Digitimes reports that Intel is preparing to use some additional price cuts in October to help phase out the stock of the budget-oriented Celeron D CPU's. As these processors are taken off the market, Intel will be replacing them with a single-core variant of the new Core 2 processors. Dubbed Conroe-L, these new processors will be released in the second quarter of 2007. An exciting new product for the value segment will also be the release of the Core 2 Duo E4300 dual-core processor in the first quarter of 2007. For the past few years, Intel's desktop processors have been playing second fiddle to AMD's Athlon 64 in a number of ways. Both single and dual-core variants of the Athlon 64 have been at the top of most benchmark charts essentially since their introduction, and AMD's processors have been more energy efficient as well.  Conversely, since the introduction of the Prescott core, Intel's processors have earned a somewhat notorious reputation for running hot and consuming more than their fare share of power. Scott from the Tech Report just sent word of a new article where he takes a look at Ageia's PhysX PPU.  In typical TR fashion, there's plenty of technical detail, but unfortunately there isn't much performance data due to the lack of software to support the device.  Here's our take on the PhysX PPU from a few weeks back. Is it possible that Nvidia might one day compete against AMD and Intel in the CPU market? Someone seems to think so, though it's still a long ways off if true. There is a very good write up posted at GamePC evaluating Intel's new 5000 series dual-core Xeon processors.  GamePC tested the new CPUs with Intel's new chipsets and FB-DIMM memory as well. "Today at GamePC, we've decided to take a thorough look at Intel's new dual-core Xeon 5000-series processors. These chips, based on their new "Demspey" core architecture, are Intel's second attempt at a dual-core Xeon design. The folks over at X-Bit labs take their time demystifying the inner workings of dual-core architecture in their latest article. Using some clever benchmarking techniques, they aim to compare data transfer rates between AMD and Intel's dual core CPUs. "The processors are working with data that are read from system memory to be modified and then written back. Data are cached in the CPU for faster processing, but more than one processor may request the same data in a multiprocessor system. The second part of the microprocessor history article has been posted at BTX Form Factor Info. Not very in depth, so it's pretty easy to understand, but covers many areas of processor evolution. There have been many players in the microprocessor story, but the two companies that have had the most impact are also the two that dominate the market; Intel and AMD.
