Blockchain technology is beginning to take off, as we saw with the 10-second video that sold for $6.6 million at auction. Simultaneously, trading cards have also taken off in certain markets, but it can be difficult to find cards and packs. Combining both ideas, Ubisoft has partnered with the Belgian Pro League to develop the One Shot League, a blockchain-based fantasy football game. One Shot League will be a free-to-play game “in which players form a 5-player team from a previously selected deck of cards of Jupiler Pro League football players.” Each match day, a new team is selected, hence the “One Shot” name. Besides just playing the football games (soccer in the US),... Read more...
It looks as though Facebook is doing everything in its power to persuade people to move on over to its Messenger platform. The latest trick up Facebook Messenger’s sleeve is a hidden football (soccer) game. The launch of the game neatly coincides with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2016 competition and the centennial anniversary of the Copa America tournament. Unlike the basketball mini-game that was launched in March, which required you to swipe the screen to get the ball in the hoop, the football mini-game requires you to repeatedly tap the football on the screen to keep it in the air. The more you tap the football (without letting it fall back to earth), the higher... Read more...
Soccer might not be the most popular sport in the U.S., but it's certainly growing on Americans. Of course, soccer enjoys an enormous global audience, and if anyone needs reminding of that, just check out the World Cup activity on Facebook. At only halfway through the tournament, there are more than 1 billion related posts, likes, and comments on the world's most popular social playground. That makes this year's World Cup -- a tournament that's held every four years -- the most active topic ever on Facebook, according to data obtained by Reuters. Mighty impressive, especially since there are two more weeks of World Cup action, giving the tournament ample time to set new records. Image Source:... Read more...
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has given its stamp of approval for a system based on the Select iBall, the world's first intelligent soccer ball that detects when it crosses the goal line and then communicates that information to scorekeepers and referees. FIFA has been testing the iBall for the past few months and approved one final test that could one day end up being used in professional soccer games. If you were to tear open Select's iBall, you'd find a web of copper wires, which uses induction to communicate with a panel of antennas mounted to the goal frame. As soon as the soccer ball crosses over, it sends a signal to the referee's wristwatch... Read more...
Up until now, 3D has been mostly a joke. It required unsightly glasses, it was only available in a few places, and most 3D content was hardly entertaining. Today, however, 3D is experiencing a revolution. Movie producers are backing it, cinemas are spending money to support it, and even TV makers are marketing it. Only time will tell if consumers will buy in, but one thing is for sure: it'll be hard to ignore the World Cup in 3D. The World Cup is arguably the biggest sporting spectacle in the world next to The Olympics, with it involving many countries and being a competition for national pride across the globe. The event, which will be hosted in South Africa, will be shown the world over in... Read more...
