Motorola Razr And Razr+ (2024) Review: Phenomenal Flip Phones

The battery setups in these phone are a little odd—the Razr has a 4200mAh battery, but the more expensive and power-hungry Razr+ is just 4000mAh. The devices have the same external dimensions, so it would seem there just wasn't as much space inside the Razr+ for a battery. Neither of these phones will run for multiple days on a charge, but we've found them both to be good enough for a single day. You might get into the red zone in the evening if you're using the main display a lot, but the external screen can help with that if you make good use of it.

Motorola Razr and Razr+ (2024) Battery and Charging

In our battery life rundown test, the Razr squeaked past the Razr+, although, neither one puts up an impressive number. These phones score around the same range as other recent foldable phones, about the same as Pixel phones from a couple of generations ago.

We appreciate that Motorola gave the Razr and Razr+ reasonably fast charging. With a cable, the phones max out at 45W. With a compatible wireless charger, you can get up to 15W of power. So, it's possible to top-up these phones with just a few minutes plugged in. That will make the single-day battery life less problematic if you end up using the device heavily.

Motorola Razr and Razr+ (2024) Review Conclusion: Fresh And Fun

The 2024 Razr and Razr+ are not Motorola's first foldable clamshells. Last year's Razrs were good, but the new models step thing up a few notches and are ready for prime time. This form factor has evolved slowly but surely over the past few years, and they are now almost as capable as non-folding phones in the same price range. The battery capacities are a bit low, and the hinge will always be a long-term durability concern, but these are good phones that also happen to fold in half.

It's good to see that Motorola is fully committed to the clamshell form factor. There's a lot of functionality for the external display, making it a snap to manage notifications, type messages, control music, and even play games. Motorola's hinge design does a good job of hiding the foldable display crease, too. While the action is a bit more stiff than Samsung's hinges, the Razr and Razr+ feel very solid and premium. You'd hardly know these phones fold in half when they're unfolded.

Motorola's camera performance has never been top-tier, and even new sensors can't totally save the Razrs. These phones can snap some great photos, but most images lose sharpness to Moto's processing, and low-light performance is iffy. The ability to take higher-quality selfies with the front screen doesn't entirely make up for the middling overall camera performance, but it helps. The bigger issue with these phones is that they only get three years of updates. Maybe that's enough for the majority of buyers, but there's no reason a smartphone couldn't last much longer—just ask Google and Samsung that both offer updates for up to 7 years.

Motorola Razr 2024 8

If you're interested in the foldable form factor, the lower priced 2024 Motorola Razr is a safe bet. At $700, it has a big external screen and is significantly more affordable than the $1,000 Razr+ and even more so compared to the $1,100 Galaxy Z Flip 6, though the Razr+ is currently discounted to $899 on Amazon. It's also competitive with non-folding phones in its price range. You might give up a few things, but you get a neat folding phone with a useful external display and great build quality. If it's flagship-level performance in a foldable form factor you crave, it's easy to justify the higher price of the Razr+.
