iOS might get the bulk of the attention when it comes to Apple's operating systems (like the newly announced iOS 13), but we can't forget its big brother: macOS. Apple today announced macOS 10.15 Catalina, which is the latest refinement to an operating system that dates back to 2001's Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah. Perhaps the biggest thing to be announced with macOS Catalina is Project Catalyst, which previously carried the codename Marzipan. In essence, it's a framework for developers to quickly and easily bring their iPad apps over to the macOS desktop platform. Apple has already been using Catalyst internally, and that's how iOS apps like Apple News and Stocks made their way over to macOS... Read more...

As we mentioned a few days back, AMD’s been working on a new set of drivers for its GCN-based graphics cards and APUs, which enable Mantle and a number of other features as well. Just to quickly recap, the Catalyst 14.1 betas (which were just released and are available here) are the first publicly available drivers from AMD that support Mantle, AMD’s “close to the metal” API that’ll let developers wring additional performance from systems equipped with GCN-based GPUs. The new drivers, however, will also add support for the HSA-related features introduced with the recently released Kaveri APU, and will reportedly fix the frame pacing issues associated with Radeon... AMD has a new set of drivers coming in a couple of days that are poised to resolve a number of longstanding issues and enable a handful of new features as well, most notably support for Mantle. Though the number/naming convention may change by the time the drivers are actually released, we’re told the upcoming Catalyst 14.1 betas are going to be the first publicly available drivers from AMD that will support Mantle, AMD’s “close to the metal” API that’ll let developers wring additional performance from GCN-based GPUs. However, the new drivers will also add support for the HSA-related features introduced with the recently released Kaveri APU, and will reportedly... Read more...

Yesterday, AMD announced that it would cease offering monthly driver updates, and instead issue Catalyst versions only "when it makes sense." That statement would be a good deal more comforting if it didn't "make sense" to upgrade AMD's drivers nearly every single month. Before we go down that road, we want to acknowledge that AMD's announcement just puts an official company stamp on a de facto situation. From 2010 through 2011, AMD released a new Catalyst driver every month like clock work. Starting last summer, however, AMD began having trouble with high-profile game releases that performed badly, were visually corrupted, or both. Rage was one high-profile example, but there have been launch-day... Read more...
