Future iPhones May Lock Automatically If A Thief Snatches Them
Apple has already built a solid foundation of anti-theft tools into iOS over the years. Find My, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection all work together to make a stolen iPhone difficult to use or resell. However, a meaningful gap remains. If a device is snatched while the screen is already unlocked, a thief has a window of opportunity to access financial apps, drain digital wallets, and compromise personal data before the display times out on its own. Apple introduced time-based delays on major Apple ID changes with Stolen Device Protection, but an unlocked screen still leaves plenty of room for damage.

According to recently uncovered code strings, Apple is actively working on a feature designed to close that gap. The system would detect the physical act of a phone being forcibly taken from a user's hand and lock the screen automatically in response, essentially removing the thief's head start. If this sounds familiar, it should. Google introduced a similar capability called Theft Detection Lock for Android back in 2024, and Apple appears to be building its own version.
There is no confirmed release date yet, but with WWDC 2026 kicking off on June 8, and iOS 27 expected to be the centerpiece of the keynote, we may not have long to wait for an official look. Stay tuned.
