Brandon received his first PC, an IBM Aptiva 310, in 1994 and hasn’t looked back since. He cut his teeth on computer building/repair working at a mom and pop computer shop as a plucky teen in the mid 90s and went on to join AnandTech as the Senior News Editor in 1999. Brandon would later help to form DailyTech where he served as Editor-in-Chief from 2008 until 2014. Brandon is a tech geek at heart, and family members always know where to turn when they need free tech support. When he isn’t writing about the tech hardware or studying up on the latest in mobile gadgets, you’ll find him browsing forums that cater to his long-running passion: automobiles.

We’ll gladly forgive you if you’ve completely forgotten about Amazon’s first foray into the smartphone market. The Fire Phone, which was first announced in June 2014 and went on sale as an AT&T exclusive, debuted with a shockingly high price tag of $199 for the 32GB model and $299 for the 64GB model on contract... Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services division has been a disaster of epic proportions. Microsoft brought over most of Nokia’s employees into the Microsoft fold, only to jettison many of them over the past year. The culmination of this Nokia culling occurred this morning with the... There’s a lot of positive energy flowing through Microsoft these days. The company by all accounts won E3 with the unveil of a new 1TB Xbox One console, a swanky new “Elite” wireless Xbox One controller, and backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games. And we can’t forget the July 29 release of Windows 10... Read more...
When Google first announced its Project Fi wireless service in late April, one of the headlining features allowed customers to receive refunds for unused data. For example, Google charges $10 per gigabyte of data that you add to your plan; so if you pay $60 for 6GB worth of data and only use 2GB during your billing... Read more...
Move over Raspberry Pi, there’s a new micro computer in town, and it’s geared [for now] primarily at British schoolchildren. We first brought you news about the Micro:bit in early March as a part of the BBC’s “Make it Digital” campaign. At the time the device was still in the prototype stage, but the device is now... If you’re a fan of Star Trek (and what true techie isn’t?), The Wand Company has just announced what could possibly be one of the greatest smartphone accessories that we’ve seen in quite some time. The company has built a true-to-life Communicator — yes, that Communicator which we saw Captain Kirk whip out on numerous... Read more...
As if AMD’s Q1 financial performance wasn’t bad enough, the company’s revised Q2 guidance is actually worse than expected. The company originally forecast a 3 percent sequential drop in quarterly revenue (the company added a +/- 3 percent margin or error indicating a 6 percent decline as worst case scenario), but now... In case you haven’t already read the Hot Hardware reviews, we’re big fans of Samsung’s 850 EVO and 850 PRO SSDs. The drives come backed with 5-year warranty (10-year for the PRO), offer excellent reliability, and are top-notch performers in synthetic and real world benchmarks. Not content with tackling the “internal”... Read more...
Windows 10 Mobile is destined to land sometime later this year (Microsoft hasn’t given us a definite date, only saying that it will land some time after Windows 10’s July 29th debut), and it can’t come soon enough. Microsoft’s smartphone market share has been stagnant in the sub-five percent range for quite some time... Read more...
Shenmue 3 is a game that was 14 years in the marking, and thanks to a record-setting Kickstarter campaign (the game raised $2 million in just 9 hours), we’ve seen that fans of the popular game series are still willing to show their support for creator Yu Suzuki. When the Kickstarter campaign was first initiated... Read more...

Bloatware, Bloatware, Bloatware! We all hate bloatware. And with the exception of a few companies like Apple, Motorola, and Google (with its Nexus devices) there aren’t many ways to avoid factory- or carrier-installed bloatware without rooting a device. One of the biggest offenders in years past has been Samsung, and... Read more...
Let’s be honest here, BlackBerry 10 isn’t exactly a vibrant, thriving operating system. BlackBerry has less than one percent smartphone market share and simply can’t compete these days with the flashy iOS flagship smartphones coming out of the woodwork from Apple and Android flagships from the likes of Samsung, HTC...
