Yesterday, Qualcomm announced that its Centriq 2400 Series processors are now shipping to its customers, nearly a year after it began sampling the chips. Available in 40-, 46- and 48-core versions, the Qualcomm is positioning Centriq 2400 as a worthy competitor to Intel's Xeon processors in the data center server market. Today, Qualcomm officially announced that it has begun shipping its Centriq 2400 server processors to its OEM partners. This marks a big step for Qualcomm, which is no stranger to the mobile market with its Snapdragon processors, but is a lesser known quantity in the server market. Intel's Xeon processors have already seen a credible challenge in the form of AMD's Zen-based EPYC family, and Centriq promises to be a low-power, high-density alternative that can run with the big dogs in the cloud infrastructure market. There's no question that our connected devices are increasingly coming under attack, as we witnessed with the Mirai botnet that made the rounds late last year. Well, this is not good. Chunks of source code related to internal Windows builds that have not yet been released to the general public were leaked online. ARM has developed a new generation of mobile chips that will empower smartphones and tablets of tomorrow with machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities, along with claimed significant increases in power efficiency and performance. With all the attention surrounding Windows 10 S right now, it’s easy to forget that Microsoft has another variant of Windows 10 arriving later this year. In late 2016, Microsoft announced that it is working on a Windows 10 SKU that will run natively on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. Last week, Microsoft made a surprise mention that it had been working with Qualcomm to bring Windows Server to ARM, a tidbit that no doubt sent many into a frenzy. At Intel, we wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of anxiety was felt.  From a consumer or enterprise standpoint, Windows Server on ARM could sound like an interesting route to take. Well, as it happens, Microsoft didn't announce that Windows Server was going to become available for ARM. Qualcomm isn’t the only manufacturer looking to cut into Intel’s seemingly insurmountable lead in the server chip market. We’re also seeing a challenge from lesser known MACOM, which is employing an ARM chip design that promises high performance (particularly in regards to memory bandwidth) with incredible efficiency. As if AMD’s new Ryzen processors weren’t enough to make Intel grab for a bottle of antacids, it looks as though Microsoft’s latest partnership could challenge the world’s dominant processor manufacturer in the lucrative server market (Intel commands well in excess of 90 percent of the server chip market according to IDC). ARM and TSMC have become quite the duo over the years, combining the latter's cutting-edge process technologies with the former's processor IP. It is a partnership that has been working, hence why the two committed earlier this year to collaborating on a marketable 7nm FinFET chip.
