Two large communications satellites, one American and one Russian, collided in space 490 miles over Siberia, NASA reported Wednesday. The collision involved an Iridium commercial satellite, launched in 1997, and a Russian satellite, Cosmos 2251, which was launched in 1993 and believed to be non-functioning.The Iridium satellite weighed 1,234 pounds, and the Russian craft weighed 1,984 pounds. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Les Kodlick of the U.S. Strategic Command said: "We believe it's the first time that two satellites have collided in orbit."Previous collisions have apparently involved pieces and parts. Meanwhile, Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist at Johnson Space Center in Houston, said:... Read more...
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and Google-sponsored GeoEye-1 satellite, which was launched on September 6, has begun capturing image data from its orbit 423 miles above Earth. The satellite had been undergoing calibration and check out since launch, but transmitted its first, full color half-meter ground resolution images yesterday.Although the first images released from the Satellite are half-meter ground resolution, GeoEye-1 is actually capable of capturing much more precise images. Due to U.S. licensing restrictions, commercial customers--like Google--can only be given access to imagery that has been processed to half-meter ground resolution. But the GeoEye-1 satellite actually... Read more...
Long gone are the days when the primary differentiating factors between competing laptops models were just battery life and weight.  Don't be mistaken--battery life and weight are still important; but with so many folks now using a laptop as their only computer, laptop manufacturers have stepped up their efforts on the very look of their notebook designs, as well as piling on enough features to make you never miss a desktop PC.  Apple, of course, leads the charge with the sleek designs and user-friendly interface of its MacBook line of laptops.  Dell and Lenovo have also had success with their updated designs. Recently, long-time computer manufacturer, Toshiba, has done a complete... Read more...

Toshiba Satellite laptops with Toshiba's "Fusion finish" (the Satellite U400, M300, A300, and P300 models) will all come standard with "Toshiba Face Recognition" software. Instead of logging in with a traditional typed password, Satellite users can get access to their systems by having their faces scanned by the Satellite's integrated webcam and then compared against a database of stored images of the users' faces. A press release from Toshiba stated:“Toshiba prides itself on making laptops that stand out in the marketplace,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information... Google Earth is already "sharp" enough.  So sharp that insurgents in Iraq have used it to pinpoint troop positions, and so sharp that some countries want Google to restrict the images that it publishes of their land.  A new satellite will be launched Tuesday that will produce even sharper images.DigitalGlobe, provider of imagery for Google Inc's (GOOG.O) interactive mapping program Google Earth, said a new high-resolution satellite will boost the accuracy of its satellite images and flesh out its archive.
