered at the chip level, so no expensive and complicated multiple lens setups are required. Instead of devoting the entire sensor for one big representation of the image, Fife's 3-megapixel sensor prototype breaks the scene up into many small, slightly overlapping 16x16-pixel patches called subarrays. The small Intel Core 2 Duo chip that allows Apple to make their MacBook Air so slender is not exclusively licensed for use by Apple. Newsfactor reports that both Lenovo and Fujitsu are interested in using the 65 nanometer scale chip in their own ultrathin notebook offerings. Earlier this month, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the MacBook Air at the annual Macworld conference. The new laptop is so thin -- three-quarters of an inch at the thickest part -- that it fits into a manila envelope. Just like the rest of us nerds, Toshiba got to wondering what would happen if you put a Playstation 3 Cell processor into a laptop. They put one in one of their Qosimo G45 notebooks, which already sports an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.  They've named the system the Spurs engine. It allows the laptop to react to user hand gestures; scan through all your video files for particular faces and sort them into thumbnail lists; allows you to take a picture of your face and digitally alter it in various ways in 3D; and maybe most interesting, lets you change standard-definition video into sweet, sweet, 1080p. Rumors have been swirling about the future of VIA's CPU and platform groups for several weeks.  Initial rumors claimed that VIA was simply going to sell both groups if they could find an interested buyer.  It now appears that VIA is merging both teams under the banner of the CPU team."The company will still provide support from AMD platforms while continuing the support older Intel products that are not impacted by patent issues, the paper noted.Due to client demand, the company has not completely given up on negotiating with Intel for a patent contract, however, even if the company does receive a license, the current competitiveness in the chipset market means that the company would... Intel has been performing nearly flawlessly of late, but a rumor has surfaced regarding their allegedly revised release schedule.  At this time it is only a rumor, and shouldn't be taken as fact until we hear more.  Allegedly Intel's 45 nm High-K isn't working too well with low-end chips.“The problem with this one is that changing the process like that would basically need a complete re-layout of the chip. It was a short stay in the top 10.  After buying ATI, AMD entered the top 10 chipmakers, but it's already set to drop out of that list.Intel will increase its market share by the end of 2007 to 12.5 percent, keeping its place as the world's top chipmaker, while rival AMD will drop out of the top 10, research firm iSuppli predicted. Samsung Electronics will remain the world's second-biggest chipmaker with 7.4 percent of the market while Toshiba will rise to third place, pushing Texas Instruments to number four, iSuppli said. Total semiconductor revenues are expected to reach $271 billion, up 4.1 percent from 2006. In September, iSuppli had said it expected the market to grow by 3.5 percent.... Read more...
The much anticipated 45 nanometer scale Penryn chip from Intel will be formally announced today in at an event in San Francisco.  Shrinking circuit size from 65 nanometer is great, but the big news about the processor  might be what it's made from. Instead of silicon dioxide, the Penryn will be made from a material called hafnium. The new materials for making transistors, meanwhile, can increase their switching speeds by more than 20% while reducing their power consumption by about 30%, Intel estimates. Intel's latest chip designs have other features to raise efficiency. Performance increases, compared with earlier models, average 7% to 13% at the same clock speed, Mr. Perlmutter says.... It's a grand time to be in the GPU business. According to Jon Peddie Research, graphics chips manufacturers shipped 97.9 million units in the third quarter, a 20% rise over the preceding quarter, and 18% more than during the same period last year.  Intel is still king; AMD is the little engine that could; but it's Nvidia that's showing the biggest market-share rise.Overall, Intel held its lead, shipping 37.2 million units (+21.2% over Q3 2006) and claiming a 38.0% market share, which, however is down 3.8 points from 41.8% the company held in Q3 2006. AMD posted a slight shipment growth of 8.4% to 18.7 million units, translating into a 19.1% market share, down from 23.4% last year. ... Read more...
Samsung is the first manufacturer to utilize 30-nanometer scale technology for NAND flash chips. It introduced its very powerful and very small 64 gigabit flash chip earlier today. 30 nanonmeters is 30 billionths of a meter.  A single chip could be assembled from the maximum 16 of these little wonders that would hold the equivalent of 80 DVDS.  Interestingly, the manufacturing process Samsung is using is capable of even finer circuit size and greater miniaturization. California based Broadcom has released a new microprocessor for mobile phones, suitable for so-called 3G, or third generation mobile phone standards. Their "phone on a chip" incorporates the cellphone band, a radio receiver, an FM radio receiver, and is Bluetooth enabled too. Industry watchers say the chip is likely to give Broadcom a leg up on its biggest rivals, including San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., Germany’s Infineon Technologies AG and Dallas-based Texas Instruments Inc.“With what we believe is more than a full year's lead over similar competing products, this new (third-generation) solution should place Broadcom squarely at the head of the hyper-competitive 3G chip race," said Yossi Cohen,... AMD has announced a price reduction for a bevy of its single and double core Athlon 64 processors for desktop computers.  The discounts range from 5 to 28 percent. AMD has announced the price reductions in order to clear inventory in preparation for the upcoming launch of its Phenom CPUs, noted sources at motherboard makers. However, with the transition to next-generation platforms to take place soon, the price reductions will not affect demand much in the fourth quarter. In addition with the ongoing parts shortages, shipments performance in the fourth quarter should hold level or slightly drop compared to last year, added the sources. It has been quite some time since Intel launched a desktop chipset targeted squarely at power users and PC enthusiasts.  Of course, the P965 and current P35 have both been very well received by motherboard manufactures and the enthusiast community, but these chipsets were actually designed for the upper-mainstream space.  In fact, the 975X Express, which launched almost two years ago, was the last desktop chipset Intel specifically marketed for enthusiasts.
