Assuming Apple makes a 4G LTE-equipped iPhone at some point in the future, Sprint is open to selling such a device. At an investor conference, Sprint's Chief Financial Officer Joe Euteneuer indicated Sprint is free to offer an iPhone with LTE technology though he declined to say if Apple actually had such a phone planned. Euteneuer also indicated Sprint's contract with Apple is similar to the contracts Apple has with AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Additionally, Sprint isn't being held to any 4G LTE coverage requirements. Sprint intends to roll out its 4G LTE network in six cities by the middle of this year. Speaking about Sprint's LTE build out, Euteneuer said, "If you make the assumption that... Read more...

Sprint and HTC are sending out invites to an April 4 event where attendees will experience the "latest collaboration" between the companies. Both Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and HTC President Jason Mackenzie will be there, so you can assume it's going to be a big deal. Previously, we heard Sprint was getting the HTC One X, also referred to as the HTC Jet, though at the time this was only a rumor. This invitation adds some credibility to the rumor, and we'll know for sure in a couple weeks what to expect from the two companies. In the meantime, TechoBuffalo claims a "reliable Sprint source" has told them HTC will in fact unveil the Jet (One X) at the event. At this point, we still don't know if Jet is... Read more...
According to reports from S4GRU, HTC's new flagship phone, the One X, could become one of Sprint's first LTE handsets. Referring to the One X as the HTC Jet, unnamed "internal Sprint" sources have stated the wireless carrier will be getting this LTE-equipped phone on June 10. Of course, this date is still a few months away, but it's interesting to note that this date is nearly two years to the date that Sprint launched its first 4G WiMAX handset, the HTC EVO. Although the sources didn't specifically say the HTC Jet is the same as the HTC One X, the specs match including the dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with NFC capabilities. Other specs for the rumored Sprint device include... Read more...
Not even a year ago, in May 2011, Pew found that 35% of Americans had smartphones; in February, after conducting the same study again, that number is up to 46%. Thus, almost half of all cell phone-owning American adults now have a smartphone. What is perhaps more significant is that for the first time, there are more smartphone users (48%) than users of other types of cell phones (41%). The other major finding is that the percentage of adults without any cell phone dipped from 17% in May 2011 to 12% in February 2012. As expected, the percentage of younger adults with smartphones is still far higher than that of older adults, although the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups saw a big uptick in adoption.... Read more...
While speaking to CNET Asia, Stephen Sneeden, Product Marketing Manager for Sony Mobile, indicated his company may not release quad-core smartphones until early in 2013. While many mobile handset manufacturers have announced and shown off their latest quad-core handsets this week at Mobile World Congress, it appears Sony is holding off for better performance. Sneeden did qualify his remarks, saying they are only his assumption and that Sony will make official announcements when it is ready to do so. Sneeden also indicated that Sony is waiting to join the quad-core movement until the performance matches battery efficiency. In the meantime, Sneeden indicates "What we are going to be doing in the... Read more...
While many of today's better smartphones offer dual-core processors and 1GB of RAM, alongside plenty of onboard storage, one of the easiest differentiating points between smartphones today has become the screen--size, resolution, and screen technology are all considerations. It seems that there are a lot of people who aren't taking Microsoft very seriously when it comes to competing in the smartphone marketplace. However, various well-known analyst firms, including IDC, Gartner, and iSuppli, believe Windows Phone could actually overtake iOS and become the second most popular smartphone platform by 2015. The head of marketing for Windows Phone, Achim Berg, believes this prediction is conservative. In September, research from Gartner and IDC suggested that Windows Phone (Mango) could grab as much as 20 percent of the market share by 2015. iSuppli's most recent predictions suggest that Windows Phone will hold about 16.7 percent of the market share by 2015.
