Gaming is climbing to new heights thanks to emerging virtual reality technology, and a virtual reality treadmill is now up for preorder. The Virtuix Omni’s Kickstarter campaign has ended, and Virtuix achieved its goal of over $1.1 million (via 3,000 backers). For $499, you can order an Omni National Motion Interface treadmill (not counting shipping) that comes with a pair of special shoes, a belt, and the necessary hardware and software for tracking. If the whole family wants in on the action, $1,019 gets you the Omni Duel Package that includes two treadmills with all the aforementioned extras (but three pairs of shoes instead of one). When Aaron Rasmussen, founder of Protagonist LLC and maker of the Atlas real-space virtual reality machine, says that this is “year zero of virtual reality”, he has a point. Between the fundraising success of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset (as well as support from developers and the likes of Valve) and intriguing related projects such as the Omni multidirectional VR treadmill, it’s been a groundbreaking time for the evolution of gaming. Rasmussen’s company is seeking funds on Kickstarter for a virtual reality product called Atlas that maps and “paints” your real-world environment to create a virtual world (or battlefield, as it were)--not unlike the... Earlier this spring, Valve’s Joe Ludwig announced that the company’s Team Fortress 2 would support the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Now, Valve is expanding that support to Half Life 2, as well. In a post on the Oculus Rift developer forums, Ludwig said that Valve “just shipped” a beta for Half-Life 2 that includes Oculus Rift support, and he added some simple instructions on how to get it. He noted that it wasn’t perfect yet by saying, “This port is a bit more raw than TF2 was when it shipped, so we would appreciate hearing about any bugs you find.” Half-Life 2 (Image credit: Polygon) Indeed, from his instructions and updates, it would seem that... The concept of gaming accessories has been taken to a whole new level. We’ve covered the Oculus Rift before, and the virtual reality headset looks like an exciting evolution in the world of gaming, but other enterprising souls are looking to add VR to the lower portions of the body, as well. A company called Virtuix is developing the Omni, which is essentially a multidirectional treadmill that its creators call “a natural motion interface for virtual reality applications”. The company posted a video showing someone playing Team Fortress 2 and using the Omni along with the Oculus Rift. You can see in the video how much running and movement this fellow does. With something like... Read more...
It’s been a busy week for Unreal Engine 3; and now, Oculus announced that it has partnered with Epic Games to release a special Unreal Development Kit (UDK) that’s ready for the Oculus Rift. It’s coming for free to all developers along with Oculus integration. “With the Oculus-ready version of the UDK, you’ll be able to start building incredible VR experiences with the Unreal Engine toolset the moment you receive your Rift development kit (or even right now, if you’re so inclined),” said Oculus founder Palmer Luckey in a blog post. Hawken demo with Oculus Rift The UDK will be available from the Oculus Development Center in April, and it will include some... Read more...
