Intel’s Paul Otellini is on his way out as CEO, but before he steps down a month from now, he dropped some news about what Intel is planning to roll out in the near future during an earnings call with investors. Specifically, he said that soon, consumers might be seeing touch-enabled Intel-based notebooks running Windows 8 for as low as $200. Otellini had previously noted in his remarks that he believed OEMs might start rolling out new notebook form factors based around upcoming Haswell (4th-generation Core processors) or even the new Bay Trail Atom chips at price points as low as $300 to $400, and one person on the call pushed him on that number. It's been obvious for weeks that Intel's earnings call this afternoon wasn't going to have much good news in it. With total PC shipments falling 13% quarter-on-quarter -- the worst decline in nearly 20 years -- there was no way Intel would escape being hit by that drop. Today, Santa Clara reported that its Q1 profits fell 25%, to $2B, down from $2.7B in the first quarter of 2012. Gross margins took a hammering, as well, falling to 56.2% from 64% in Q1 2012. At the Intel Developers Forum currently underway in Beijing, Intel revealed a number of details regarding future Atom and Xeon processors and proposed server and rack-level enhancements to improve efficiency and ease upgrades moving forward. As Diane Bryant (senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter and Connected Systems Group) revealed, the company will soon refresh its Xeon and Atom processor lines with new products manufactured using Intel’s advanced 22nm process node, which offer improved performance per watt characteristics and expanded feature sets that target specific applications. As data requirements worldwide continue to skyrocket, HP is attempting to shoot past those demands with a new class of space-, energy-, and cost-efficient servers with HP Moonshot. Today, the first of that breed is commercially available. The solution consists of the HP Moonshot 1500 enclosure and HP ProLiant Moonshot services, which will be available from a number of HP partners and geared toward specific workloads, respectively. Last month, Dell issued a press release in which it claimed its Latitude 10 Enhanced Security tablet is "up to 17 times faster and 94 percent less expensive to deploy than iPads in large scale enterprise implementations." It's no secret that Intel is planning to get into the television and entertainment business in some way, but now it appears that the company is getting looser about introducing things pertaining to those goals. At the TV Connect 2013 event in London, Intel has launched a new reference design for Media Processors. The MSRD is both a hardware and software design kit for OEMs and system integrators that allow them to quickly develop Intel-based set-top boxes and media servers. Intel has pre-integrated components such as a media engine, broadcast stacks, virtualization, and motion control technology so that validation testing time is reduced and time-to-market is accelerated. Warren East, the current CEO of ARM Holdings, has announced that he'll step down from the CEO position as of July 1. His replacement, ARM's Simon Segars, is an engineer who worked on some of ARM's earlier processors before stepping up to become company president. East's decision to step down is a bit surprising; the ARM executive told Reuters that "After you've been doing it for 12 years you do get a bit tired... and think "Maybe that's a bit of a brake on the business and somebody else should have a go." Fitch, the debt rating agency, evidently wasn't pleased with what it heard during AMD's last conference call. The agency has cut AMD's debt rating from a B to a CCC-. That's the last step above default, and it echoes the agency's skepticism over whether or not AMD can continue as a going concern. The agency writes: The ratings reflect Fitch's expectations that negative free cash flow (FCF) in 2013 will drive cash below AMD's target level and potentially approach the company's minimum operating level. Beyond the near-term, Fitch believes a strong end market recovery and adoption of AMD's new products will be required to preserve cash during the company's multi-year transformation... One of the most active companies at CES in the announcements department is Intel, and it wasted no time in getting things kicked-off today. It's obvious that the company would love a much larger piece of the mobile pie, but to date, it's had a difficult time penetrating the North American market. However, it's been doing fairly well in other places - especially in emerging markets. So, it's of no surprise that the company is retaining a good focus there, and is doing so with its just-announced Atom Z2420 mobile processor, codenamed "Lexington". Intel has been promising it for months, and now the company has officially announced the Intel Atom S1200 SoC. The ultra low power chip is designed for the datacenter and provides a high-density solution designed to lower TCO and improve scalability. The 64-bit, dual-core (four total threads with Hyper-Threading technology) Atom S1200 underpins the third generation of Intel’s commercial microservers and feature a mere 6W TDP that allows a density of over 1,000 nodes per rack. There's a bit of quoted wisdom that's been making the rounds in tech news, recently. Up until now, I've ignored it, in the hopes that it would die out and go away. Instead, it seems to be showing up with greater frequency. It looks something like this: "Like Intel, AMD was caught flat-footed in recent years with the emergence and fast growth of mobile devices..." This is the sort of sound byte analysis that's often spread by analysts who really ought to know better. When you consider Intel's competitive position in the desktop and notebook PC markets, one simple word comes to mind, "dominance."  Conversely, when it comes to tablets and smartphones, the landscape couldn't be more different. Intel's chief competitor on the desktop and PC side of the equation is AMD and it's obvious Intel is killing it there.  Intel's nemesis in tablets and smartphones? AMD is launching its first tablet-optimized APU today, in a bid to challenge Intel's de facto dominance of the Windows 8 tablet market. Dubbed Hondo, the new Z-60 draws less power than any Brazos-based part AMD has launched before. Some of you may remember that AMD launched a tablet processor last year, but the Z-01 -- codenamed Desna -- was an ordinary Brazos core that binned well enough to run within a lower power envelope. It was more a proof-of-concept chip, meant to demonstrate that AMD could, and would, compete in the tablet market. Hondo, in contrast, is a new spin on the original Brazos design. Though we gave you a glimpse of it in our IDF 2012 coverage, Intel is officially unveiling their new Atom Z2760 dual-core SoC (System on Chip), code named Clover Trail.  The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads.  Clover Trail is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices.  Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture... Intel's four beat, three second jingle has become synonymous with the company's brand, despite the fact that it contains no spoken words or associated text. To date, Santa Clara has reserved the sequence for its desktop, laptop, and server products, but it's planning a major smartphone marketing campaign as well. Intel is only just now dipping a toe in the US market -- the company has launched several Medfield-based phones this year, but they were destined for markets in China, India, Russia, and the UK. Intel reportedly revealed during IDF this week that its upcoming Clover Trail Atom processor platform will shun Linux support. As Intel explains it, the company's dual-core Clover Trail part is designed for Windows 8 and "the chip cannot run Linux." Oh really? That's a bit of a curious statement. Clover Trail is, after all, a x86 part, so there's no reason that it can't support Linux, even if Intel has plenty of reason why it won't. Rather than some kind of technical limitation that Intel's brilliant minds back by nearly unlimited resources aren't able to figure out, it appears this is an arbitrary restriction as part of an odd power play by the world's largest semiconductor player.
