When it comes to all-in-one PCs, looks are as important as the tech. You can get by with a clunky system in your office, but AIOs are often in kitchens, living rooms, and other spots where visitors are going to see them. Maingear’s Solo series was pretty slick as AIOs go, but there’s no question that the redesign puts it on a new level aesthetically. Maingear announced the overhaul today and pointed to the Solo 21's clean looks, new tech, and upgradability as major draws. Where once the Solo had three feet, it now has a single, chrome stand that sports a cut-out of the Maingear logo. It supports VESA mounts, too, which is handy if you’re eyeballing it for the living room. The... Read more...

There's a transformation taking place in the PC market, and despite what the doomsayers might tell you, it has nothing to do with tablets, smartphones, tweener devices like the Galaxy Note, or increasingly media-centric game consoles. No, the transformation we're observing is one where people are trading in their towers and monitors for space-saving all-in-one (AIO) desktops. The AIO form factor isn't new by any means, but for a number of reasons, it's finally starting to gain momentum. And as they become more popular, companies like Dell have begun paying more attention to ways they can improve upon the design. To wit, Dell's new XPS One 27, reviewed here, introduces a spacious and vibrant 27-inch... Read more...

Smaller form factor 2.5-inch hard drives are finally getting their due in the desktop segment, and it's thanks to the rising popularity (and affordability) of all-in-one (AIO) systems. According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, worldwide shipments of 2.5-inch HDDs to all AIOs are forecast to reach about 1 million units in 2013, which doesn't sound like very much until you consider that shipments are expected to be "virtually zero" this year. "With a maximum capacity of 1 terabyte, 2.5-inch HDDs are proving very attractive to PC makers for use in their next-generation all-in-one designs," said Fang Zhang, analyst for storage systems at IHS. "Multiple all-in-one PCs have the potential to adopt... Read more...

Don't you just hate it when you're trying to update your Facebook status on your all-in-one (AIO) PC when suddenly it burst into flames? You've never had that happen, you say? And you don't know anyone else who has experienced that either? Fair enough, though Lenovo isn't taking any chances and has decided to voluntarily recall 160,000 ThinkCentre M70z and M90z AIO desktop PCs sold between May 2010 and January 2012. "Lenovo has determined that due to a failure of the power supply in the affected all-in-one PCs, the system can overheat posing a fire hazard. Lenovo has received two customer reports worldwide of fire that resulted in damage to the PC," Lenovo said. Faulty power supplies that shipped... Read more...
The TouchSmart 520-1070 is a fairly remarkable AIO equipped with high-end hardware and a robust selection of software, all of which comes wrapped in a 23-inch touchscreen display with a speaker bar blasting out Beats Audio. Any fears that HP's recent preoccupation with righting its ship would result in a degraded product line go right out the window when you run your finger down the 520's spec sheet, which includes an Intel Core i7 2600S processor clocked at 2.8GHz, 8GB of DDR3 system memory, a capacious 2TB hard drive, discrete graphics powered by AMD's Radeon HD 6450A GPU, and even a Blu-ray burner. Oh, and there's a TV tuner shoved inside too, for good measure... HP Touchsmart 520 All-in-One... Read more...
Considering how close HP came to selling off or severing its world leading PC division, it's products like the new TouchSmart 520-1070 all-in-one (AIO) that make us glad somebody switched out the company's water supply. Actually, it's HP's old CEO, Leo Apotheker, who was responsible for the OEM's temporary insanity, and not some tainted H2O, but that's a rant for another time and another place. What we're focusing on here is an AIO system that comes well spec'd and offers a surprising amount of performance in a form factor typically more focused on aesthetics and convenience than raw computing power. The TouchSmart 520-1070 is a fairly remarkable AIO equipped with high-end hardware and a robust... Read more...
If you walk into any Walmart and head over to the HDTV section, one of the brands that will jump out at you is Vizio, which has built a reputation for building and selling comparatively affordable TV sets. In a way, Vizio is to TVs what Rosewill is to PC parts -- value oriented. Perhaps bored with focusing almost entirely on HDTVs (Vizio also dabbles in related equipment, like home theater speakers and Blu-ray players, as well as tablet PCs), Vizio is reportedly taking its low-cost mojo over to the PC industry. In an interview with USA Today, Vizio's chief technology officer, Matt McRae, goes into a bit of detail about new PCs Vizio plans to unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas... Lost in the shuffle of Ultrabooks, tablet PCs, and everything else that dominated the headlines in 2011 is the all-in-one (AIO) PC market. We've seen several new AIO models emerge over the past 12 months or so, and who knows, maybe in another year or two these things will replace traditional desktop towers in the mainstream market. That would be good news for Apple, whose iMac systems lead the pack in terms of market share. According to figures provided by DisplaySearch, iMacs accounted for nearly a third -- 32.9 percent if you want to split hairs -- of AIO shipments in the third quarter, Bloomberg reports. Barely visible in Apple's rear-view mirror is Lenovo, which took up the No. 2 spot with... Read more...

The AIO PC form factor isn't new by any means, but it's only recently begun to make a broad market appearance across a number of manufacturers beyond Apple or HP, who were among the first to pioneer the form factor. Better touchscreen technology, combined with lower prices, has made AIO PCs both practical and affordable. The ET2410 from Asus attempts to be both of these things. It's an $850 system built around Intel's Sandy Bridge platform and packaged in an ultra-slim body that looks fashionable and takes up very little space, despite bringing a sizable 23.6-inch touchscreen to the AIO party...
