Toshiba OCZ RD400 Series High-Performance NVMe SSD Review

Toshiba OCZ RD400 - The Verdict

Performance Summary: The Toshiba OCZ RD 400 series of NVMe solid state drives performed very well throughout our entire battery of tests. With the particular access patters we used in IOMeter, the drives finished about in the middle of the pack versus some other high-end NVMe / M.2 SSDs. The same held true in the SANDRA File System benchmark. In all of the other tests, however, the Toshiba OCZ RD 400 series drives finished at or near the top of the charts. Bandwidth and access times in the HD Tune and CrystalDiskMark tests were especially strong, and the drives were among the best performers in the trace-based PCMark tests. Please note, however, we only had a 256GB Samsung SSD 950 Pro on hand for testing. The 512GB version of that drive offers better performance than the 256GB model.

Toshiba OCZ RD400 Series SSD - Find It At Amazon

We really like the Toshiba OCZ RD 400 series SSDs. Not only do these drives offer very strong performance, but they’re available in a wide variety of capacities in both M.2 “gumstick” and PCIe add-in card form factors. Pricing will also be competitive on these drives. The complete breakdown of models and prices is as follows...

RD400 128G with AIC $129.99 ($1per GB)
RD400 256G with AIC $189.99 ($0.74 per GB
RD400 512G with AIC $329.99 ($0.64 per GB
RD400 1T with AIC $759.99 ($0.76 per GB
RD400 128G $109.99 ($0.86 per GB
RD400 256G $169.99 ($0.66 per GB
RD400 512G $309.99 ($0.60 per GB
RD400 1T $739.99 ($0.74 per GB

At roughly $0.60 - $1 per gigabyte, suggested pricing on the Toshiba OCZ RD 400 series SSDs is in-line with the Samsung SSD 950 Pro, but markedly lower than the Intel SSD 750 series. Factor in the 5-year advanced warranty, strong performance, an excellent SSD Utility, and competitive pricing, and Toshiba OCZ has a strong product offering for mainstream, performance-minded consumers. If you’re in the market for a blazing fast SSD, the Toshiba OCZ RD400 should definitely be on your short list of considerations.
