Back in late July, NVIDIA updated its SHIELD TV 4K streaming box to SHIELD Experience Upgrade 8.0, which was based on Android 9 Pie. The update also brought some new features along with a few bugfixes. However, what many SHIELD TV owners weren’t expecting were issues with existing 4K video playback.  NVIDIA has now acknowledged that a handful of apps have suddenly stopped playing back content at 4K resolutions. In a post to the official NVIDIA support forums, a staffer wrote: We’re aware of a 4K playback issue impacting a small number of apps on SHIELD TV devices and are working on a solution. In most of these cases, users can cast these movies to SHIELD in 4K using built-in... Read more...
Movies Anywhere is a popular service that lets you buy your favorite flicks at one place and then watch them in any other participating location. Essentially that means you can buy a movie on iTunes or Vudu and then port that movie to any other service to watch wherever you happen to be and on whatever participating device is most convenient for you. One of the big tech firms that wasn't part of the Movies Anywhere realm was Microsoft, but as of this week that is changing. Microsoft is now a Movies Anywhere partner with support for Windows 10 and the Xbox now available. To get encourage users to link their Microsoft account to the Movies Anywhere app, you can get a free flick for a limited time... Read more...
Google faces immense competition in the streaming space, but even so, the company's Chromecast dongle has two things going for it. The first is price. At just $35 -- and sometimes cheaper if there's a promotion or sale taking place -- Chromecast is one of the most affordable ways to upgrade your home or dorm room entertainment scheme with streaming content. And secondly, Chromecast continues to get better as more developers jump on board. One of the newest members to the Chromecast family is VUDU, the on-demand video service owned by Walmart. Using the VUDU app on Chromecast, movie buffs can control video playback, volume, and closed captions just like a remote control. You can even mutli-task... Read more...
Amid growing fears of security threats to online services, one that is often overlooked is flat-out burglary, which is the old-fashioned way of getting hacked. Movie streaming service Vudu revealed that its offices were burglarized on March 24th, and thieves made off with hard drives, among other things. According to an FAQ that Vudu posted on its site, the hard drives indeed contained customer data, “including names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, account activity, dates of birth and the last four digits of some credit card numbers.” The drives also contained passwords; although they’re encrypted, Vudu has gone ahead and reset all users passwords. That’s... Read more...
Earlier this month we covered Walmart's burgeoning partnership with the Ultraviolet DRM system backed by major Hollywood studios and their plans to "assist" customers in registering DVDs with the Ultraviolet system. Walmart has since announced additional details to the program and it's a clever attempt to drive more users to Vudu, Walmart's subsidiary movie streaming service. Here's how the service works. "Starting April 16th, 2012 in more than 3,500 stores, Walmart customers will be able to bring their DVD and Blu-ray collections to Walmart and receive digital access to their favorite titles from the partnering studios. An equal conversion for standard DVDs and Blu-ray discs will be $2. Standard... Read more...
If there's one thing that's abundantly clear, it's this: streaming media isn't going the way of the dodo anytime soon. Western Digital has just added thousands of new HD movies for WD TV customers, not to mention a remote control app for Apple and Android mobile devices. In other words, your WD TV remote just got shelves. The company's also adding VUDU, as well as several additional new sports and entertainment services to the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub media players, adding to the media player family's current content offerings from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster, CinemaNow, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook and many others. In addition to VUDU, new services include SnagFilms, XOS College... Read more...
The Walmart-owned VUDU movie rental service is making big strides in the home entertainment realm, as they've just launched on Xbox 360. That's a super major platform to launch on, no doubt. Xbox LIVE customers can now shop VUDU's library using new, interactive features such as voice search, voice control and Kinect gesture commands to rent or own the latest Hollywood hits, TV shows, cinema classics and independent gems in standard or high definition. To encourage customers to try VUDU on Xbox, VUDU is offering a $4.99 credit toward their first rental or purchase. Also, through today only (11:30 p.m. PST) at Walmart.com, customers can get free shipping to home on Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles,... Read more...
VUDU has remained one of the only movie streaming services that deliver true 1080p material. The vast majority of them peak at 720p, but VUDU XL is 1080p. And proud of it. But even VUDU knows that the web is the future, and if you aren't streaming through a browser, you're missing out on a major chunk of the market. The company has this week revealed their latest trick, in-browser movie streaming, but there's a long way to go before those VUDU XL videos come to Firefox. For now, all browser streaming is capped at an SD resolution, and that's likely due to the browser technologies currently available and VUDU's desire to ensure a good experience even on PCs that aren't exactly "modern." From what... Read more...
The Boxee Box is still missing one major piece: Netflix. But that's better than missing two major pieces. Most of the streaming set-top box competition provides access to both Netflix and Vudu, and the latest Boxee Box firmwaer now provides access to the latter. Vudu is yet another movie rental service, but it differs from most by offering higher quality streams. Up to 1080p, in fact. If you've been enjoying your Boxee Box, but have been hoping for a bit more content, the newest update is sure to please. If you've been really on top of these updates, you'll notice that Boxee actually pushed out and then pulled back an update last week. The company took some time to iron out a few issues, and... It's a new year, and that means new things for the Boxee Box. Boxee Box owners have been wishing and waiting for Netflix support ever since it went on sale in November of last year, and now the team is providing an official update. Unfortunately, neither Netflix nor VUDU apps were available for the holidays. But there was plenty of other things to keep you occupied, we're sure. But now, Avner Ronen has promised that VUDU will be arriving at some point during the week, and Netflix will be arriving at some point during the month. Boxee is definitely dead-set on providing both of these to users. They clearly see them as crucial to the success of the Boxee Box, and now users are being told that Boxee... Read more...
Netflix may be the dominant provider of streaming content these days, with Hulu close behind in terms of mind share. But when it comes strictly to movie rentals (streaming ones, anyway), VUDU has been in the business as long as anyone. The company started out by providing their own hardware boxes, but quickly diverted from that market and instead provides software alone now for integration in Blu-ray players, televisions, etc. Now, VUDU's movie rental services will be coming to Panasonic's 2010 line of VIERA CAST-enabled Blu-ray players. After a firmware update on November 24, the players will be able to access VUDU's library of 4,000 HD movies (and growing), which can be streamed in 1080p. Most... Read more...
Sony always said that the PlayStation 3 did games, movies, Blu-ray, streaming, online matchups, and well, everything else. And now that's coming true. Sony's PS3 has grown into a multi-media powerhouse over the past year, gaining Netflix support (and then removing the need for a disc to be inserted), gaining Hulu Plus support and now, gaining VUDU HD support. That's more streaming media than the average working man / woman has time to even enjoy, but the more the merrier, right? Sony's bringing VUDU's HD movie streams to the PS3, along with 5.1 surround sound, and the VUDU seen here will bring movies in 1080p glory. It's expected to launch on Nov. 23, bringing 4000 movies to the table, all of... Read more...
VUDU. Does that name ring a bell? If you have been paying attention to the media streaming world the past few years, it might. The company began by offering a set-top box solution, much like Roku has recently. The box was only for movie rentals and purchases, though, so no other outside streaming from places like Hulu. Since it was so limited in scope, few people actually went out of their way to get a box. Early on, VUDU realized that licensing their software out made more sense. This would enable existing set-top boxes to actually add functionality, and even select connected televisions. This week, VUDU announced that their movie rental service would also be joining Boxee for Windows, Mac and... Read more...
VUDU has been around for years. They were actually one of the first movie-streaming companies to emerge in the last decade, but they never seemed to gather a huge amount of support. Netflix already had a ton of buzz surrounding them, so when they decided to add a streaming option to complement the by-mail service, many flocked to it. Amazon's Video on Demand has also found a small group of supporters, but regardless of the different boxes and technology deployments, VUDU never seemed to get the respect it was due.At least it never got the public respect it was due. Behind closed doors, VUDU has been receiving a great deal of respect and attention, and from the world's largest retailer: Walmart.... Read more...
Vudu has certainly come a long way during its brief existence in the world of home entertainment. Starting out as a company peddling standalone movie boxes, the outfit has morphed into a software solutions provider that puts its iconic software and UI onto devices that people are already looking to buy. No extra mess, same great content.Shortly after announcing that its movie rental services would be coming to LG HDTVs and Mitsubishi HDTVs, Vudu has now made the move into the realm of Blu-ray. Starting later this month, a free software update will enable LG's NetCast-capable BD390 Blu-ray Disc player to access Vudu's library of films. From there, users will see the same UI present on Vudu's own... Read more...
There was a time not too long ago where just about every TV maker was jumping to add Netflix streaming to their sets. Now that said wave has rolled, it looks like the next bandwagon to jump on is the one with the Vudu banner streaming from the rear. Shortly after LG announced that a select few of its Netcast HDTVs would be able to stream on-demand films from Vudu, Mitsubishi has stepped forward with similar news. Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America has today announced that it has begun shipments of its Vudu-ready HDTVs. The 1080p flat-panel sets are all in the Unisen Diamond lineup, with the Ethernet-equipped LT-46249 ($2600) and LT-52249 ($3100) being called out in particular. Both sets also... Read more...
While it's not quite a household yet just yet, Vudu is definitely well-known and respected in the media streaming sector. The company broke through a few years back with its dedicated Vudu movie streaming device, and by and large, it has stuck to its guns so far. Today, however, it's showing a new side of itself, along with an all new Vudu user interface and a partnership that'll definitely have you considering an LG as your next HDTV.In what amounts to the company's first significant non-set top box initiative, Vudu has announced a deal that will bring its movie streaming service to LG HDTVs, even to existing ones. For those unfamiliar with the service, Vudu is a rather elegant streaming service... Read more...
It's happening everywhere, really. Movie set-top boxes around the world are growing functionality at an alarming rate. Boxee has arrived on the Apple TV. Amazon Video on Demand is on Roku. And now, Pandora -- the world's most loved internet radio source, unscientifically speaking -- is on Vudu.Aside from boasting one of the largest high definition VOD lineups in the industry, Vudu can now provide its users with the smooth streaming sounds of Pandora -- and for free, of course. The music application is the first of its kind on Vudu's Rich Internet Application platform, and it's joining YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and a selection of over 120 channels of web based video content available to Vudu owners.... Vudu, a movie and TV show download service provider, has just given us yet another reason why we never need to leave the house. Vudu announced today that it is making high-definition (HD) downloaded titles available for purchase. A number of online movie and TV show sources, such as Apple, Amazon, CinemaNow, as well as Vudu, currently offer HD movie and TV show downloads as rentals, but this marks the first time that HD downloaded titles will be available for purchase.  Some of Vudu's current, popular HD rental titles.(Credit: Vudu) Vudu is a video on-demand (VoD) service that streams a selection of over 10,000 movies over a broadband Internet connection to a Vudu device connected to a TV.... Vudu, a Video On Demand (VOD) service with a claimed over 1,100 HD titles available, supposedly leads Apple TV, Netflix, and Xbox Live for the broadest selection of HD movie content.  We just like the looks of their player on its own but there's more to like here.As a Vudu user you have the option of viewing your selections streamed to their Vudu Box ($299.00) available for purchase online and at Best Buy, or the high end Vudu XL ($999.00), available through authorized installers. A stream to computer option is not available. Movie rentals cost from $0.99 to to $3.99, and select movies may be purchased from $4.99 to $19.99 "Indeed, a quick examination of competing services seems to bear... Read more...
Vudu might be on to something with its new promotion: "Stay in. Rent four movies for the price of 1 gallon gas!" At today's prices for movie tickets, concession snacks, and the cost of gas for getting to and from the theater, a family of four could easily spend upwards of a $100 for a night out at the movies. Staying at home and watching movie rentals means you'll miss out on the latest releases, but a quick gander at Vudu's catalog shows that its rental offerings include many A-list titles, including some films that were recently in the theaters.
