Last week, we brought you information about a relatively easy-to-exploit vulnerability in professional-grade Sony cameras. Now, Netgear is the latest high-profile tech company that is coming under fire for a potentially dangerous exploit that was first reported over four months ago. The vulnerability, labeled VU#582384 by Carnegie Mellon University’s CERT, allows “arbitrary command injection” on Netgear’s R7000 and R6400 routers (using firmware 1.0.7.2_1.1.93 and 1.0.1.6_1.0.4 respectively). According to CERT, it’s possible that earlier firmware for these two routers are also susceptible to attacks. The attack is carried out by enticing a user to visit a specially made website, after which commands... Read more...
The takeaway from a new survey is short and alarming: Hackers are winning the war. In a survey co-sponsored by PwC, the U.S. Secret Service, the CERT Division of Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute, and CSO security news magazine, it was found that cybercriminals are more relentless than ever. Some 500 executives of U.S. businesses, law enforcement services, and government agencies were pinged on a variety of topics as part of a 12th annual survey of cybercrime trends. Out of those surveyed, around 75 percent said they had detected a security breach in the past year alone. The average number of security breaches was 135 per organization. "Despite substantial investments... Read more...

An interesting tale from a reliable source has just tipped up regarding buying bargain iPods online: “The iPod came in just a couple of days--but as soon as I unwrapped it and connected it to my Mac at home I got an ominous alert from my usually quiet antivirus software.  The iPod, it informed me, contained some virus known as AdobeR.exe. As I dug into the problem, I learned something I probably should have realized before I ordered.  The ‘recertified’ iPod wasn't recertified by Apple, but instead through some third party.” The moral of the story is that if you’re going to buy a recertified part, get it directly from the manufacturer.  A virus on the device could end up being the... In an interview with Sony’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, that was published today revealed that price cuts to the PS3 are certain, but the extent of the price cuts are not yet known. Stringer declares that the company is trying to maximize the price cut’s effect, which probably means that analysts are busy at work right now. “Although Stringer declined to provide a target range for the cuts, researchers expect that Sony may trim the price by as much as $100 before the holiday season, hoping to spur a fresh wave of sales. A combination of a cut and ‘break-out’ games would revitalize the console, Stringer says.” “Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise, and a very good business model, compared... Read more...

Its a pretty safe bet to say almost everyone knows Windows Vista is out, so then what is NVIDIA's excuse? NVIDIA, a graphics processing giant, has yet to release WHQL certified drivers for its GeForce 8 series of cards. I find this somewhat ironic since the GeForce 8 series was marketed heavily on the fact that it was the only GPU available that offered Direct-X 10 support. Windows Vista was not sprung on an unsuspecting NVIDIA last weekend. NVIDIA has known for a great while that WHQL Vista driver support is expected of them. They also know damn well that their enthusiast customer base will not find their current feeble attempts acceptable and that their self-stated... Read more...
