Amazon was unable to live up to analysts’ expectations when it was revealed in its report, for the third quarter of 2014, that there was a net loss of $437 million. Now, it appears that the online retailer is not living up to its workers’ expectations in Germany who could be going on strike. The labor union Verdi has asked that Amazon workers go on strike at five locations, in Germany, over the issue of pay and conditions. The union asked workers in Bad Hersfield, Leipzig, Graben, and Rheinberg to go on strike Monday through Wednesday while workers at Werne are to go on strike Monday and Tuesday. Verdi argues that Amazon is not paying its 9,000 German employees, who should be considered... Read more...
Bah, humbug. Just as the holidays approach, Amazon.com has an issue on its hands over in Germany. The company, which prides itself on tremendously quick turnarounds and lightning-fast shipping, is now dealing with hundreds of employees who began striking on Monday. The strike was no doubt timed to coincide with the annual holiday rush of orders, as consumers flock to the site and attempt to snap up gifts for those that they haven't addressed yet. The issue at hand? Pay and conditions, as these usually go. For Amazon, Germany is a region worth paying attention to. It's actually the company's second-largest market behind its homeland (U.S.), with sales growing over 20% there in 2012 to nearly $9... Read more...
We've come to the conclusion that an alien species has contaminated the Earth's water sources with a chemical that leads to an inability to negotiate, thereby leading to a series of labor disputes. Don't believe it? Just look at the evidence. The NFL season was in jeopardy while owners and players disputed a new collective bargaining agreement, and after reportedly switching to Gatorade (reported by us, based on nothing), finally hammered out a new deal. NBA players and owners, meanwhile, both seem content to wipe out the upcoming basketball season rather than agree to terms on how to best split billions of dollars. Want more proof? Look at the telco world, where 45,000 Verizon workers have gone... Read more...
Since RealNetworks announced RealDVD (available today, if you are interested), it was obviously there would probably be some kind of legal action.  After all, the product rips DVDs to your hard drive, though it purports to not just maintain the original DRM but in fact adds another layer of protection. Still, most would probably have expected the lawsuit to come from the other direction.Shortly after releasing the RealDVD product today (about an hour or so!) RealNetworks announced a lawsuit against a host of companies: the DVD Copy Control Association, Inc., Disney Enterprises, Inc., Paramount Pictures Corp., Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., NBC Universal,... France and the UK have already begun considering such "three strikes" downloading laws, but with France taking over the EU presidency on 7/1, there is talk - and a vote upcoming - on a E.U. version. Now Sarkozy, who took over the European presidency this week, is trying to stretch the measure across Europe through amendments (pdf) to the Telecoms Package, a review of European telecoms law currently in the European Parliament.Critics fear that through this legislation European ISPs could also be mandated to block legitimate traffic in an effort to 'prevent' illegitimate traffic slipping by. Some amendments will transform the ISPs from technical intermediaries into law enforcers.Action groups Netzpolitik.org,... Read more...

When ASUS unveiled their Republic of Gamers (ROG) series of products, they stated their mission clearly: "deliver the most innovative and best performing PC solutions to enhance the usage experience for power users".  There's a lot in that statement to live up to, but ASUS was confident in their abilities.  Over the years that we have covered many of their products, and we've seen a fair share of hardware that performed at or exceeded our expectations.  Thus, when NVIDIA upped the core-logic ante last year with the introduction of the 780i chipset, one of the first boards we checked out was the ASUS P5N-T, which can be viewed here.   Although the P5N-T didn't... This might not be a bad idea considering the real-life murder related to Lineage II we wrote about earlier, but still ...The South American nation famous for its ability to create great soccer players, attractive swimsuit models and land that used to be rainforests has brought the banhammer down upon two of the world's most popular online games. Both Counter-Strike and EverQuest, each now nine-years old, were said to promote "the subversion of public order, were an attack against the democratic state and the law and against public security" by the judge enacting the ban. Here's a question: why these two?  Did Sony and Valve not grease the wheels enough?  After all there are still plenty... The Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA) has struck out at pirates yet again, and we're not talking about the Jack Sparrow variety of pirates here.  We're talking about the kind that put expensive movies on the 'net for all to view for no price.Perhaps the most interesting piece of news in this story is that the MPAA not only filed suit against a site here in the states, but also one on the other side of the world:“The domain search also indicated cinematube.net's servers are located in Malaysia. The site averages more than 24,000 unique users each day who view more than 85,000 pages of content.Servers for ssupload.com are located in Arizona and average 55,000 unique daily visitors who... The freebies will be a set of season premieres, and will only be for the next two weeks. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Fox and Apple have reached an agreement to offer free downloads of the shows Fox is trying to promote this sweeps season: that is, the ones people aren't watching as much as they'd like. No Simpsons or Family Guy clips are among the five shows currently available for free on the iTunes Store. But episodes of shows sure to be forgotten in the sands of time, like Back To You, Til' Death and K-Ville, are currently available for free at the iTunes Store.Interesting... Read more...
