HP webOS, as the mobile operating system is now officially known, was first born in the labs of a revitalized Palm, at a time when the company was angling to take on iOS and Android and offer the world's next great mobile OS. The first real glimpse at webOS came at CES 2009, with the introduction of the Palm Pre. Unfortunately, some would say Palm took too long to ship what ultimately turned out to be a subpar piece of hardware, and webOS fell to the wayside while Android leapfrogged iOS and Apple also continued to innovate. Then, amidst the turmoil, came more turmoil. HP's CEO was canned following a scandal, an unlikely successor was found, and Palm was sold to a company... Read more...
Virtually all of the system builders on the planet are looking to hop on board Intel's Sandy Bridge platform, but not all systems are created equal. Serving as a testament to the architecture's flexibility, some Sandy Bridge systems take aim at gamers, while other have multimedia chores in mind. Hewlett Packard's EliteBook 8560p can do a little a of both and is described as a "business performer." We see you rolling your eyes at the notion of an in-depth business notebook review, but hang with us, it will be worth the ride. HP emptied its entire bag of tricks on the EliteBook 8560p, the company's top-end business laptop that employs several features we wish other notebook vendors would adopt.... Read more...
At this point, there's no shame in saying it: the floodgates have opened up for AMD's Fusion. What began as a trickle -- as AMD finally introduced a shipping version of the long-awaited Fusion platform -- has turned into a steady stream, and we're definitely excited to see APUs, as AMD calls the product, finally making an impact. AMD had played up the idea of an Accelerated Processing Unit for years, and now, it's clearly a reality. Lenovo's ThinkPad X120e, which we reviewed a few months ago, instantly became one of our favorite ultraportables, and now HP has what appears to be a rival machine, of sorts. The Pavilion dm1z is an 11.6" machine, that is a touch larger than the myriad 10" netbooks... Read more...
Of the six smart phones on the market that run Microsoft's latest phone OS, Windows Phone 7, HTC designed and manufactures three of them. It's latest, and most expensive, is Sprint's first-and currently only-WP7 option, the HTC Arrive and it arrived at Sprint just last month. Meanwhile, prices on WP7 phones from AT&T and T-Mobile have recently been drastically reduced. (You don't have to pay more than $100 for the other HTC phones or the Dell Venue Pro, and can pick up a Samsung Focus or LG Quantum for as little as $49). Yet, Sprint still wants $199 for the HTC Arrive and that's with a two-year contract. That said, the HTC Arrive offers a combination of Microsoft's latest and easily most... Read more...
HTC was the first manufacturer to provide a 4G phone though a US carrier when it shipped the HTC EVO 4G from Sprint. At the end of last year, HTC promised it would once again be the first to 4G with another carrier. And days later, the company announced the Thunderbolt smartphone with Verizon Wireless.  It's been a few months since the announcement, and although there were many rumored release dates for the phone, it only recently became available for consumers to purchase. As the first 4G LTE device in the United States, the Thunderbolt is definitely a hot smartphone that many users can't wait to get their hands on. Not only does it boast of 4G speeds, but it also has a large 4.3-inch display,... Read more...
Sprint continuously brags about its flagship 4G Android phone the HTC Evo. It is a great piece of hardware, but it is also a relatively large device with a premium price tag. Enter the HTC Evo Shift, currently Sprint's least expensive Android 4G phone. The Shift runs Android 2.2, includes a slide-out keyboard and is noticeably smaller than the EVO and Sprint's other slide-out 3G/4G phone, the Samsung Epic (see specs below). The Shift is also priced at $150 (with a two-year contract and mail-in rebate) compared to $199 for the HTC Evo and the Samsung Epic. It is a responsive, well performing smartphone that we liked in many ways. But, in exchange for the slide-out keyboard and lower price, it... Read more...
Sprint's marketing campaigns over the past few months have focused on the fact that the carrier was the first to launch a 4G network in the U.S. Building on that, the company has focused on the various things you can do with a 4G connection that weren't possible (or at least weren't very usable) without a fourth generation high-speed mobile broadband connection. In keeping along with the "first" concept, Sprint announced the HTC EVO 4G—the world's first 3G/4G Android smartphone, would be available on their network.  Although the EVO 4G may no longer be the only 3G/4G handset around (it has since been joined in Sprint's lineup by the Samsung Epic), the EVO 4G is still only one of two... As the holiday season rapidly approaches, there’s one question that gets asked rather frequently: Have you been naughty or nice? Of course, we all know that a lot hinges on this seemingly simple question. If you’ve been nice, then perhaps Santa will bring you an awesome gift; that one piece of hardware you've been jonesing for. On the other hand, if you’ve been naughty and have cursed your computer (hey, who hasn’t?) or ignored your significant other because Left 4 Dead 2 or Modern Warfare 2 beckoned, then you’d better shape up before it's too late. Otherwise, the only thing you’ll have to look forward to is a lump of coal, or worse.  Believe us--we've... Read more...
Synopsis by HotHardware Editor, Jennifer Johnson:  Verizon Wireless and HTC have a hit on their hands with the Droid Incredible. It's not only a very good Android phone, it's also one of the better smartphones on the market today. Verizon Wireless customers have some really great phone options, and the Incredible deserves to be at the top of the list. Certainly there are, and will be, a lot of powerful new phones coming to market in the coming months, including the Motorola Droid X, but when it comes to current high-end smartphones, the Droid Incredible is now arguably the Android smartphone to beat. HTC Droid Incredible Smartphone Specifications & Features CPU Speed Qualcomm... Read more...
When the HTC Touch Pro2 initially became available, it was one of the best business-class smartphones on the market. Fast-forward to today, and we've seen quite a few new phones hit the market since the Touch Pro2 was released. Despite the availability of competing phones, however, the case could be made that the Touch Pro2 is still a worthy contender in the smartphone space. We'll be taking a closer look at the Sprint variant of the Touch Pro2 in this review, but keep in mind similarly equipped models are also available from Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and other carriers. The fact that this phone isn't exclusive to a single carrier is a nice benefit in terms of support and the availability of... Read more...
Splitting the difference. Satisfying the niche. Exploiting an opportunity. All of those phrases could be used to accurately describe what HP has done here with the new EliteBook 8440w. It's one of the smaller options in the expanding EliteBook family, yet also one of the most powerful. That's not a combination you hear of very often. In most circumstances, you'll need a larger machine in order to accommodate more powerful components within, mostly because the more powerful components emit more heat than the lower-end components. Hewlett-Packard, however, has managed to get a Core i7 Mobile processor within the frame of a 14" notebook and still keep the heat under control. What we're left... Read more...
The Android operating system has enjoyed a tremendous boom in popularity since the Motorola DROID was released. Since then, many additional Android-powered phones have come to market. One of the latest new Android phones is the Droid Incredible by HTC. The word "incredible" certainly invokes high expectations, so you can bet users will demand great things from this phone or there will be plenty of complaints. Given that the phone is made by HTC, a long-time and very popular player in the smartphone space, and the fact that the Incredible is hitched to Verizon Wireless' network, the phone certainly has a few things going for it. As the best of the Android-powered phones on Verizon Wireless, the... Read more...
HP's Mini range of netbooks have been well respected in the industry, and while they were never as instrumental as Asus in the explosion of the netbook as a whole, they've really managed to nail their niche. From the start, the HP Mini was one of the most fashionable netbook lines out there, boasting subtle curves, a uniform keyboard, gorgeous styling cues and a larger-than-average trackpad. By and large, the Mini lineup hasn't changed too much since its introduction, but that has mainly been the case because Windows XP was pretty much the only operating system available for it (Linux alternatives notwithstanding). Couple that with the limited Atom CPU lineup and the struggle to keep... Read more...
